6 2004 Outlook WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS OUTLOOK Marlyn Madey The 2004 edition of the NC State gymnastics team will look to build upon last season s success. NC State finished last year with a record of 22-6, and finished the regular season ranked in the top-25. Six NC State gymnasts were named to the All-EAGL first and second teams, and at the conference meet the Wolfpack came away with a second place finish and its highest road score in school history, a (a mere behind host New Hampshire). The year s Wolfpack squad will be led by a strong senior class. The six seniors on this squad have all competed successfully over the years, and this season will be looked upon to provide NC State with quality scores. NC State also returns as many as five underclassmen who have seen time last year, and will provide some of the strongest routines for NC State this season. A deep class of eight freshmen will also be vying for time on coach Mark Stevenson s squad. I think we will have the opportunity to increase upon what we did last season, said Stevenson entering his 24th season. It s just a question of how well the youngsters step up and hit routines that will make us better then last season. I think everybody is so excited about the opportunity to do something special this season. THE SENIORS "Overall the group of seniors we have this year is the most score prolific class that we have ever had at one time, said Stevenson. This group alone could potential make up half of our routines. You can't get a better group of leaders as far as their work ethic in the gym and the way they perform in school. They represent us extremely well both in the gym and outside." Marlyn Madey (Hockessin, Delaware) returns to NC State for her fifth season. Madey missed both of her first two seasons at NC State due to a foot injury. Madey first saw action in 2002, and competed on bars, beam and floor in every meet. Last season Madey was even better in all three of her events, and was named to the All-EAGL first-team for bars. She won the bars title in seven meets last year, and finished second at the EAGL Championships. "This year I think you will see Marlyn in the all-round slot for us, said Stevenson. After missing her first two seasons here at NC State, she has just continued to improve, with last year being her best so far. Her three routines have always been solid for us, and her vaulting is really picking up because her foot is feeling better." Leah Sabo (Hubbard, Ohio) provided a huge Alison Bundy boost to the NC State lineup last season after transferring from Utah. Sabo competed in the all-around in every single meet, and was named to the All-EAGL second-team for both floor and the allaround. She led NC State in scores over 9.9, and she also won at least one title in every event, with a grand total of 12. "Leah just walked in last year and filled a huge void for us in the all-around, doing four events in every meet last year, said Stevenson. She'll probably be doing four events in every meet for us this year as well. She has upgraded her vault and bars, and both beam and floor are looking as good if not better then last year. She has brought a lot to our program in a lot of different ways." Molly Pennington (Dover, New Hampshire) had a breakout season for NC State last year on vault. Pennington was named All- EAGL first-team, competing on vault in every meet. She finished in the top-10 in every single meet, and in the top-five in eight of the final nine meets. Pennington also led the way for the Pack with her four vault titles. "Molly is going to be one of our top kids once again, Said Stevenson. We are going to count on Molly to go out and compete at the same level she did last year. She is a great competitor, just a hardworking young lady." Alison Bundy (Concord, North Carolina) has been a staple in the Wolfpack line-up her Cheryl Potacco 4

7 first three seasons here. She has seen action on every event except bars, competing on both vault and floor in the final seven meets last season. "Alison is one of those kids that walked on four years ago, and I have no doubt that she will be one of our top floor people this year, said Stevenson. She also has a really good shot at competing on beam, which she hasn't done since her freshman year. He whole presentation has grown so much over her four years, and I know she will have a strong season for us." Cheryl Potacco (Kinnelon, New Jersey) made her way back into the Wolfpack lineup last season. As a freshmen she was injured in the very first meet, and was still recovering in Last season Potacco was in the Pack s lineup on vault in every meet, winning one title, and she also competed on bars. "Last year Cheryl did a nice job for us especially on vaulting and a back-up on bars, said Stevenson. This year I think more then likely compete on both vault and bars, and has good potential to break into the lineup on beam. She has become more consistent on beam, and will be given that chance." Mary Freyvogel (Monroeville, Pennsylvania) is a three-time member of the EAGL all-academic squad, and is working her