Ivery Date: April 26, 2002 The American Association of Community College s 82 nd Annual Convention was held April 20-23, in Seattle, Washington. As you know, this is the conference where community colleges administrators gather to interact with colleagues from around the country, learning from each other and exchanging valuable information. A nice representation from WCCCD attended this year. Dr. Marjorie Oliver, Dr. George Swan and Dr. Carolyn Wade attended a pre-convention workshop entitled "First Time CEO's: Hit the Ground Running." Dr. Swan became a member of the President s Academy. As a result of discussions with the National Council on Black American Affairs membership director, efforts will be made to reactivate the WCCCD chapter of that organization. The Western Campus hosted the District-wide Spring Job Fair on Wednesday. Richard Lightbody coordinated the event. Forty-five employers and approximately 275 job seekers attended the job fair. Tony Arminiak, Alberta Eid, Mary Pequinot, Dr. LaVerne Thompson, Lorraine Colts, Daniel Martinez, Jo Ann Nyquist and Jean Whicker participated in this very successful event. On Wednesday, I met with Dr. Kenneth Burnley and several of his key administrators to discuss partnerships that the District and Detroit Public Schools may embark upon. We had a very productive meeting. Today I attended a presentation by Bob Gentile, Senior Vice President of FACTS Tuition Management. The FACTS program gives students the opportunity to make monthly payments on a schedule established and approved by their institutions. Through e- Cashier, institutions can offer a Web-based payment processing system to electronically accommodate the establishment of payment plans and eliminate the paper forms once necessary to handle the students wishing to sign up for monthly payments. The FACTS e- Cashier is unique in its capability to establish and process bank payments. Most on-line payment systems are limited to credit card processing. Since it operates on the secure FACTS computer, all programming, maintenance and security is handled by FACTS. As an Application Service Provider (ASP), FACTS provides e-cashier as part of their regular service to the institutions they serve. There is no cost to the institution to establish or use e-cashier.

A letter received by Richard Lightbody: Your invitation to visit and view your job fair was appreciated. It appeared as if your hard work and effort was paying off. I hope you had a great turn out. It was very kind of you to take the time you did to share what goes into having a productive job fair. One can tell that you have a great passion for what you do. I look forward to the day, when our new career system is up and running and we can participate in job fairs as well. I noticed our target audience walking the fair. 2. A letter I received from the State of Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council: I am pleased to inform you that the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council formally recognized Wayne County Community College District as a Regional Training Center. As a Regional Training Center, WCCCD is approved to deliver all courses listed on the Council s course menu. We would like to commend Anthony Arminiak for the time, care and detail he put into preparing the presentations for the Training Council. His cooperative relationship with the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and his sincerity of purpose make him a fine representative of your institution. We look forward to a productive relationship with the District and wish you continued success in providing fire training in your area. Educational Affairs Dr. Joann Pieronek, Vice Chancellor On Monday, Dr. Alex DePetro conducted a "mock" e-learning class at the Eastern Campus which was filmed by Bassett and Bassett for a potential commercial on "live and interactive" distance learning for WCCCD. On Wednesday, Dr. Pieronek was named to the Governor's Honor Roll for volunteer activities with the United Health Organization for 13 years. She participated in the luncheon sponsored by United Way Community Services. Also on Wednesday, Dr. Pieronek was a guest on the Straight Talk show hosted by Amyre Makupson. The topic was Career Opportunities: Exciting, New Fields to Consider. Students from Cooley and South Lyon High Schools made up the live

