IT S WHO WE ARE. IT S WHAT WE BELIEVE. The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team is a creed that represents Indiana University Athletics core values, mission statement and strategic plan all rolled into one solid commitment to our: Selves (especially our student-athletes) President and trustees Faculty and staff Alumni and benefactors Fans Fellow citizens (as a public university, we represent and belong to all Hoosiers) Where did this creed come from? The Spirit of Indiana was Indiana University s theme for 1925, the same year the original Memorial Stadium opened. As part of the festivities, the Indiana Creed of Sportsmanship was written by John S. Hastings, LL.B 24, a former Indiana University trustee. A tribute to team over self, the Creed states, in part: The spirit of Indiana in athletics must be the spirit of the team. The team must be competitive in spirit and have the will to win over and above the will to star Without this spirit of the team and this goal of school above self, we fail miserably not only here in our sports life, but in the world of business and society after we leave this campus With it, we exemplify the true spirit of Indiana in athletics. More recently, the motto of 24 Sports, One Team has been embraced by all of us at IU Athletics. It s our way of saying that we best pursue our individual goals by working together for the greater good. The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team is a statement of who Indiana University Athletics is in the great IU tradition of The Indiana Creed of Sportsmanship and the The Spirit of Indiana. It s our touchstone. It s our standard for setting priorities, allocating resources and making decisions. It s who we are and who we become. AND IT LIVES IN THE HEARTS OF OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES.

We are able people of integrity who play by the rules. We reach our highest academic potential and earn Indiana University degrees. We reach our highest athletic potential and win championships. We are unselfish leaders and teammates. We represent Indiana University with passion, appreciation, respect and distinction. We are positive, responsible, inclusive and integrated with our University. We are a part of something bigger than ourselves.
THIS IS OUR ROAD MAP. THIS IS OUR COVENANT. The principles of The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team are powerful and important. Still, it is essential that they be supported by deliberate efforts to ensure we meet their promise. What follows is our guide to meeting the promise of The Spirit of Indiana.
WE ARE ABLE PEOPLE OF INTEGRITY WHO PLAY BY THE RULES. No compromise. We re skilled people who do our jobs well, with honesty and a dedication to knowing and obeying the rules. We re committed to this unwavering, bedrock requirement. Period. Compliance. We comply with the letter and spirit of all NCAA, Big Ten Conference and other applicable rules, regulations and laws. Doing so is our number one priority. Fiscal responsibility and fund-raising. We operate our department in a fiscally responsible way. Our budgets are balanced. And our programs are built on a solid foundation of financial sustainability. Part of fiscal responsibility is effective fund-raising. That s why we have a sound, comprehensive development program designed to meet our goals for student-athlete scholarships, endowments and capital projects made possible through private support from our generous donors. Gender equity. We not only follow, we also embrace, Title IX as the law of the land and sound public policy. We are committed to gender equity for all of our sports and throughout our department.
IT S A TRIBUTE TO TEAM AND SCHOOL OVER SELF.
WE REACH OUR HIGHEST ACADEMIC POTENTIAL AND EARN INDIANA UNIVERSITY DEGREES. A world-class university with a place for every student. Indiana University is one of the country s premier public universities on one of the country s most beautiful college campuses. We offer more than 520 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, with 180 majors through 13 schools together offering more than 4,000 courses each semester. Many of our programs are rated in the nation s top 20. IU is also perennially ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of America s best public universities. A legacy of academic leadership. Indiana University has always been an innovator and leader in academic and life-skills development for our student-athletes. In fact, Buzz Kurpius, the nation s first female assistant head football coach, established one of the first academic support programs for student-athletes in the country here at Indiana University. Committed to individualized support for all. Our academic and student development services are there to help every student-athlete, regardless of background or academic ability. We offer constant support to each student-athlete giving the personalized attention needed to reach his or her full academic and personal potential. Our support services include: Advising Tutoring Mentoring Supervised study Learning assessments Life-skills development Center for Academic and Student Engagement. The new center, which opened in 2010, embodies our commitment to academic excellence. Located in the heart of IU s athletic campus, this 25,800-square-foot center for student-athletes includes: A state-of-the-art computer lab Collaborative study areas Quiet study rooms Three classrooms Private tutor rooms Staff offices Much more than that, however, our new center also provides an intellectual and social community that contributes to the holistic development of student-athletes and stimulates camaraderie among every student throughout our 24 sports. Accountability and integrity. We measure and manage academic achievement by student-athlete, program and our department as a whole. To ensure integrity, our department s academic support programs are evaluated independently by the University. Partnerships. We want our student-athletes to achieve intellectual greatness. To make this a reality, we use every possible resource that our University has to offer actively developing and fostering partnerships with professors, people and campus committees.
WE REACH OUR HIGHEST ATHLETIC POTENTIAL AND WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. A rich tradition of athletic success. Winning is in our DNA. And the pursuit of excellence is in the blood of each and every Hoosier student-athlete. It s these truths that have given us an impressive tradition of competitive success and accolades including among the most team and individual national championships, All-Americans and Olympians in the country. Coaching. Our beloved former President Herman B Wells understood that faculty would make Indiana University a world-class institution of higher education. Similarly, we understand that coaches make Indiana University a national leader in intercollegiate athletics. That s why we actively recruit, retain and support the best coaches for all of our 24 sports. Athletic performance resources. Our Excellence Academy provides every IU student-athlete with the resources necessary to reach his or her absolute highest athletic potential. The Excellence Academy integrates: Innovative strength and conditioning programming Advanced sports medicine and athletic training services An expert sports psychology staff A full-time certified sports nutritionist Each student-athlete is provided with a comprehensive, personalized and effective approach to athletic performance improvement, health, safety and wellness. Through partnerships with the IU Department of Kinesiology, the academy also integrates biomechanics and motor learning to provide individual assessments and improvement plans for our student-athletes and coaches. Facilities. Competitive facilities are vital to any successful collegiate athletic program. We at Indiana University Athletics are committed to developing and providing facilities that honor our traditions and enable our student-athletes to train and compete at the highest echelon. Fan support. A critical component of IU s athletic success, fans keep our teams energized and help us generate revenue for IU. That s why we engage in vigorous, innovative marketing for all of our programs. Student-athlete well-being. In order to compete at their best, student-athletes need to be physically and mentally strong. Our programs are supported in this regard by our world-class sports medicine and athletic training staffs, sports psychologists and certified sports nutritionist as well as the academic and life-skills support staff. Student-athletes also have the opportunity to express their voice within our department through, among other things, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