way into the lineup on balance beam this season. "Mary did a great job for us when she was moved into the line-up on beam at Auburn last year, sad Stevenson. She hit a routine that day that we really needed. Her overall presentation has come along really nice, and she is ready to step into the beam lineup for us now." putting her in the lineup in those three will bring positive results each time." Cori Goldstein (Plainview, New York) had perhaps one of the most consistent seasons for NC State a year ago. Goldstein was named to the All-EAGL second-team for both beam and floor, competing on both events in ever meet. "Cori is a two event kid for us, and she'll be doing the same again this season, said Stevenson. Every time she steps out on both her events, beam and floor, she will give us strong scores. Twelve meets of 9.85 or higher from Cori in two events will really help us, and she is more then capable of doing so." Andrea Petrocelli (Pasadena, Maryland) was limited to just one meet last season, after going through two knee operations. As a freshman in 2002, she competed on both vault and beam, and finished the year with a fourth place finish on beam at the EAGL Championships. "We lost Andrea for most of last year, said Stevenson. She came off of knee surgery, and just as she was getting back and ready to go she reinjured the same knee and had to undergo the same surgery. She is back in the gym now, and she is looking good. She is looking better on vault and bars, and will be in our beam lineup if she stays healthy." Both Jennifer Gray (Irwin, Pennsylvania) and Krystal Hairston (Duluth, Georgia) are beginning their third season with the Wolfpack. "Jen has really come a long ways for us, she is always working hard everyday in that gym, said Stevenson. Krystal has decided to really step it up this year, and is fighting for a spot on vault. Both girls are great students and just a pleasure to have around." 2004 OUTLOOK THE JUNIORS Kelley Kello (Virginia Beach, Virginia) was NC State s other transfer that made a huge impact last season. Coming from Iowa, Kello competed on bars, beam and floor in every meet. She was named to the All-EAGL firstteam for bars, and had one of her best meets late scoring at least a 9.8 on all three of her events at the EAGL Championships. "Kelley just walks into the gym, and every single time she just hits her routine, said Stevenson. She came in to our program last year and made a huge difference, helping us out in three events. I see her competing in those same three once again, and I know Leah Sabo THE SOPHOMORES Kylah Bachman (York, Pennsylvania) had one of the most successful freshman campaigns at NC State in recent memory. She was named to the All-EAGL first-team on beam, and competed on vault, bars and beam throughout the year. "Kylah is probably one of the most pleasant surprises we've had in a long time as far as an athlete goes, said Stevenson. She is a great kid and a great student. She walked in and did three events last year, this year she'll do four. She continues to upgrade her routines, and she'll be one of the best gymnasts we've had by the time she is done." Beth Faulkner (Charlotte, North Carolina) was able to see time on vault last year as a freshman. "Beth saw some time early on vault last year, and really helped us when we had a bunch of injuries, said Stevenson. She is in the gym working on vault again this year." THE FRESHMEN "This is probably the best class we've ever had. There is a lot of talent, and they 5WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS 2004

8 6WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS OUTLOOK work hard. They are going to make an impact for us. There are at least three, potentially four, who are going to walk in and compete in events for us this season." Leading the way for the freshmen class this year is Rachel Katz (Bloomington, Indiana). Katz finished in the top-10 in the all-around and on vault at the 2003 nationals, and should be in the Wolfpack lineup in the first meet of the season. Rachel is probably our top freshmen coming in, said Stevenson. She finished in the top-five nationally on vaulting last year. She will be in the lineup on both vault and floor, and right now she is looking good on beam with a chance there. Also looking to come in right away and forge their way into the lineup are a trio of talented performers. Amanda Jones (Jacksonville, Florida), Kaitlin Kovary (Huntington Station, New York), and Katie Ozburn (Marshall, Virginia) all have potential to see action as freshmen. Amanda has worked so hard since she has been here, said Stevenson. She has a really good shot at bars, beam, and floor, plus one day has the potential for vault. I think she is one of those kids that will make an impact as a freshman. Kaitlin has a tremendous amount of potential, it will just take her a little amount of time to break into that lineup. She is somebody we can count on if somebody goes down, to walk in and take their place. We think Katie could potentially do vault for us, and possibly beam. She is a great worker in and out of the gym, and could break