2 2 Hollin Hall Senior Center Advisory Council Members: Officers: President Vice President Secretary Co-Treasurer Co-Treasurer At Large: Meetings: First Thursday of Every Month,, Room 217 All Are Encouraged to Attend. Thursday, December 6 Thursday, January 3 Thursday, February 7 Elections are held every November. The Nominating Committee begins talking to members In September about becoming part of a very active Advisory Council. These meetings are open to the membership. If you are considering running for the Council, you are welcome to join us at a Thursday meeting. Advisory Council President s Meanderings: Veronica A. Cartier It is time to say hello to the start of winter, our coldest season of the year. The name comes from an old Germanic word that means time of water and refers to the rain and snow. Are you prepared? Ready or not, here it comes! With chilly days and unpredictable weather on the way, it s important to do everything you can to maintain your health: Wash hands, drink plenty of liquids, and get plenty of sleep. Although the weather outside may be gloomy, that doesn t mean you should cut down on your level of activity. However, ice and snow may cause hazardous conditions. Check with staff before venturing out regarding senior center closures and parking lot conditions. Advisory Council election results are not available at time of printing. They will be posted in the center. To all the bazaar volunteers, Thank you! Veronica A. Cartier

3 3 Hollin Hall Senior Center Advisory Council Liaison Program The Liaison Program began close to 10 years ago when the Council President at that time wanted a better way to communicate questions and concerns from the general membership to center staff and the center s Advisory Council. On the other side of the coin, a way was needed to help disseminate and share information from the staff and Advisory Council to the general membership. A list was then created of all recurring programs, activities and club meetings; day/days and time the club meets, room number assigned and club leader s name. Each Advisory Council member would then be asked to choose several clubs they d be interested in being a liaison to. To make it easy, for instance, an Advisory Council member could choose an activity they already attend, making it easy to take Center information to that club leader and to take any requests or issues back to the staff and Advisory Council. The liaison makes occasional visits to the club leader they re assigned to in order to see if there are any needs or requests, or to communicate any pertinent information from staff regarding policy and procedure. This streamlined the way information was put out to the membership from the staff and the way staff was able to hear and address the concerns and requests of the membership. 6 6 HEAR YE! HEAR YE! HEAR YE! Kaps 4 Kids Have you heard of us? Sure, you read that we are a part of Hollin Hill Senior Center...BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT WE DO? This group of volunteers makes (knit/crochet) hats and scarves for school children in our local communities. We have been doing this for almost 30 years. Throughout the year we also make handmade items for sale at the Hollin Hall Senior Center s annual bazaar every October. The money raised in this way goes directly to the senior center to augment programs and activities for seniors. In 2018 the Needlework group raised approximately $2,000 for the center. Near the beginning of November each year the hats and scarves are distributed locally to elementary schools and charities that share with children. Our distribution for 2018 included 1,100 items (approximately 825 hats and 275 scarves). Kaps 4 Kids volunteers meet each Tuesday in Room 201 from 1-3 p.m. If you think you are interested, please come to one of our group meetings and check us out. You do not need to be a member of Fairfax Senior centers to participate in our endeavor. So if you have a neighbor or friend that wants to join, they are welcome (age is not a factor). We have yarn, needles and patterns or you can bring your own. If your knitting/crochet skills are rusty, we have people that can help you dust them off. We also accept donations of good/usable yarn. (Contact: samfoley1@verizon.net OR ) If you are not able to join us on Tuesday afternoons, you are still welcome to make hats and scarves for Kaps 4 Kids; just drop them by the office.

9 9 News You Can Use Gentle Courtesy Reminders You MUST scan or sign in at the concierge desk BEFORE going to your program. Attendance numbers help to validate the purpose of the center being here plus aid staff to ensure everyone s safety in the building in the event of an emergency. There are no more guest fees allowed at the center. You must have a membership to participate (with the exception of an open to the community stated program) Although Center hours are stated as being 9 a.m. 4 p.m., the staff kindly ask that any late afternoon programs begin closing at 3:45 p.m. This allows you to clean up and take a bathroom break before the Center closes. This is a large building and it takes a while to close entirely by 4 p.m. Your cooperation is much appreciated. When attending our informational health and other educational programs, please be attentive to the speaker. Wait until the end of the program to ask questions or at a time when the speaker asks the audience for any questions. This allows others to be able to listen and be fully engaged to get the most out of the program they re attending. Hollin Hall Senior Center Trips Wednesday Trips of Necessity (Shop N Nosh) require a 5-person minimum sign up for the trip to occur. Please alert staff if you ve signed up for a trip in advance and need to cancel. Charter Trips (other trips to museum exhibitions, sporting events, etc.) require an 8-person minimum sign up for the trip to occur. Again, please alert staff if you ve signed up for a trip in advance and need to cancel. The staff take your trip suggestions seriously. A lot of planning goes into the process of scheduling a trip. Talk it up with your friends and other center members to ensure that we have enough people for the trip to be a success! A trip policy with guidelines is in the process of being finalized by our agency, DNCS. In the future, there may be consequences for late cancellations and No-Show s. Please be respectful of the trip planning process, those on wait lists, and utilizing our transportation resources wisely. Other Tidbits Dynabands are for sale at the country store located by the Concierge Desk! There is no longer a computer bulletin board outside of Room 109. 11 11 Meet Sunny! He has been a part of our non-profit in the past and we are forming a new non-profit here in NoVA, for equine therapy, and he will be a part of that organization. I thought I would ask you about bringing Sunny to visit Hollin Hall as we have had other people, in Lorton, make requests that we bring him to their sites. It made sense to me that I offer the same here where we live in Waynewood. He has been used by several children including my daughter, who has ridden him since she was four. She is now too big to ride him as she is nearly 10 years old but many other children still ride him and my daughter takes care of him. He's the sweetest, most gentle horse I have ever been around I have had him since he was one (so about 12 years) and is a very sweet mini that loves everyone Don Michem Hollin Hall is anxious to meet its newest Volunteer, Sunny, a miniature horse being groomed for equine therapy. Stay tuned for more to come!
