Last year, New Mexico performed admirably at the NCAA Regional meet as the men finished 12th and the women were 14th. Sophomore Ben Ortega led UNM with a 26th place finish in the men s 10K, while junior Ashlee Othick placed 34th in the women s 6K. The Colorado men and women ran away with both team titles in 2000, ahead of the runner-up BYU men s and women s teams. LAST TIME: The University of New Mexico men s and women s cross country teams each improved on their 2000 conference finishes, placing fifth at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27 at the Paradise Hills Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. 2 to lead the Lobo men, while sophomore Sarah Gonzales 16th place finish in the 6,000 meters led the women s team. Second-ranked Brigham Young University ran away with its third straight Mountain West women s title, while the 16th-ranked Cougar men edged No. 22 Colorado State by seven points for their third consecutive championship. In the women s race, BYU senior Tara Northcutt was one of seven Cougars to finish in the top nine as she captured the individual championship in a time of 21:00. Colorado State s Marget Larson was the only non-cougar in the top five, finishing fourth in a time of 21:09. For the Lobos, Gonzales had another fine race at the Paradise Hills Course, completing the race in 22:22, the Lobos fastest 6K of the year. Freshman Jackie Gallegos followed close behind Gonzales, taking 19th in a seasonbest 22:31. Senior Kim Baca turned in another solid performance, finishing 35th in a season-best 23:32. Freshmen Venaasa Funston, Amanda Woods, Laura Marquis and Racquel Ricci all recorded season-bests as well to round out the Lobos top seven. Overall, New Mexico finished with a score of 139 which was 34 points better than its 7th place score at the 2000 MWC Championships. On the men s side, Utah senior Teren Jameson jumped out to a big lead and cruised to his first MWC title, winning the 8K race in 23:54. Jameson s effort propelled the Utes to a third place finish behind No. 9 Air Force and BYU. Meanwhile, New Mexico finished 66 points better than at the 2000 conference championships to take fifth, just one point behind 22nd-ranked CSU. Gonzales, who finished just 25 seconds behind Jameson in a UNM season-best 24:19, earned first team all-mountain West Conference honors as the runner-up, while fellow sophomore Ben Ortega earned second team all-mwc honors, finishing 10th overall (24:46). Sophomore Chris Orrell (22nd, 25:21), freshman Cameron Clarke (23rd, 25:26) and freshman Chad Dawson (33rd, 25:59) capped the scoring for UNM. Four Lobos placed in the top 25 on Saturday after just one runner finished among the top 25 at the 2000 conference meet. LOBO MOUNTAIN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW: MEN The New Mexico men's team is coming off one of its finest regular seasons in several years. Despite fielding one of the youngest teams in the Mountain West Conference, with five sophomores and one freshman in the top seven, the Lobos have come together under second-year coaches Matt and Mark Henry. UNM dominated regional rivals UTEP and New Mexico State in its season-opener, scoring an impressive 18 points en route to a victory at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. After defeating LSU to take second at the UNM Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico cruised to victory over ten teams, including UCLA and Arizona State's "B" team, at the ASU Invitational. The Lobos wrapped up the regular season with a solid showing at the elite NCAA Pre-Meet, taking 15th in the Black bracket. Two weeks ago in Albuquerque, UNM placed fifth at the MWC Championships, just one point behind No. 23 Colorado State. Though Travis Clark is the only senior on the squad, the young Lobos have thrived because of their outstanding depth and solid grouping of the top seven. In all four regular season meets this fall, New Mexico s top five runners have finished no more than 1:40 apart from each other, while the top three have finishes no more than 62 seconds of each other. Sophomores Matt Gonzales, Chris Orrell and Ben Ortega have led the team in each of its four races this season with Orrell and Gonzales notching a pair of victories. Gonzales, a Division II All-American at New Mexico Highlands University last year, has placed among the top 25 in each race and has recorded four of the team's top 10 8K times this season. Two weeks ago, Gonzales earned finished second at the MWC Championships, just 23 seconds behind Utah s Teren Jameson. Orrell has a three top five finishes this season, while Ortega, the