2 WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY - ICAA ACADEMIC & ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

3 Full-Time Status You must always be enrolled in 12 hours (full-time) to be eligible to practice and compete. Exceptions you need less than 12 hours to graduate; you are enrolled in graduate school. Note: You need to add and drop courses at the SAME time.

4 6-Hour Rule A student-athlete must pass 6 hours each semester to be eligible the following semester. A spring sport student-athlete must pass 6 hours during the spring semester to be eligible for MVC and NCAA post-season competition.

5 18-Hour Rule A student-athlete must always pass 18 hours between the fall and spring semesters to be eligible the following academic year. (Summer school does not count.)

6 24-Hour Rule A freshman student-athlete must pass 24 hours in his/her first academic year. The 24 hours can include: Hours you earned prior to enrolling at WSU Summer school hours at WSU prior to your full-time enrollment Fall semester hours Spring semester hours Summer school hours after your first year at WSU

7 Entering your 3 rd semester of college enrollment, you are required to meet the following percentage of degree and/or GPA requirements: Semester Percentage Required* WSU & Overall GPA Required 3 24 credits % (50 credits) % (75 credits) % (100 credits) 2.0 A student-athlete must declare a degree-bound major before the start of the fifth semester. *Degree length may vary. Most degree programs are 124 credit hours. Baseball: You must be eligible in the fall to be eligible for competition in the spring.

Please contact your Academic Advisor on campus AND Athletic Academic Coordinator if you have any questions about NCAA Eligibility requirements or WSU academic requirements.

9 You have an ethical obligation to complete your own academic assignments Your tutors are not meant to do your homework for you Plagiarism, cheating, falsification, tampering or grades will render you ineligible and most likely expulsion from Wichita State University Tutoring services should only be provided in the Downing Academic Learning Center, unless another arrangement has been provided by your academic coordinator.

11 NCAA Regulations - Employment May only be paid for the work actually performed May only be paid what other employees performing similar tasks are being paid May NOT be paid for your reputation as a WSU student-athlete May NOT appear in advertisement or promotion for your employer NCAA Regulations Fee-for-Lesson May NOT use WSU facilities Providing a playing lesson is prohibited Must complete Fee-for-Lesson paperwork in Compliance Office Fee-for-Lesson must be paid by the lesson recipient and/or his/her family Lesson fee charged must be comparable to other Use of your name, picture or likeness is prohibited to advertise lessons

12 Self-Employment May NOT use your name, picture or likeness to promote business Camps & Clinics Please notify your coaching staff and the Compliance Office when approached to work a camp or clinic not affiliated with Wichita State Athletics You should receive approval from the Compliance Office prior to beginning any employment opportunity.

15 What is an extra benefit? Any special arrangement by an institutional employee, representative of athletics interests (booster) to provide a student-athlete or his/her family with a benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation A student-athlete (or his/her friends or relatives) may not receive any benefit and/or arrangement that is not also available to the general student body QUESTION Is the benefit available to you because you are a studentathlete? OR Is the benefit available GENERALLY TO ALL WSU STUDENTS determined on a basis unrelated to athletic ability?

16 Types of Impermissible Benefits: Discounts & Credits NOT permissible to receive from an institutional employee or a booster Special discounts Payment arrangements or credit on a purchase (e.g., airline tickets, clothing) Services (e.g., laundry, dry cleaning) Free or Reduced Cost Services NOT permissible for a booster to provide a SA with professional services for which a fee would normally be charged Summer Workouts/Instruction Must pay the applicable rate to use workout facilities, gyms, and receive instruction from an outside coach Accepting benefits of any kind will jeopardize your intercollegiate athletics eligibility. Red Flag: Being offered anything at a reduced rate that is not available to the general public.

17 Types of Impermissible Benefits: Other Examples of Extra Benefits Use of a car Free housing Hanging out at a booster s home (e.g., lake property) Use of telephone, credit cards, etc. Securing a loan through a booster/coach Law services for free Chiropractic services for free Free tickets to sporting events and concerts Special access or seating to a club, sporting event, etc. Accepting benefits of any kind will jeopardize your intercollegiate athletics eligibility. Red Flag: Being offered anything at a reduced rate that is not available to the general public.

18 UNADVERTISED DISCOUNTS Receipt of unadvertised discounts not available to the general public is considered an impermissible extra benefit. Any discount must be advertised and available to the general public.

