1 THE KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY CHILDREN S SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2011 June 1 - August 6
2 SUMMER READING 2011 The Kansas City Public Library wants to partner with you on your reading adventures this summer. Reading during the summer is not only fun, it helps you maintain your current reading level so that you are ready to pick up where you left off when you get back to school in the fall. It is simple to start: Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at your Library to receive a reading log. Use your reading log to track the time you spend reading. Visit your Library to get a reward for every 3 hours that you read. Read for 12 hours to complete the program and earn a book plus other prizes. There will also be drawings for additional prizes, so make sure and get your name in for a chance to win. Let the Library and our One World, Many Stories theme guide your reading all summer long! Summer Reading Events Celebrations with Alphapointe The Alphapointe Association for the Blind celebrates its 100 th anniversary by sponsoring story time sessions led by visually impaired volunteers reading from Braille books. These opportunities to learn about Braille conclude with every child receiving a specially designed keepsake card with his or her name typed in Braille. Serengeti Steve Experience the excitement of a Reptile Zoo! This is truly a unique and thrilling way to have hands-on involvement with some of the world s largest and scariest reptiles in a totally safe environment. The reptiles will be brought to the Library by one of the area s most experienced handlers: Serengeti Steve, with more than 20 years of experience! Guaranteed to be an awe-inspiring and fun-filled show! Harry and the Potters Harry and the Potters, wizard rock band, will once again rock the library! Don t miss the only chance to hear this amazing band before the last Harry Potter movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 opens this summer. : The Paul Mesner Puppets go back to the time of dragons, damsels, and dungeons in. This
3 production features a princess named Georgette. The King, her father, wants Georgette to stay in the kitchen, do her needlepoint, and get married. But she has ideas of her own. The story unfolds as Georgette disguises herself as George the Knight, who fights the earth-shaking dragon. Georgette conquers the dragon with brains and wit, forcing her father to recognize her true talents. Appropriate for ages 3 and up. Brian Wendling Presents: Juggling From Around the World Brian Wendling takes award-winning juggling from different parts of the world and shows how the story of juggling is universal and yet unique to different cultures. Mr. Stinky Feet s Road Trip Music is the international language of peace and friendship, and Jim Mr. Stinky Feet Cosgrove sings peace all over this world. Join him for a musical road trip to places near and far. Come ready to sing, dance, and play in the band! StoneLion Puppets Presents: SPELUNK! Saving Our Springs What do an ancient Native American treasure, a lost map, and a deep cave have to do with saving the world? Find out in StoneLion s latest adventure! Nathan Ready is always ready for adventure and this time he drags his friend Felicia into the search for an Aztec treasure rumored to have the power to solve all the Earth s problems. Along the way, they go spelunking in an amazing underground world full of shadow puppets, light-up puppets, original music, and just plain old fun! Cultural arts, geography, indigenous wildlife, and storm-water environmental education all wrapped up into 35-minutes of action-packed adventure. This bilingual production is most appreciated by K-5 audiences and their families. The Littleague The Littleague presents fun, high-energy hip hop geared toward children. Their mission is to provide positive, educational, and developmentally appropriate messages through music. Groovin Around the Globe With the Sugar Free Allstars What do you get by mixing a groovy organ, funky drums, and fun songs for kids? The Sugar Free Allstars! This two-piece band puts on a rock show full of high energy and family friendly tunes in different musical styles from around the country that make audiences clap and sing along. The Sugar Free Allstars made a name for themselves on the national level with two hit songs on XM/Sirius satellite radio s Kid s Place Live. SFA shows are full of body-movin beats and entertaining crowd participation that gets everyone involved. Music and Magic Show With Rappin Roy and Reggie Regg Rappin Roy keeps the songs fun and entertaining while Reggie Regg adds motivational messages to keep kids thinking big and focused on what s important for young people! children s summer reading EVENTS AT THE KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY children s Summer Reading EVENTS AT THE KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY
