NEW STODENTS URGED August 4, 1978 New students are urged to submit applications for enrollment in CSCSB by August 25. Cheryl Weese, Admissions Officer states,"tliis will enable the College to process their papers, assign registration priority numbers and have their registration packets prepared in advance." Students applying after the August 25 deadline may still be accepted but they will have to register for classes after everyone else. They must also have an interview with an admissions official. Qn-canpus housing in Serrano Village is limited and early application is also important in securing a room, according to Will Gordon, Resident Director. "Reservation requests for on-canpus housing are up 30 percent over this tune year and interested students should sign ip soon vdiile space is still available." ^ JACK MC DONNELL NEW Jack McDonnell, Chairman of the Department of Business FACULTY SENATE CHAIRMAN Administration and Associate Professor of Administra- tion, was elected to serve as Chairman of the Faculty Senate during Lynda Warren, Associate Professor of Psychology, and Edward Erler, Assistant Professor of Political Science, were elected Vice Chair and, respectively. Dr. McDonnell comes to the Senate chairmanship after serving since 1976 as secretary. In 1975 he was elected representative of the School of Administration to serve on the Faculty Senate and also has served on that schools's R.P.T. Committee since This is Dr. Warren's first year as a Senate Officer. Last year she was elected to the Senate as Representative-at-Large for a two-year term. The new secretary. Dr. Erler, was elected to the Senate in 1977 as a repre^ sentative from the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. NANCY SMITH SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED AT CSCSB A scholarship honoring Nancy E. Smith, former member and chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, has been established at the College. A Friends of Nancy E. Smith Committee, formed under the chairmanship of Dr. William Coleman, San Bernardino optometrist, is endeavoring to raise $6,000 by September 1 to launch the scholarship fund. This amount, when invested by the College Foundation, would provide an annual stipend of approximately $500 for a (Continued on page 21^

The scholarship fund was initiated by the San Bernardino Business and Professional Women's Club to honor Mrs. Smith, who retired in 1976 after 20 years on the Board of Supervisors. "Nancy Smith has always been a loyal supporter of the College," commented President John M. Pfau. "She was appointed to the College Advisory Board, a vital link between the community and the College, in 1968 and served for eight years." Earlier she was a member of the original planning committee which worked with College officials during the early stages when roads and utility services were being developed for the campus. GREGORY L. PRICE Gregory L. Price, Associate Professor of Physical Education EARNS EH D. IN P.E. and Recreation, has received notice from the Graduate School at Brigham Young University that he has coii?)leted all the requirements for the Doctor of Education Degree with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Recreation Education, Dr. Price's dissertation was on "Analysis of Attitudes Towards an Intramural Program." He joined the College in 1971 and is in charge of the Recreation Education Program. In addition to other P.E, classes he also teaches golf and body conditioning. it FACULTY WIVES CLUB Anne Crumhas been elected by the Faculty Wives Club to head ANNOUNCES ROSTER OF OFFICER'S the group as president in The new president is a graduate of CSCSB and has held a number of club offices in the past. The office of 1st Vice President is left vacant by the resignation of Kyla De Remer who is leaving the state and the office of Interest Group Chairman is left vacant by Ora Wolf due to job committments. 4 BERNHARDT MORTENSEN Bernhardt Mortensen, a 10-year veteran of the faculty ANNOUNCES RETTREMENT IS retiring on August 17, Coming here from four years of teaching sociology at Cal State U, L.A., he joined the CSCSB teaching staff as an assistant professor of sociology 1n His main teaching areas were statistical methods and mass communication. He was promoted to associate professor In In 1973 Dr. Mortensen founded the campus chapter "PI" of Alpha Kappa Delta, Sociology honor society, and served as Its first advisor. He was one of a committee who in 1973, under a CSUC grant, pioneered the comprehensive examination which allows students to spend a full term out of the classroom while preparing for examinations that serve as alternatives to regular instruction. After serving 20 years in the Air Force he retired from active duty with the rank of Lt. Col. While In the service he was the official historian of the U.S. A.F. His writings Include contributions to five volumes on The Air Force*^ In World War II, a six-volume series Including "The Clean Up," "Cutting the Enemy^s Lifeline,' and"the Admiralties." From the service he went to Cal State U, L.A. as assistant professor of sociology. He also taught at the University of Maryland. Although his graduate degrees are In the field of sociology, (M.A. from Cal State U, L.A. and Ph.D. from UCLA) Dr. Mortensen earned his B.A. in philosophy from UCLA and did three years of graduate work there in philosophy, also. Following his retirement, the sociologist-philosopher plans to spend most of his time writing and gardening at his home In Chlno. PETER BRISCX)E LEAVES CSCSB FOR UCR LIBRARY POSITION On August 28 Peter Briscoe, Bibliographer for the College Library, will tare over the duties of Chief Collection Development Officer and Head of Special Collections at the University of Riverside Library. There he will be in charge of an aimtial book budget of around $1 million. His staff will include four chief bibliographers, 20 subject specialists and the special collections department staff. He will be responsible for selecting books and periodicals for the university library, which currently has 900,000 volumes, and will be in charge of developing the library's collection. Mr. Briscoe, a Pacific High School and Valley College graduate, is also an alumnus of OCR, with a B.A. in philosophy. Prior to coming to CSCSB in 1973 as the College's first bibliographer, he served as reference librarian at Cal State, Sonoma.
