1 March 14, 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 Tornado News Inside this issue: Principal News 1 FFA Food for All Grant 1 Counselor Corner 2 State Testing 2 Leadership Student Update 2 Scholarship Corner 3 Student Honors and Activities 5 Principal News By Brian Wharton State Wrestling and Basketball Show Off Students and Community Over the past two weeks our incredibly talented wrestling teams and girls basketball program had the opportunity to strut their abilities at the highest levels of competition in Washington. They made us all proud. At the same time our incredible Yelm community demonstrated it is also in a league of its own. At the Tacoma Dome and at the various basketball venues, our crowds always had the most students and adults. We were also the loudest and most positive. Where some schools might have a dozen or so supporters, YHS had hundreds. Thank you to our parents, our student body and our band for truly being a model of support for our student athletes. Thank you! CONGRATULATIONS TO DYLAN HYDER! Dylan is a 2011 graduate and Valedictorian from Yelm High School, and Dylan was appointed to the Air Force Academy. Dylan wrestles for the Air Force and competed in the 2013 NCAA West Regional/WWC Championship at 133 lbs. Dylan won the championship, and will go on to wrestle in the NCAA Nationals. YHS wishes Dylan good luck at the National Tournament. Special points of interest: Business Partners support schools Student Honors/Activities Family Access Yelm FFA Receives Food for All Grant Indianapolis The Yelm FFA chapter in Yelm, WA has been awarded $2,500 as part of the FFA: Food for All program. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support yearlong service and learning projects focused on developing and implementing sustainable hunger relief efforts. The Yelm FFA plans to help fight hunger by having members establish a raised bed gardening system and donate the produce to a local food bank. In addition to the raised bed garden, they will also conduct a promotional campaign titled Plant an Extra Row which encourages gardeners to plan an extra row of produce in their garden and donate it locally. Their kickoff event will be a local 5k run (see last page for info) that will be used to promote the Plant an Extra Row campaign. The FFA: Food for All grant program is administered by the National FFA organization, with funding provided in part by Farmers Feeding the World and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. The program provided approximately $323,000 to FFA chapters in 42 states. More information about the program can be found at foodforall.

2 Page 2 Tornado News Counselor Corner Now is a critical time for Seniors to make sure they are wrapping up all of the final "To-Dos." Culminating projects should be completed (except for the presentation), High School and Beyond Plans on WOIS should be up-to-date and near completion. Caps and gowns should have been ordered. All seniors should review their credit status and make sure all graduation requirements have been met so nothing interferes with graduation. It is the policy of Yelm Community Schools that seniors must complete ALL graduation requirements to be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies. SENIORS IMPORTANT INFO! Please check with that your name is spelled correctly on the list outside the office or the YHS website. This is how your name will appear on your diploma and in the graduation program. CAP and GOWN Seniors if you have not ordered your cap and gown you need to do so immediately by visiting Herff Jones website at hjgraduation.com. Please check out the YHS website for a Senior Check list and other information important to graduation. Special points of interest: YHS Landscape Design and Greenhouse Management classes were awarded certificates of appreciation for their work in front of the new Support Operations Center. See page 6 for more details State Testing Schedule for State tests are administered at Washington Public High Schools for reading, writing, algebra, geometry and biology. Because attendance on test days is critical, we want to get the schedule out several times so families can plan accordingly. Test Date Test Title Who Takes This Test? March 12-14, 2013 HSPE Reading and Writing All sophomores and any junior or senior who has not yet passed May 29 End of Course Biology Exam All sophomores May 30 End of Course Algebra End of Course Geometry Any student who has yet to take or pass. Class of 2013 and 2014 must pass 1 EOC math test. Class of 2015 must pass both Algebra and Geometry Student Leadership by President McKenzie DeVore Teamwork...being a part of the Yelm High School Girls Basketball team that had a record of 20-5, teamwork was the name of the game. Starting off the season with two losses in league, we had to come together as a team to get back on track for State. We did just that! We worked well together every game and every practice which landed us in a loser out game in the 4A State tournament. Even though we lost that game, looking back now we can not dwell on that one game because our season was amazing. Having to work as a team day in and day has really taught me how to work as a leader. Right now we are working on a Talent Showcase, a Staff vs. Student basketball game, another anti harassment, intimidation and bullying presentation and another student recognition ceremony. With so many projects going on at one time, teamwork is crucial. Working together while trying to accomplish all of these goals helps make the process that much smoother. -McKenzie DeVore, ASB President
