However, it can become difficult to maintain peak focus and energy levels. Experiencing culture shock, being away from family, and stress are important factors to consider. In this workshop, Thomas and Sheetal will talk about how to utilize support, overcome stigma in seeking support, and provide ideas to maintain care for your mental health, energy levels and effectiveness in graduate school.

NOW WHAT?, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF TEACHING ASSISTANTS 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m., and 10:30 am 12:00 p.m. 207 Olson Hall Teaching and learning in a research university are collaborative endeavors among instructors, teaching assistants, and students. This workshop will introduce common concerns, issues, and procedures in teaching and learning that you will encounter in your role as a graduate teaching assistant (TA). It will briefly introduce best practices that will be explored more meaningfully in the workshops tomorrow morning, Friday, Sept. 19. You will also be introduced briefly to campus services and other resources to make your work as a TA more successful. This session will describe what it means to be a graduate teaching assistant (TA) in a U.S. university and at UC Davis in particular. You will learn about typical duties and responsibilities of TAs, and come to see your importance in building and sustaining a respectful, productive learning environment for your students. Best practices towards achieving active learning for your students will be both described and practiced in this session. You will also learn about ongoing services available to you to improve your teaching.

5 SESSION B: WHAT COULD BE SO DIFFERENT?, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m., and 10:30 am 12:00 p.m. 217 Olson Hall This session will focus on the roles and responsibilities of undergraduate students those you will be teaching in U.S. universities and at UC Davis in particular. What do these students expect of you as a TA and what can you expect from them? This session will describe important characteristics of our diverse student population at UC Davis that you will need to know if you are to succeed in your teaching. You will also learn about ongoing services available to you to improve your educational relationship with students. SESSION C: CULTIVATING ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m., and 10:30 am 12:00 p.m. 251 Olson Hall Academic integrity and honesty are two vital concepts to understand if you are to succeed as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) in a U.S. university and at UC Davis in particular. This session will describe standards of academic integrity and honesty that you should expect from your students in your teaching, as well as typical ways in which students fall short of those standards or are confused about them. Intellectual property, plagiarism, and other concepts will be discussed. You will also learn about ongoing services at UC Davis, including Student Judicial Affairs, which can assist you in handling academic integrity issues with your students. SESSION D: COMMUNICATING ACROSS CULTURAL DIFFERENCES 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m., and 10:30 am 12:00 p.m. 261 Olson Hall This session will focus on ways to help you communicate more effectively with your students and academic peers. In the first part, we will focus on strategies for overcoming accent barriers, and in the second half we will talk about strategies for preventing and coping with miscommunication. WHEN A NO MEANS NO AND WHEN A YES MEANS YES 1:10 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Lisa Brodkey, Director, Harassment and Discrimination Assistance and Prevention Program (HDAPP), Leilani Kupo, Director, Women s Resources and Research Center, and Sarah A Meredith, Education and Outreach Coordinator, Campus Violence and Prevention Program This workshop will touch upon sensitive issues such as sexual violence and abuse. Sarah, Leilani and Lisa will also talk about ways to report these incidents on this campus. Graduate students will also get to know about some tools on how to intervene and help their peers.