MWC 10,000-meter outdoor track champion last spring, has recorded four top 15 finishes this season and earned second-team all-mwc honors with his 10th place finish at the conference championships. Rounding out a talented top seven for New Mexico is Clark, sophomores Sean Flaherty and Nick Martinez, and freshman Cameron Clarke, who have combined for 11 top 20 finishes. Freshman Chad Dawson also could be a factor at the Mountain Regional meet after having his best race as a Lobo at the conference championships, running fifth on the team. 3 WOMEN Despite losing its top three runners from 2000 (Ashlee Othick, Jackie Morgan and Hannah Radzinski), the UNM women's team has been competitive in every meet this fall. Like the men, the women's squad is dominated by youth with seven freshman and three sophomores rotating among the top seven. New Mexico displayed good potential at the start of the season with a pair of second place finishes at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational and UNM Lobo Invitational earlier this fall. Two weeks ago in Albuquerque, UNM ran well at the Mountain West Conference Championships, moving up two spots from 2000 to take fifth, just 15 points behind fourth place Utah. Sophomore Sarah Gonzales has emerged as the surprising leader of the women's team after spending much of 2000 as the team s sixth runner, finishing no higher than 21st. During the off-season, Gonzales committed herself to the coaching staff s training program and has subsequently developed into one of the best young runners in the MWC, placing 16th at the conference championships two weeks ago. Despite her diminutive 5-1 frame, Gonzales has recorded three of New Mexico's top four 6K times and has three top 20 finishes this fall. Last month, she had the best performance of her collegiate career at the Paradise Hills Golf Course, blowing away the field at the UNM Lobo Invitational for her first career victory. Like Gonzales, senior Kim Baca had an outstanding off-season of training and is also enjoying her finest collegiate cross country season this fall. Perhaps the most consistent member of the team, Baca has three top 25 finishes and three of the team's top 10 6K times. Meanwhile, freshman Jackie Gallegos, a three-time New Mexico high school state champion, has displayed outstanding potential in her first season of collegiate competition. Gallegos rebounded from nagging injuries and illness to finish 19th at the Mountain West Championships and has three top 20 finishes and two of the team's top 10 6K times. A bevy of other young runners will also be counted upon to step in and help the Lobo women with some much-needed points on Saturday. Sophomore Erica Harker and freshmen Venaasa Funston, Amanda Woods, Laura Marquis, Racquel Ricci and Sarah Fraher could all be in contention for the Lobos' crucial fourth and fifth scoring positions. GONZALES & ORRELL EARN MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS: University of New Mexico sophomores Matt Gonzales and Chris Orrell were each selected as the Mountain West Conference Men s Cross Country Athlete Of The Week this season, becoming the first Lobos to earn the award. Orrell became the first UNM cross country athlete to earn Athlete of the Week honors after her recorded his first collegiate victory on Sept. 1 at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational in Santa Teresa, N.M., winning the 6.6K in a time of 21:20. The Albuquerque, N.M. (La Cueva HS) native led UNM to a convincing victory, as the Lobos finished with a score of 18 points, 29 ahead of runner-up UTEP and 54 points ahead of third place New Mexico State. Orrell, who recorded three of New Mexico's top five 8K times last season, was one of seven Lobo runners to finish in the top 10 at the Lori Fitzgerald Invite as UNM finished just three points shy of 15, the lowest score possible in a cross country race. A month later, Gonzales was selected as the MWC Athlete of the Week after winning his first meet as a Lobo at the Arizona State Invitational on Oct. 5. Gonzales completed the 8K in 25:32.3, leading UNM to its second victory in three meets over a 10-team field that included Western Region No. 10 UCLA and No. 15 Arizona State s B team. The Santa Fe, N.M. native recorded his third top 10 finish in as many meets and clocked the team s fourth-fastest 8K this season. Orrell finished 5.7 seconds behind Gonzales in second as New Mexico placed all five scoring runners in the top 20 to finish with a score of 31, 25 points better than second place UCLA. Gonzales joined Orrell as the men s second individual meet winner of the season.