WE ARE UNSELFISH LEADERS AND TEAMMATES. IU Athletics Excellence Academy. Developing student-athletes and staff who are unselfish leaders and teammates is, and must continue to be, an integral part of everything we do. Unique to IU Athletics is our Excellence Academy. The academy takes an intentional approach, based on continual assessment, to identifying curricular and co-curricular life-skills and leadership opportunities for each student-athlete that integrate with his or her athletic experiences.

WE REPRESENT INDIANA UNIVERSITY WITH PASSION, APPRECIATION, RESPECT AND DISTINCTION. Represent. Because the student-athletes, coaches and staff of IU Athletics always represent Indiana University, it s imperative that we do so positively. We work to instill these characteristics through every option available to us, including our 24 sports programs and the Excellence Academy. Passion. We have an unbridled enthusiasm for our university, our sports, our performance and our goals. We proudly share this enthusiasm and nurture it in everyone around us. Appreciation. We have pride in Indiana University s history, traditions and accomplishments. We are grateful for the opportunities it has given us at no or reduced cost for many, thanks to the generous donors who fund our scholarship programs. This appreciation calls us to give back to Indiana University with our time, talent and treasure. Respect. In our words and through our actions, we respect our University, our student-athletes, our coaches, our staff, our fans and ourselves. Similarly, we always demonstrate good sportsmanship to our officials, competitors and fans. Distinction. It is an honor and a privilege to represent Indiana University, and we do so true to The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team, which distinguishes us from all other schools. We believe in ourselves and our ability. We know that a belief that we can get the job done is an essential component of getting the job done. We re confident and assured because Indiana University prepares us to be successful. We represent Indiana University understanding our obligation to do things with The Spirit of Indiana.
IT S A PLEDGE WE MAKE TO OURSELVES AND TO IU.
WE ARE POSITIVE, RESPONSIBLE, INCLUSIVE AND INTEGRATED WITH OUR UNIVERSITY. Positive. We have a positive mindset and focus on our strengths. We address our challenges but are not consumed by them. Responsible. We re answerable for what we do and what we fail to do. No one else. No excuses. Being responsible requires us to be accountable, reliable, self-sufficient, self-reliant, disciplined and independent. Inclusive. Absolutely believing that differences make us stronger, we appreciate being a collective of people from diverse cultures, backgrounds and experiences. We value and embrace inclusivity and diversity as a strength of our institution. Integration. We have a special responsibility to integrate ourselves not only with the University but also with our department and each other, the city of Bloomington, our hometowns, our other communities, and ultimately the world at large. More than being the right thing to do, this integration makes us stronger by giving us a greater understanding and appreciation of the world.
WE ARE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES. The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team calls us to be our best and to be successful. We want that for every student-athlete, coach and staff member in our department. We get there when each person serves his or her role as part of their sport, their office, our department and Indiana University. Because, even as individuals, we re stronger when we play as a team.