into the vault lineup towards the middle of the year. Thee other freshman will be worth keeping an eye on their improvement this season. Brooke Outland (Bonlee, North Carolina), Suzanne Price (Chapel Hill, North Carolina), and Arien Stainback (Beaufort, North Carolina) are all in-state prospects looking to compete early. Brooke does anything we ask of her, and she does extra beyond that, said Stevenson. If she continues to work as hard in the gym as she is now, she has a shot of seeing time. Suzanne is a local kid who has walked-on with us. We are still getting to know her, but we have seen how hard she works and their is potential there. Arien is another kid in there working hard everyday to improve her skills. One freshman unable to compete this season is Chrisann Calvo (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania). Right now I don t think Chrisann will not compete for us this year, said Stevenson. After we signed her, she tore ligaments in her wrist which is a pretty serious injury. We d like to save this year and let her us it when she is back healthy THE SCHEDULE While NC State can not look ahead to the end of the season already, the entire program is looking forward to April 3. For the first time in school history, NC State will host the NCAA Regionals on its home floor. For the Wolfpack to advance to the NCAA Championships, NC State must be one of the top two teams in the regional meet. "We are really excited about hosting the NCAA Regionals this year, said Stevenson. It is a big meet, probably the biggest meet we've hosted in my 24 years here. It will be a challenge, but this will be a meet which our team and our fans will enjoy because of the level of competition that the NCAA Regionals always feature. The rest of the schedule features five home meets. NC State opens up its 2004 slate at home January 9 against William & Mary and Brown. After hitting the road for five straight away meets, the Wolfpack will host the Hearts Invitational February 13. Other home meets will be February 27, March 5 (The Wolfpack Invite), and March 14. The EAGL Championships will be held at Pittsburgh the weekend of March 20, before returning to Raleigh next year.

20 Head Coach Mark Stevenson 24th Season THE STEVENSON FILE WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS 2004 HEAD COACH Mark Stevenson has taken the NC State women s gymnastics program and built it from the ground up. Stevenson has been the only head coach NC State has had, and now enters his 24th season. Through hard-work of his own and each of his teams, Stevenson has has made the Wolfpack into one of the top programs in the country while competing in one of the most competitive regions in the nation. COACHING EXPERIENCE Massachusetts Assistant Coach, NC State University Men s Assistant Coach, Head Coach, 1981-present Totals His teams have earned trips to the postseason 20 times and have been ranked among the top 25 for much of the past 15 years. The Wolfpack won back-to-back EAGL conference titles in 1999 and 2000, and were well represented in each of the eight EAGL meets, coming away with a top-three finish in six of them. Following the Pack s second straight EAGL title in 2000, Stevenson was named the NCAA Southeast Regional Coach HONORS AND AWARDS EAGL Coach of the Year, 1998 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 2000 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 1994 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, 1993 EDUCATION B.A. Iowa, 1978 recreation resource administration M.A. NC State, 1984 recreation resource administration ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE Iowa: team captain, second in Big Ten in vaulting, qualified for NCAA nationals Mankato State: competed in diving gymnastics team finished season conference champions of the Year. For Stevenson, it marked the third time he has won the award, and also has an EAGL Coach of the Year award to his credit. Under Stevenson s leadership, the Wolfpack has averaged over 21 wins a year the last 12 years and captured two EAGL championships and four individual event championships, including Kelli Brown s win on bars 18

21 at 2002 EAGL Championships. Furthermore, Stevenson has had 25 gymnasts earn 70 spots on All-EAGL teams since NC State helped start the league in He has also coached Christi Newton, who was the league s Gymnast of the Year in 1996 and Kara Charles, who was the Rookie of the Year in Like many of his gymnasts, Stevenson, who has 319 wins to his credit, has been recognized for his work. He has been named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year on three occasions, in 1993, 1994, and 2000, and was named EAGL Coach of the Year in So much of the credit belongs to the kids, Stevenson explains. It s hard to describe how proud I am of them. In the past, our gymnasts have been kids who weren t heavily recruited, but they have worked hard to get where they can compete with the best programs out there. I am especially proud of the kids for often being the underdog, but still getting the job done. We haven t won every meet, but we have beaten a lot