The students will take part in the formal induction next spring, but will begin their membership now. November pm November 25 7:30 8:30am Junior Class Fundraiser WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE A NIGHT OFF FROM COOKING AND CLEANING UP DINNER??!! If the answer is YES then come join the Junior Class at The Landing at 7 Central Street, Manchester, for a fundraising event on Tuesday, November 19th, from 5-9PM. 20% of all proceeds from meals will go to the junior class so come on down, order up and let your server know that you are part of the fundraiser. In addition you will have a chance to buy tickets for a raffle to win a fabulous holiday party for people which includes 6-7 passed hors d oeuvres, cheese/fruit/veggie platters, and 2 hot dips with breads and crackers. We ll provide the servers you provide the venue (within 15 minutes of Essex or Manchester). Just in time for the holidays! NHS Tutoring Tutoring by NHS students is available on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 2:30 3:15. Students can find out more on the NHS bulletin board. Last Thursday was a full house! 3 Debate News Manchester Essex Hosts Annual Tim Averill Invitational Debate Tournament P a g e 3 Another successful Tim Averill Invitation Debate Tournament took place this past weekend at the Manchester Essex Middle High School. The tournament was efficient due to the collaboration of school staff, parents, students, debate coaches, and community members. On Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th, debaters from around the country competed in Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, and Public Forum Debate at the school. Rounds started promptly on Friday at 3:45 p.m. and concluded by 6:30PM on Saturday. The tournament has become known for the efficiency of the administration, the quality of the food and housing, and the good nature of the Manchester Essex students who make all competitors feel welcome. Throughout the tournament, Manchester Essex volunteers could be found judging rounds, serving food, cleaning the cafeteria, working at information tables, and performing other various tasks to aid the guest teams. After rounds were over on Friday night, many families graciously opened their homes to competitors from distant schools to stay the night. This allowed teams without the budget for travel to afford to come to the tournament as guests. Some families hosted as many as 15 students, which is greatly appreciated. The Manchester Essex Debate and Speech Program would like to recognize school staff and parent volunteers for their time to assist in making the tournament so successful. The school s cafeteria and custodial workers were present the whole weekend, including Andy McGilvary, Ed Parnell, Ben Gerrad, Pam Sharkey, Lillian Muise, Becky Xu and Maria Tumbiolo. Many Manchester Essex parents also helped serve food in the cafeteria, including Beth Davis, Amelia Irose, Liz Haynie, Betsy Milne, Cheryl Shnider, Cindy Conway, Joan Even, Linda Feuerbach, Susan Fournier, Virginia Spencer, Jan Albertazzi, Katherine Bonaccorso, Karen Clark, Karen Cochand, Jen Coles, Stacey Edelstein, Cathy Galli, Maria Gillespie, and Christy Palmer. Current coaches James Wallimann and John Mullady oversaw the many team members working at the information and concession tables, as ballot runners, and in the cafeteria. Additionally, parents and graduates of the debate program judged the three debate events on Friday and Saturday. These judges were crucial in making the tournament run smoothly. Judges include: Tim Malarkey, Stephanie Morgan, John Kiley, Ellen Hull, Steve Gillespie, Morgan Evans, Chloe Schwartz, Nicole D Ambrosio, Maggie Sears, Pam McCoy, Brenda King, Jim Haynie, Nancy Garvey, Sophia Martz, Shirley Decker-Lucke, and Kurt Decker- Lucke. In the tabulation room, Debate Coach Emeritus Tim Averill returned as tabulation director, and was ably assisted by current coaches Jen Coleman, Jessica Tran, and Josh Cohen, Director of Debate for the Massachusetts Forensics League. They were aided by senior Liz Warren, who entered data and arranged results packets with the help of current debaters Megan Clark, Jenny Cochand, Charlie Davis, Jack Haynie, Lucas Martz and Parker Malarkey. The tournament stayed on time throughout, and coach Karen Wolf of Falmouth (Maine) High School said, We love to come to this tournament because it is always well done from beginning to end. New York City Urban Debate League coach Eric Fogel concurred, noting, We ve been coming here for years. Thanks for the great tournament! Now that the excitement and commitments of the home tournament have ended, the team will now focus its efforts on preparing for the upcoming Dighton-Rehoboth Tournament, which will take place on November 9th. Once again, the team thanks all supporters of the program for making its successes possible. We have just begun this year s fundraising appeal, essential for us to maintain the level of competition that our students need and deserve. 4 Green Team Update From now on members of the Green Team will be monitoring the compost, trash, and recycling area at every lunch. This new system was put into place to prevent cross contamination. As one of the greenest schools in the country, it is our duty to reduce our waste output as much as possible. We must live up to the expectations that come along with being a sustainable school and because of that everyone s effort is needed. Green Team students will stand in front of the waste system in order to direct students as to where they should place their trash. Thank you for your cooperation. Brittany Smith is being recognized as October s North Shore Student Athlete of the Month! She is being recognized for her accomplishments on the Field Hockey Team and her outstanding scholastic achievements. She will be awarded two plaques to commemorate this honor - one to be given to her and one to be placed in the Manchester/Essex High School Athletic Awards display. It was announced that AJ Migonis will be honored at the CAL Coach of the Year for Cross Country. AJ has led the team through another successful season. Under his leadership, the team has flourished with personal best times and a supporting team community. Congratulations to the Football and Field Hockey Teams for the tournament victories this weekend. Good luck in your upcoming games!

5 Guidance Update MERHS Guidance Department will be hosting a Financial Aid Night on November 7th at 6:30 pm in the auditorium. A representative from MEFA will be presenting. Seniors who would like Quarter 1 grades sent to early action/early decision colleges should notify Guidance. Guidance will begin sending requested grades beginning the week of November 11th. The following colleges are scheduled to visit the MERHS Guidance Office this coming week. Seniors and Juniors may sign up to meet with college representatives in Naviance.