3 3 audience. The show will be aired, Saturday, April 27 at 11:30am on 62 CBS and again on Saturday, May 4, on UPN 50. On Thursday, Dr. Pieronek attended the Davenport University Educator's Luncheon. A highlight of the luncheon was a presentation by Robert Smith, a former board member of the Detroit Public Schools Golightly Academy of Finance. Workforce and Economic Development- Michael P. Dotson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Budget and Financial Reporting On Monday, Ethel Cronk, Anthony Arminiak and Dr. LaVerne Thompson met with William Musham of Romulus Community Schools, to discuss offering the Medical First Responder and Childcare Development Associate programs to juniors and seniors of the alternative education program. Additional discussion revolved around developing a WorkKeys assessment schedule for high school engineering students and those interested in pursuing the Michigan Merit Award upon graduation. Also on Monday, Faith Polk and Marian Thomas met with Joanne Cusmano, Dean of Continuing Education and Community Services, and Sherry Lefton, Director of the Learning Clinic at Marygrove College. Discussion focused on the planning of conference and training workshop activities aimed at agencies and organizations that offer before- and after-school activities for youth. On Wednesday, Faith Polk met city government, non-profit agencies and planning staff of the City of Detroit Employment and Training Division as part of an ongoing Career Development Strategic Planning Workgroup with a focus on information and resource identification. On Thursday, Faith Polk and Andre Jackson visited the United Way Community Services, Laid Off Worker Help Center to offer college admission and enrollment information to individuals interested in increasing their employment opportunities. Also on Thursday, Dr. Nancy Higgins presented the 2002 Carl Perkins Grant Application Summary to the Detroit s Workforce Development Board s Education Advisory Committee. Government Relations- Jonathan Cartwright, Director On Tuesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Kellyann Nagorsen, Account Executive of WDIV/TV 4, and Tim Gallagher, President of WMKM Radio Station, concerning educational programming. On Wednesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Rich Perry, Account Manager of WYCD-FM 99.5 and John Tatum, Account Executive of Comcast, concerning educational programming and imaging.

4 4 Also on Wednesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Paul Taylor, Director of Inner City Sub Center, concerning community outreach programs. On Thursday, Jonathan Cartwright met separately with Judith Witzman, Account Manager of WDWB-TV; Jerome Graham, Account Executive of Smooth Jazz V98.7; and Johanne Maggard, Account Manager of WNIC-FM, concerning educational programming and imaging. Also on Thursday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Edward Robertson from the Edward Robertson Institute concerning educational projects. Downtown Campus- Dr. Carolyn Wade, President On Tuesday, Glenda Norris hosted a seminar in acknowledgement of Alcohol Awareness Month. Topics focused on the perils of alcoholism. On Thursday, Pat Sanders, Executive Director for 50 HOOPS 2002, hosted a Minister s Brunch. 50 HOOPS 2002 involves African American men who suffer from prostate cancer or are recovering. Also on Thursday, Liz Chamberlain hosted the Phi Theta Kappa Spring Induction. The event publicly acknowledges those students who have academically expressed themselves as meritorious of such an honor. Eastern Campus- Dr. George Swan, President On Saturday, April 20, the Eastern Campus hosted the National Black Children Development Institute for an all-day child care and educators resource workshop. Over 250 people were in attendance. On Wednesday, WCCCD student Tiffanie Alston and the Poetic Flow Student Organization hosted the Poetic Explosion Workshop. Local poets Liberty Daniels, Leslie Reese and Dr. Gloria House recited and acted as panelists. Approximately 120 participants attended. Northwest Campus- Dr. Hattie Johnson-Norris, President On Wednesday, Jo Ann Nyquist and the dental hygiene students participated in an oral hygiene presentation for current graduates at SER Business and Technical Institute. Also on Wednesday, Dr. Johnson-Norris and Jean Hawkins met with Dr. Richard Wilson from Tried Stone Baptist Church to discuss the upcoming Community Day Conference. On Thursday, Dr. Johnson-Norris attended the 50 Hoops Luncheon at the Downtown Campus. 50 Hoops is a Prostate Cancer Awareness Foundation.

5 5 On Friday, Dr. Johnson-Norris and Theo Broughton, Community Activist, met with representatives from Full and Fabulous Inc., regarding future collaboration projects. On Friday, Dr. Johnson-Norris met with Sharon Dumas-Pugh, Director of Full and Fabulous Inc., regarding the upcoming Obesity Conference being held in August. Also on Friday, Dr. LaVerne Thompson attended the Young Educators Society of Michigan State Conference. Dana Butler, WCCCD student, received the $1,000 Dr. LaVerne E. Thompson Community College Scholarship. This week, Jo Ann Nyquist participated in the Northeast Regional Board licensure examinations for graduate dental hygienists at Lake Land College in Matoon, Illinois. Western Campus- Dr. Marjorie Oliver, President On Thursday and Friday, Ken Walker attended College Day at the Romulus and Westland Adult Career Centers. ***
