2 IMMACULATA ACADEMY Student Organizations Art Club * Character Club * Drama Club * Environmental Club * Franciscan Club * Gaming Society * International Neighbors Club * Library Club * Literary Magazine * Mass Choir * Mock Trial * Musical * National Honor Society * Newspaper * SADD * STAR * Student Ambassadors * Student Council * Tennis Club * UNYTS * Yearbook Student life at Immaculata Academy is enhanced by participation in extra-curricular activities. Each student has an opportunity and is encouraged to become involved in activities at IA through membership in various clubs and/or sports teams. Involvement in such groups promotes individual and group responsibility, leadership, respect and pride. Art Club The Art Club promotes the availability of artistic expression for all students. Teamwork is used to create projects that will be beneficial and expressive for all involved. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing, regardless of artistic ability, are invited to join. A. School wide enhancement projects, B. Set design for Drama Club productions Character Club The Character Club encourages all of Immaculata s young women to strive for excellence in character. Members will raise awareness of character throughout the school community by promoting specific virtues during the school year. Some other activities include: Helping the school community to celebrate WORLD recognition days of good character traits, the chance to attend Character Council Conference and many other fun activities. Active Membership Eligibility: All students who are in good academic standing and who believe in the mission/purpose of the club are eligible to join. Students cannot miss more than 5 meetings during the school year. Drama Club The Drama Club/Immaculata Academy Players holds as it mission a desire to create enthusiasm for the production and performance of live theater. Participants gain the skills of public speaking, acting, leadership, teamwork and personal responsibility. Active Membership Eligibility: All students who are in good academic standing are eligible. To be considered active members, students must participate in some way in the club s productions and attend club meetings. In addition, those who receive roles in productions as a cast or crew member are expected to attend assigned rehearsals. A. Musical Production (3 performances) B. Christmas Production (1 performance during school day) C. One Act Play Competition (1 evening performance) D. Spring Play (2 evening performances) E. Set design, backstage work, sound and light design for each performance
3 Environmental Club The purpose of this club is to explore environmental problems in relationship to our ecosystems. We will address local and global concerns through research, discovery and action. Particular activities include: exploring/initiating green initiatives within and outside of IA, recycling within IA, becoming more aware of global warming issues and touring environmentally - friendly places within the Buffalo area. Active Membership Eligibility: All students who are in good academic standing are eligible. Franciscan Club Through service activities, liturgical ministry, and social gatherings, the members of the Franciscan Club seek to grow in harmony, respect, service, peacemaking, stewardship, joyfulness and prayer, which are integral components of Immaculata Academy s Franciscan charism. Pro-Life is an entity of the Franciscan Club. We will make a difference by forming consciences and having our voices heard on issues that affect our lives and the common good. Active Membership Eligibility: All students who are in good academic standing and who are interested in the mission/purpose of the club are eligible to join. Members cannot miss more than three meetings. Must be eager and willing to have fun! A. Homeless Hangout B. Various charitable activities C. Catholic Charities Activities G. Participating in Diocesan Pro-Life activities, i.e.-march for Life in Washington, D.C. Gaming Society D. Annual Diocesan Youth Convention E. Annual Father/Daughter Dance F. Raising awareness of Pro-Life issues The Gaming Society intends to provide a social outlet for its members and either introduces them to the game of chess and other board games or further improves their skills. Novices will have the opportunity to become familiar with the various games. Those already familiar with the games will have the opportunity to enhance their over-the-board skills. The society allows the casual and serious player to enjoy the challenge of these games in a forum that satisfies their social and competitive needs. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing. No previous knowledge is necessary. Attendance at 80% of the meetings, and participation in at least one mini-tournament each semester is required. Instrumental Program Play an instrument! Students at Immaculata Academy have the opportunity to participate in instrumental lessons during the school day. Lessons are offered once a week through the Paul Effman Music Service. Instruments may be rented or purchased through Paul Effman. Student may choose to study: saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, percussion or guitar. No experience is needed! Instrumental students play regularly at the fall and spring concerts. Come and make some music! International Neighbors Club The International Neighbors Club fosters an appreciation for the cultures and peoples of other lands. Students will be educated as to the different customs and traditions of countries of the world. They will be given an opportunity to enjoy the food, music, and holiday festivities of these countries. Handicrafts will also be made. Active Membership: All students who are in good academic standing are welcome to join. 90% attendance is required to maintain membership. A. Día de los Muertos B. Chinese New Year C. Christmas and Easter D. Mardi Gras E. National French Week F. World Language Week