of teams that we should not have been able to compete with. I can t tell you how good it makes me feel to have the kids come in at one level and then leave at a much higher one. NC State s success in meets has carried over to the classroom as well. Since 1984, 60 gymnasts have been named to the ACC s academic honor roll 121 times, while 47 have also earned spots on the EAGL all-academic team. Last season all four graduating seniors, Cara Dougherty, Aimee Panton, Stephanie Southard, and Adian Stock were all named to the EAGL all-academic team. The Wolfpack earned its highest academic honor to date following the 2000 season, when they ranked 16th in overall GPA for the academic year in the scholastic All- American team rankings released by the National Coaches Association. NC State was also named a 2002 NACGC/W Academic All-American team with 10 different gymnasts earning academic All-American honors. With the increase in scholarships, we ve been able to recruit better students, Stevenson says. I promised myself several years ago that if I had a choice between a fair gymnast with good grades and a good gymnast with fair grades, I would take the fair gymnast and help them become a better one. Attendance at meets has grown with the success of the his program. Last year, NC State ranked 11th in the nation for attendance averaging over 1,800 fans per home meet., and the Pack has been ranked in the top-20 each of the last six seasons. In 1998, NC State set an EAGL single-meet attendance record with 6,196 fans for its meet against Georgia. To continue to help increase Wolfpack attendance, Stevenson has spearheaded efforts to sell season tickets and find corporate sponsors for meets. The success of the NC State gymnastics program can be attributed to his coaching philosophy, which involves recruiting lowerlevel gymnasts and walk-ons and helping them raise their skills to a higher level. Stevenson has first-hand experience with this approach. He began his competitive career at Iowa as a walk-on and went on to become a national championships qualifier. I went through the hard process of being a walk-on when I was in college, Stevenson says. So I have a spot inside for kids who aren t satisfied with their skills and who want to work hard to become better athletes. A lot of schools don t take that approach because you have to teach them and help them develop their skills, but teaching them is what makes it fun. We recruit the best gymnasts we can find. We look at their academics, how much gymnastics have they already done and how long they have competed at a particular level. The longer you work at one level, the more tired and beat up you get, so that kid won t make it through four years of college or if they do, their skills will be the same. We d rather see them grow as gymnasts and help them raise their skill level. Stevenson coaches gymnasts outside the NC State program. Until it was sold a few years ago, he ran the Triangle Twisters, a gym school in Durham, N.C. He also runs state meets at various levels, often on weekends that the NC State team competes at home. During summers, he coaches at Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Woodward, Pa., where he is a director. He is also an officer of the EAGL, serving as the league s secretary and is responsible for awards at the league championships. Prior to coming to NC State in 1980 as an assistant coach for the men s gymnastics team, Stevenson served as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts for one season. The Minutemen compiled an 11-3 record and produced one All-American during his tenure. Stevenson graduated from Iowa in 1978 with a B.S. degree in recreational education. At Iowa, he served as a team captain during his senior season. At the Big Ten Conference Championships in 1978, he placed second in the vault and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where he scored a In 1984, Stevenson earned his master s degree in recreational resources administration from NC State. 36 East Atlantic Gymnastics League WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS 2004 EAGL Both Marlyn Madey and Kelley Kello were named All-EAGL first-team for bars last season. A total of six Wolfpack gymnasts were honored by the EAGL on the all-conference teams. Now in its ninth year of existence, the EAGL became a reality on July 31, 1995, when eight prominent universities banded together to form a league created to showcase women s gymnastics on the East Coast. Representing three conferences and six states, the EAGL is comprised of Maryland, North Carolina and NC State of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and West Virginia of the Big East Conference and New Hampshire and Towson of the America East Conference. In August 1996, the NCAA Council accepted the EAGL as an official affiliated member of the NCAA. EAGL schools have brought a great history of success into the league. Towson tallied eight East Coast Athletic Conference titles as a member of that league, while New Hampshire had four. West Virginia won four Atlantic 10 Conference crowns before leaving that