20 Occasional Meals A student-athlete (or entire team) MAY receive an occasional meal from an institutional STAFF member on infrequent and special occasions Reasonable transportation to and from meal is permitted Meal may take place on-campus, in the staff member s home OR at a restaurant in the local (30-mile radius) of Wichita State A student-athlete (or entire team) MAY receive an occasional meal from a Booster Reasonable transportation to and from meal is permitted if meal is at the home of the booster Meal may take place at booster s home, on-campus, or at a facility that is regularly used for home competitions o The meal may NOT take place at a restaurant Approval from compliance must be granted PRIOR to meal taking place

24 It is permissible to interact with agents and advisors.however, A student-athlete must receive permission from compliance prior to any contact with agents, advisors, or any associated with them A student-athlete will lose eligibility if you, your parents/legal guardians and/or friends accept any of the following: Meals Transportation Lodging Clothing Tickets Entertainment Enter into an agreement for future or current representation (amateur status will be lost and you will be deemed permanently ineligible) owritten agreement overbal agreement

26 Student-athletes are prohibited from gambling or wagering on any sport at any level that the NCAA sponsors Includes professional, collegiate and amateur (e.g., NFL, NBA, NCAA, high school, little league, etc.) Also includes fantasy leagues for money or prizes and bracket challenges on Facebook NCAA Bylaws prohibit administrators, coaches and student-athletes Do not provide/tweet any performance-related medical information on other student-athletes Gambling on WSU athletics will result in loss of all remaining eligibility Gambling on any team outside of WSU will result in loss of eligibility for at least one year Any student-athlete who engages in any activity to influence the outcome of a contest (e.g., point shaving) will be permanently ineligible for any intercollegiate competition

27 from NCAA on August 20, 2015 NCAA bylaws prohibit administrators, coaches, and student-athletes from participating in paid entry games or games offering prizes, whether those games involve professional sports or collegiate sports. As a result, participation in the fantasy sports companies games, including Fan Duel and Draft Kings, is prohibited by NCAA rules.

29 Basketball: 8 hours per week for a maximum of 8 weeks (June 6 through July 29, 2016) 2 hours can be skill instruction other 6 weights/conditioning Returners must be enrolled in at least one summer session in order to participate or meet academic nexus Golf: Coaches may participate in individual-workout sessions with studentathletes during the summer so long as the request is initiated by the student-athlete (Bylaw ) Tennis: Coaches may participate in individual-workout sessions with student-athletes during the summer so long as the request is initiated by the student-athlete (Bylaw )

30 Track & Field: Coaches may participate in individual-workout sessions with student-athletes during the summer so long as the request is initiated by the student-athlete (NCAA Bylaw ) Safety Exception: A coach may be present during voluntary individual workouts for field events, jumping hurdles or the jumping events of steeplechase to provide safety or skill instruction. A coach may provide safety of skill instruction but may NOT conduct the workout. Other activities remain voluntary (no coaches, no reporting back, no penalty/reward)

31 Thus for sports other than basketball No required activities over summer break (begins week before finals) coaches may not observe; Coaches & Strength staff may offer times when voluntary opportunities are available; Strength staff and student-athletes may not report attendance to coaching staff; May not be rewarded or punished (by staff or other student-athletes) for attendance at voluntary workouts To be considered voluntary, the following conditions must be met: Request must be made by student-athlete No reporting of information back to athletics department staff members No penalty for choosing not to participate in the activity, AND No rewards for choosing to participate in the activity

33 Outside Competition Volleyball Cannot participate prior to May 1 No more than two (2) student-athletes from WSU on a team Must complete a form and have athletic department approval first Outside Competition Golf /Tennis/Track May accept prize money during the summer vacation period with the provisions listed below: Event must be open (no invitation only events) Events must be after our WSU s playing season has ended (after MVC / NCAA) Prize money may not exceed expenses (actual and necessary for individual, not coaches) o Actual and Necessary expenses includes (1) meals, (2) lodging, (3) apparel, equipment and supplies, (4) coaching and instruction, (5) health/medical insurance, (6) transportation, (7) medical treatment and physical therapy, (8) facility usage, (9) entry fees, and (10) other reasonable expenses Prize money may only be provided by the sponsor of the open event

34 Outside Competition Basketball League participation limited to June 15 th through first day of class in August MUST be in a NCAA certified league (verify with us not the league operator) MUST have written approval from the Athletic Director prior to participation League must be within 100 miles of official residence or the institution May only participate on one team in one league No all-star games, 3-on-3 contests, etc. No more than two (2) student-athletes from WSU on a team

36 The NCAA could select a sport at Wichita State University for summer Drug Testing... Selected by NCAA as one of the summer testing schools may be tested whether in Wichita or not Positive drug test for banned drug classes other than street drugs results in a 365 day suspension and the loss of a year of eligibility Positive drug test for banned drug classes that are street drugs results in a minimum of 50% of a season in all sports and the loss of a season of competition Please make sure trainers know any supplements/medication you are taking some over the counter supplements contain NCAA banned drugs

38 Forms will be sent through JumpForward over the summer (middle/end of July) prior to pre-season meeting. Please complete ALL forms before arriving on campus in mid-august Financial Aid Agreements need to be signed and returned by August 1, Your financial aid agreement will be mailed and/or be available to you by July 1, If you are in town this summer, you will be notified by your academic coordinator when your agreement is ready to be signed. A student-athlete needs to make sure his/her contact information is updated (new address, phone number, etc.)
