1 Fall 2013 Newsletter louisville.edu/retired Message from the President Volunteer opportunities. The reason I want to mention these is in response to a survey taken by ULARP. In that survey many expressed interest in volunteering. I want to share three different opportunities of which I have recently become aware. Two are within the University and the third is in the community. The University has developed a pilot leadership program for staff. It is scheduled to start in September of 2013 and continue through May of It is hoped that once this pilot is complete and evaluated that it will become a permanent staff development program opportunity. Bill Forman, ULARP President So where is the volunteer opportunity in this program? There will be a need for mentors who will help guide the staff participants in their quest to develop leadership skills. This will be an excellent way to have a one-to-one relationship with staff employees, improving their leadership skills with the added benefit of helping the University as well. A second way available within the University is to be involved in a staff development program, providing seminars to University employees who might be interested. The topic of the seminar would be dependent on your particular area of expertise. So, retired faculty who might be missing providing information to groups in an informal classroom setting might want to consider this one. Just imagine, teaching without needing to provide a syllabus, requiring papers, or even giving/ grading final exams. How good would that be? If you are interested in either or both of these, contact Mary Elizabeth Miles in Human Resources at (502) The community opportunity is with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. They are launching a new program in an attempt to recruit big brothers and big sisters 55 years of age or older. This is an untapped resource that can help close the gap caused by having many more children needing big brothers and big sisters than there actually are to fulfill the need. Anyone who volunteers in this effort will tell you that they get far more out of volunteering than the child gets out of them being there. 5 New Chinese Law: Visit your parents Meng Meng and Katie Hunt, for CNN A new national law introduced in China requires the offspring of parents older than 60 to visit their parents frequently and make sure their financial and spiritual needs are met. People are accusing young people of not visiting their parents enough, says Lola Wang, a 28-yearold marketing officer in Shanghai. She makes a six-hour trip to Shandong province in eastern China to see her parents twice a year -- once during the Lunar New Year and again during the National Day holiday in October. Wang adds that she agrees with the aims of the law. Admittedly, some of them use their career and long working hours as an excuse. My problems are that I do care about my parents, but I have little vacation and my parents live far away. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, China had about 185 million people above the age of 60 at the end of The figure is expected to surge to 221 million in 2015 and by 2050 a third of China s population will be classed as elderly. Neglect The Law of Protection of Rights and Interests of the Aged was amended by China s legislature last December after a spate of reports about elderly parents neglected by their children. In one particularly horrific case in China s eastern Jiangsu province, a local television station reported that a farmer had kept his 100-year-old mother in a pigsty with a 440-lb sow. Chen Shoutian told the station his mother had been happy to live there: She wants to stay here because she feels it is convenient, he said. A modest pension and social welfare system, particularly in rural areas, means elderly people are usually dependent on their children for support. More than a fifth live below the poverty line, according to figures from the National School of Development at Peking University. Changing values Although respect for the elderly is still deeply engrained in Chinese society, traditional values like filial piety have been weakened by the country s rush to modernity. The traditional family support system is eroding for many reasons and I think the government would like to slow this process down, said Albert Park, the director of the Emerging Markets Institute at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The law stipulates that children cannot give up their inheritance rights in attempt to evade their duty to take care of their parents. It adds that children should pay a monthly allowance to their parents if they refuse to take care of them. The legislation also allows for the elderly to sue their children but does not specify the process or what penalties they might face. It may also prove difficult to enforce, says Ding Yiyuan from Beijing Yingke Law Firm. He told the Guangzhou Daily newspaper the law fails to qualify the word frequently. He added that few elderly people were likely to sue their own children. louisville.edu/retired 5

6 Retiree Spotlight: Dr. Bob McFadden program in mathematics. That was delayed by a state moratorium but was eventually approved in 1978; it is flourishing today. Of course he became the coach of the newly- formed NIURFC while May worked in a bank and for the American Automobile Association. Their daughter, Rachel (UIC), who now lives in Louisville, and their son, Andrew (Iowa State), currently living in Batavia, Ill., were born during the NIU time. Bob and May enjoy travelling to Illinois to visit their two grandchildren. When in 1989 UofL decided to apply for a doctoral program in mathematics, the dean of Arts and Sciences, Victor Olorunsola, appointed Bob as chair to head up the project. After some opposition, the newly-expanded team in the department was successful in obtaining the program, which is still doing well today. Bob is retired from that department as Professor Emeritus and now serves as ULARP s treasurer. Dr. McFadden and his wife May are both from Belfast, where they spent the first several years of their marriage. Robert Bob B. McFadden received his B.A. with First Class Honours in Mathematics from the Queen s University of Belfast (QUB) in Northern Ireland, followed by his master s and doctorate from QUB. Coming to the United States in 1964 on an academic visit, Bob taught at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he played rugby for the IU Rugby Football Club while May worked at the First National Bank in DeKalb and later at Triple AAA. After a further year at Louisiana State University they returned to Ireland where Bob finished his Junior League rugby career and became a referee instead. Bob was hired at Northern Illinois University in 1968 to join a team recruited to start a doctoral May and Bob joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), advocating, teaching and fund-raising. As part of that volunteer work they each graduated from LMPD s Citizen s Police Academy. Bob also participated in the Crisis Intervention Program that trains Louisville police officers for work with persons in crisis from severe mental illness. Still active in NAMI, they continue to travel. Bob reads and spends time unraveling the differences between Apple and Microsoft products, and maintains his interest in rugby, but at a different level. For example, on Aug. 31 of this year he blew the first whistle blast to start the alumni rugby game at NIU, where the new intramural complex was dedicated. (Immediately after that blast he scampered off the field, tossing the whistle to the official MAC referee.) Bob is like most retirees; busy, but loving it! 6 louisville.edu/retired
