1 The network dedicated to New Hampshire s professional music teacher teaching, performing and composing. On the Web at November 2011 Volume XXXIV, No. 42 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It is a privilege to be your president for and I hope we can join together to make NHMTA an exciting organization for our students and ourselves. I would like to propose that each of us find one teacher who is not a member of NHMTA and encourage them to join. Working together we can introduce many more teachers to the benefits of MTNA membership. Can YOU reach out to one new member? The Quad State Conference at Tufts University was a huge success with many exciting sessions on the topic of Nurturing the Creative Spirit in Our Students. New Hampshire was well represented by Eva Nagorka, who moderated the panel on this very topic. Christine Petrucci gave the master class lesson to the high school student in Love at First Sight Introducing a New Piece, and Carleton Coughlin, 3 rd grade student of Pamela Quirinale was the elementary student in the same master class. As the 2011 Composer of the Year for NH, Craig Sylvern s composition, New England Rhapsody, was premiered by Marcia Lehninger, violin, and Christopher Swist, marimba. I was so glad to see so many NHMTA members present, too. The MTNA National Conference is in Eastern Division this year yes, it s in New York City, March Visit the website for detailed information regarding sessions, schedule, showcases, exhibitors, events, tours of NYC, hotel reservations and registration. If you register before December 1, you will get last year s rates and save $50! Go to: One can learn so much from one day at a conference, but four days is unbelievable. If you haven t ever attended an MTNA Conference, this might be the time to do so. It s close and in an exciting city. I m looking forward to seeing many of you there. 3 SEACOAST CHAPTER NEWS Dear Fellow Music Teachers, Seacoast NHMTA had our first meeting of the year in September. We were thrilled to welcome four new teachers to our group. On October 29, Seacoast NHMTA will have hosted sixty students performing in Halloween recitals at Langdon Place Retirement and Rehabilitation Centers in both Exeter and Dover. I am thrilled that we are able to involve so many students of all levels and abilities. Upcoming events include a meeting and educational session in November and an Honors Recital for our more experienced students. In December, we will host a Holiday Recital open to all students. It s always a pleasure to see so many students enthusiastic to perform for each other. I would like to congratulate Seacoast members and officers Lynne Wilby and Christine Petrucci for earning their national certification. Great job, ladies! A group of teachers are still working to finish our certification projects and have been enjoying group study sessions. For more information about the new certification process and to jump on board, please visit: or Dr. Carleen Graff at carleeng@plymouth.edu. If you are interested in attending a meeting or other Seacoast event, please feel free to contact me at Meagan.maganti@gmail.com. We would love to have you join us. 4 2012 EVALUATIONS Are you looking for an opportunity to motivate your students? The 2012 evaluations give your students a chance to polish a few pieces to play for an adjudicator. The evaluations are not graded or competitive. The adjudicators provide helpful comments and a professional point of view about the students playing. Students work very hard for this event. What other aspects of the day may be helpful in advancing your students education? The evaluations provide an opportunity for students to explore music theory, technique, and ear training using the Keynote Independent Theory Service (KITS). There are workbooks for you to use in your lessons to provide a spiraling curriculum. The yearly KITS test that will be given at the evaluations includes theory, ear training, and technique and is available in seven different levels. You may find out more information at Because the workbooks provide a whole curriculum you should plan on starting these workbooks as soon as possible. Each year a composer of the year is featured. Who is the composer of the year? This year we feature the music of both Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. Students have the opportunity to perform one of their pieces or any piece by a Romantic composer for a special prize. Students can also learn about the Mendelssohns. A biography will be in the February NHMTA newsletter. There is an optional composer quiz given at the evaluations. Where and when are the evaluations held? The evaluations will take place at 5 locations in New Hampshire on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in May We will hold them at Seacoast Academy of Music in North Hampton, Presidential Oakes in Concord, Plymouth State University in Plymouth, Darrell s Music Hall in Nashua, and at Pianoforte in Chocorua. Please look for specific dates and times in the February newsletter. How do I sign my students up? The application is available in the NHMTA yearbook or can be found at It is due to the area coordinators on April 2, Who do I contact for more information? Please State Chairperson Meagan Maganti at Meagan.maganti@gmail.com for more information. 4
