1 75th Annual Conference of INDIANA Soil and Water Conservation Districts JANUARY 8-9, 2018 Indianapolis Marriott Downtown Hosted by the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts

2 1 Welcome to Indianapolis and the 75th Annual Conference of SWCDs! Beginning with the Vanderburgh County Soil and Water Conservation District established in 1940, Indiana s SWCDs have a long history of being stewards of the land. All 92 Conservation Districts in our state have now been in existence for over 40 years with ongoing success in a variety of activities and conservation work. Field days, Educational Outreach with local schools, Workshops for local landowners, and County Fairs are just a few examples of the commitment districts have in educating the citizens of our counties. For decades, the interaction in your local offices has served to connect landowners and farmers to needed resources for educational, technical and financial assistance in solving soil and water quality issues on their land and beyond. This is our Story. The IASWCD board has developed two task forces this year. These task forces are in the beginning stages of gathering information. The Funding Task Force is working to determine the appropriate funding that should be requested for a new dedicated funding source for the Clean Water Indiana program. The Staffing Task Force is gathering information with the goal of eventually providing tools that will be able to assist Supervisors and Staff in building District capacity as well as advocating for District resources. The Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative (CCSI) continues to move in a positive, new direction with an updated Strategic Plan. In March, I had the privilege of joining over 150 conservation leaders from across the nation for the National Association of Conservation District s (NACD) annual Spring Fly-In in Washington, D.C. Along with Indiana State Conservationist, Jane Hardisty, as well as Marc Roberts, Sara Delbecq, Ray McCormick and Gene Schmidt, we were able to meet with our representatives and senators to share the Story of Conservation Success in Indiana emphasizing the fact that Indiana has been proactive and is a leader in conservation and soil health proved to be another great year in Indiana conservation and partnerships. If you want to know all that the IASWCD accomplishes each year, please refer to the 2017 Annual Report you received in your conference packets. It will also be posted on the IASWCD website (iaswcd.org) after the conference. Thank you for attending the 75th Annual Conference of Indiana SWCDs. May it be beneficial to you as we move into 2018 and continue writing Indiana s Conservation Story together. Jamie Scott, President, IASWCD

3 Keynote Speaker Peterson Farm Brothers Greg, Nathan and Kendal Peterson, along with their sometimes honorary bro, Laura, are the 5th generation working on their family farm in Assaria, Kansas. They began creating YouTube videos promoting agriculture in Their parody music videos have now received over 45 million total views. They will be sharing their story, their social media experiences and how the power of communication through social media has provided opportunities and gained attention for agriculture and conservation. All three brothers have attended Kansas State University majoring in Agricultural Communications, Journalism, Agriculture Technology and Agribusiness. Greg Peterson, in his online TED talk states that their success has led to opportunities for him to travel all over the world and that he... gives presentations about how to tell agriculture s story because that s what our videos really do. They tell the story of agriculture. They give a glimpse into our farm and make people think about where their food comes from. Don t Miss Sunday Night s Session... Behind the Scenes of the Peterson Farm Bros How do they do what they do? Join the Peterson Farm Brothers as they explain what goes into their social media productions. From behind the scenes of making videos to explaining how they decide what, when, where, and how to post content; and, how to respond to negative comments. 2
