4 Residential Student Life Academics We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. Walt Disney As students conclude their education at The Calverton School, the goal of the Upper School is to help them develop into strong, independent, selfconfident individuals with a firm foundation in the liberal arts. Upper School students are expected to develop the self-discipline to determine their academic needs and ends and to assume the primary responsibility for their own education. The development of cognitive and research skills necessary to succeed as a student is an integral part of a Calverton Upper School education. As a college preparatory school, Calverton is committed to providing each student a firm background in the basic content areas. At the same time, the Upper School recognizes the importance of athletics and extracurricular programs in establishing a sense of responsibility and commitment to the community. Each student's contribution to the Upper School is important and students have many opportunities to become involved and to develop their leadership potentials. At Calverton, athletics, the arts, publications and student government are open to any student with the interest and willingness to make the commitment. A valued goal of the Upper School is to have students learn that they can and should return to the community something for what they have received. A pattern of service to the School is developed early and maintained in the Upper School, while service to a wider community outside of Calverton is strongly encouraged of all Upper School students. 5 Residential Student Life Housing and Activities Residential Student Housing is in Homes where an American family hosts several students. Houses are located on or near campus and provide a unique experience for our students to learn the American culture. Student Life During the Week Students attend classes from Monday through Friday afternoon. During academic days, students will attend classes and study halls from 8:00am until 3:15pm. Students will be able to participate in clubs and sports after school until 6:00pm. Dinner for students is served at home followed by mandatory study time for academics. Students have access to wifi both on campus and in the houses to facilitate communication to home as well as for academic support. Student Life on the Weekend Students are given a variety of options for activities on the weekend. Each activity is designed to give the students an american experience to further understand the american culture. Activities included but not limited to MLB Baseball at Orioles Stadium, Smithsonian Visits, US Capitol Visits, Washington DC, Baltimore, canoeing, biking, beach, and other unique experiences in the area. Students are given opportunities to spend a weekend with a local Calverton family where they will learn more about the American family experience. Student Life on Holidays Students will have the opportunity to celebrate several American holidays such as Thanksgiving, Presidents Day, and Spring Break. During the winter holiday break, students are required to leave the house to return home or visit a relative in the United States. Some winter residential programs may be available that provide certificates in certain academic and cultural studies. Summer break provides an opportunity for students to return home or advance their studies through summer programming. Page 5