4 Library Club The mission of the Library Club is to encourage IA students to share in the joy and rewards of reading by working to improve and promote the library and its services. Members will learn to work cooperatively, establish leadership and decision-making skills, develop presentation techniques, create themed displays and coordinate promotional events. Active Membership Eligibility: Any student in good academic standing and interested in the purpose of the club is welcome. Members cannot miss more than three of the club s meetings. Library Club members will plan, organize and participate in events and activities related to libraries and reading. Some examples include: A. Teen Read Week (October) B. Library Lovers Month (February) C. National Reading Day (March) D. Poetry readings Literary Magazine Club E. Themed parties F. Sponsoring reading/library skill contests G. Book discussions The Literary Magazine Club promotes the arts and literature by giving students the opportunity to publish their creative works, including poetry, fictional and essay writing and artwork. The Literary Magazine Club encourages students to showcase and take pride in their talents. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing are eligible. Members must attend at least five meetings. A. Springtime meetings B. Proofread and edit text C. Group writing types and artwork Mass Choir D. Layout magazine E. Enhance computer skills Mass choir is a club for anyone who likes to sing. Students in mass choir sing at the in-school masses throughout the year. This club will meet four times in September and then once a month, usually the day before a mass. Active Membership Eligibility: Any student in good academic standing, regardless of in school music participation, is welcome. Singers must attend 2 of the September rehearsals. To sing for a mass, a member must be present for the rehearsal directly preceding that mass. Mock Trial Club Mock Trial fosters analytical reasoning, public speaking, and logical thinking. Members must prepare a defense and prosecution side of a given case. The members then present their prepared materials in competition with other local area high schools. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing. Members must attend all seasonal meetings. A. Regularly scheduled meetings with our lawyer B. Competition with other high schools at Buffalo City Court National Honor Society The mission of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in students. Active Membership Eligibility: Juniors and seniors who maintain a cumulative average of 95% or higher are invited to participate in the selection process. The NHS Charter is available for perusal at any time. Members must attend monthly meetings. Must attend 90% of meetings. A. Individual service projects (10 hours) B. Group service project C. Induction Ceremony D. Mother-Daughter Social E. General service to the school as needed
5 Newspaper The Newspaper Club provides students the opportunity to express themselves in writing while reporting on news relevant to their school and the world around them. Members learn the desktop publishing techniques necessary in order to produce a school newspaper at least quarterly which will be distributed via the Immaculata website Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing are eligible to join. In addition, all members must attend at least 90 percent of club meetings. SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) The members of SADD realize the importance of staying drug, alcohol and substance free. Being aware of the consequences of substance abuse, the members work to show others how productive and successful one can be without the use of chemicals. The members also value the safety of all persons and are willing to stand up to peer pressure, both in and out of school. Activities include: A. Red Ribbon Week B. Mock Accident with Big Tree Fire Dept. STAR (Students for True Animal Rights) Have you ever cried when you see an animal get hurt in a movie or real life? If so, then the STAR club is for you. This club strives to increase sensitivity toward animals through hands on activities and fundraisers, while continually focusing on the rights of animals. Active Membership Eligibility: Any student in good academic standing and is interested in the welfare of animals their protection is welcome to join. To be considered an active member, the student must attend at least 90% of club meetings A. Visiting and fundraising for the SPCA B. Field trip to Hawk Creek to learn about animal rehabilitation C. Field trip to the zoo D. Pro-active projects, e.g. petitioning to stop the slaughter of wolves and wolf pups in the national parks; to banish puppy mills ; to save the whales; to stop killing the wild horses in western US, etc. Student Ambassadors Students have the opportunity to represent and promote Immaculata Academy at local elementary schools and at I.A. school functions. Members are grouped into teams and work closely with the Admissions Director throughout the year. Active Membership Eligibility: All students maintaining an average of 85% or better are invited to participate. Student Council The Student Council provides students with opportunities to plan and execute school-wide activities and to influence decisions and policies in the school where appropriate. The skills of representative government, leadership, accountability and creativity are put into practice by the members of the Student Council. Active Membership Eligibility: Each homeroom elects two students (in good academic standing) to be their representatives at Student Council meetings. These are voting members. Members cannot miss more than four meetings. Any other student is invited to attend meetings and voice her opinion and/or give input. These are non-voting members. Students who wish to serve on an activity committee do not have to be members of the Student Council. A. Spirit Week and Lock-in B. Bears Lair store to raise funds for scholarships Tennis Club C. Help with Freshman orientation D. General service to the school as needed Students have the opportunity to take lessons and learn how to play tennis, The sport of a lifetime! The lessons are taught by a pro at the Southtowns Tennis Center in Orchard Park. There is a fee. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.
6 UNYTS (Upstate New York Transplant Services) The UNYTS- Donate Life Club promotes community awareness of the need for and importance of donating blood, tissue and organs to those in need. This club would be a great fit for any student interested in pursuing a medical career, science, and preserving and saving lives. Members will learn about healthy habits, leadership and a variety of medical professions. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing. Field Trip to UNYTS to visit medical professionals and Donate Life Headquarters Leadership Summit, Poster Contest. Donate Life Celebration Yearbook The Yearbook staff produces a quality yearbook that will evoke fond memories of the time spent at Immaculata Academy. Active Membership Eligibility: All students in good academic standing are welcome to join. To maintain membership, members must attend at least 90 percent of all club meetings, as well as actively contribute to yearbook content with pictures, text copy, or pages. A. Take pictures B. Write copy C. Create pages Sports Teams D. Sell patrons E. Enhance computer skills Fall Winter Spring Cross Country Bowling Softball Golf Basketball Track & Field Soccer Indoor Track Lacrosse Volleyball Hockey Students in good academic standing are encouraged to try out for a sports team. Student athletes represent Immaculata Academy as they participate in inter-scholastic sports competition with other high schools.
