Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.' While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!' But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.' 2 November 12, 2017 Our Challenge Dear friends, Wisdom cannot be bought or borrowed. It cannot be re-designed for easy mastery or application. Wisdom is earned and learned in the ups and downs of human life. Yet true wisdom comes only to those who seek it. As long as we live we have opportunities to become stronger and to become wiser. Still Paul reminds us that life comes to an end. We dare not put off becoming today the person we want to be forever. The parable of the ten bridesmaids is a sad tale about people who hope to borrow what they need to get by in life. The foolish bridesmaids had the opportunity to prepare for the wedding feast, but they failed to do so, to their shame. We can admit that waiting for Jesus imminent return is difficult for most of us to entertain. But let us also recognize that opportunities for waiting on Jesus presence are all around us. Each time we work for justice, we testify to the presence of Jesus. Each time we bear each other s burdens, we testify to Jesus presence. Each time we advocate for the poor, or reach out to the friendless, or work to make this world a better place, we testify to the Risen Christ. We Christians are those who help each other to wait, prepare, and keep the faith. That is what it means to be followers of Christ, then and now. We come each Sunday to hear and share the hope and promises of our Lord. We can admit that we may grow weary in our work and frustrated by the lack of positive outcomes in our lives. We may discover we are like the foolish bridesmaid. Given this reality, let us reclaim the Church as a place where we can find support in our waiting. Have a good week! CONFIRMATION Teens confirm the fall of their junior year of high school. Preparation is required, including PSR for teens not enrolled in a Catholic school. Adult confirmation is hosted annually for anyone over 18. Please contact the parish office for more detailed information. MARRIAGE Couples are asked to contact the priest at the beginning of the period of engagement at least six months prior to the projected date of the marriage. CARE OF THE SICK Communion is brought to the sick weekly and hospital visits made weekly. Families of the sick are encouraged to notify the parish office. Aloysius parishioners and students have worked to design ornaments that represent each of the particular ministries that make up the Giving Tree.

4 GIVING TREE For many years St. Aloysius Parish has come together during the Advent Season with our traditional Giving Tree. As our focus turns to Christmas and Christmas shopping, the Giving Tree provides a way for parishioners to help those in need. St. Aloysius parishioners and students have worked to design ornaments that represent each of the particular ministries that make up the Giving Tree. You may choose an ornament from the baskets at the side doors of the church from November 18th through December 17th OR until the ornaments run out. Please pay particular attention to the items requested and the deadline for your gift to be returned to the church. You may keep your ornament as a reminder of our parish effort to help those in need. Please remember to pray for all those in need this holiday season. A special prayer is included on the back of the Giving Tree booklets located on the tables along with the ornaments. Please return your UNWRAPPED gifts by the requested due date (December 10th or December 17th) TO THE DESIGNATED BOXES in the BACK of the church. Booklets located at the side doors of the church detail the 11 ministries that are a part of this year's Giving Tree. As soon as her life began, she had responsibilities from being a royal pressed upon her. While Elizabeth was very young, her father arranged for her to be married to Ludwig IV of Thuringia, a German nobleman. Because of this plan, Elizabeth was sent away at the age of four for education at the court of the Landgrave of Thuringia. Elizabeth's mother, Gertrude, was murdered in 1213, when Elizabeth was just six-years-old. According to history, the murder was carried out by Hungarian noblemen due to the conflict between Germans and the Hungarian nobles. From this point on, Elizabeth's perspective on life and death dramatically changed and she sought peace with prayer. Happiness was returned to her young life in 1221 when she was formally married to Ludwig, whom she deeply loved. Together the couple had three beautiful children. Elizabeth continued to live a life full of prayer and a service to the poor. Ludwig, who was now one of the rulers of Thuringia, supported all of Elizabeth's religious endeavors even though she was a part of the royal court. She began to lead an austerely simple life, practiced penance, and devoted herself to works of charity. She used her royal position to advance her mission for charity.