league to join the EAGL. All eight schools have competed in regional competition, while New Hampshire, NC Morgantown, W.Va. West Virginia Towson NC State Maryland New Hampshire North Carolina Pittsburgh Rutgers Raleigh, N.C. West Virginia NC State New Hampshire Pittsburgh North Carolina Towson Maryland Rutgers State, Towson and West Virginia have gone on to NCAA Championships competition. The EAGL has also showcased the 1997 national gymnast of the year, West Virginia s Kristin Quakenbush. And in 1982, Pittsburgh produced NCAA bars champion Lisa Shirk. During the 1998 season, was when NC State became the first league member to qualify for the NCAA Championships and Rutgers became the eighth and final EAGL school to qualify for the NCAA regionals. The Wolfpack went on to represent the EAGL well, finishing 11th in the nation, while the Scarlet Knights regional berth means that all eight league schools have been to postseason competition. A charter member of the EAGL, NC State has had its share of success as a league member. In its first year as an EAGL member (1996), the Wolfpack s Christi Newton was the league s top performer, earning EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Senior of the Year honors. Then a junior, Stephanie Wall tied the Mountaineers Quakenbush for first place in the all-around. The Wolfpack continued to enjoy success in 1998, with Kara Charles earning Rookie of the Year and Mark Stevenson earning Coach of the Year honors. More important, NC State earned its first ever berth in the NCAA Championships and went on to record the second-highest score ever for a first-year team. In 1999, the Wolfpack set a new standard for itself when it earned its first EAGL Championship, while setting an EAGL Championship record with a team score of , and finished the season ranked 13th in the nation just one spot away from competing in the NCAA Championships. NC State also ended West Virginia s three year run as conference champion, and became only the second different school to capture the EAGL Championship. The following year, 2000, was once again one of the Pack s most successful seasons in the conference. NC State won its second consecutive conference title, with senior Jenny Sommer finishing in a tie for first on beam and becoming the school s third individual champion at an EAGL Championship. After a disappointing sixth place finish in 2001, NC State once again finished in the top half of the league in 2002 by scoring a for a fourth place showing. At New Hampshire in 2003, NC State recorded its six top-three finish in eight years. The Wolfpack set a new school record with its road score of , and it was also the third highest score in school history. Based on the amount of success it has enjoyed in the short time it has existed, the EAGL has begun to emerge as a powerful conference. In the next couple of years it could rival many of the usual gymnastic-powerhouse conferences Towson, Md. 37 NC State Facilities CARMICHAEL GYMNASIUM The NC State gymnastics team enjoys the luxury of practicing and training in Carmichael Gymnasium, which includes a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility. Constructed 13 years ago, the gymnastics facility was designed by State coaches Mark Stevenson and Sam Schuh. Wolfpack gymnasts are proud and fortunate to have such a facility. The complex seats 800 spectators and can be expanded to accommodate 1,200. Overhead rigging is in place for most of the apparatus. In addition, the area features an in-ground pit system that provides an arena for performance, practice and instruction of new routines with the highest degree of safety. Two of the pits are positioned for work on the uneven parallel bars and tumbling while a third pit is used for work on the vault and the balance beam. REYNOLDS COLISEUM Located on the NC State campus, Reynolds Coliseum is the home for all of the Wolfpack gymnastics team s home meets. Over the years, the coliseum has become a great venue for women s gymnastics, helping the Wolfpack to an all-time home record of (.793). In 1997, NC State hosted the EAGL Championships in Reynolds, when the Pack s Stephanie Wall won the league title for the all-around. Last season, the Wolfpack set an EAGL record for attendance and ranked fifth nationally in attendance for home meets. Opened in 1949, the 12,400-seat coliseum is a multi-level facility that contains locker rooms, a training room and a recently expanded weight room, in addition to providing an arena to compete in. The coliseum also has classrooms, offices for academic support, marketing and sports information. Several other sports at NC State use the coliseum on a regular basis, including men s and women s basketball, wrestling and volleyball. It has also hosted civic events, concerts, commencement exercises and summer camps. PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENT Proper strength and conditioning is a key to success on the fields of play for all collegiate athletes, and at NC State each athlete is provided an opportunity to build themselves through the Wolfpack s outstanding physical improvement program. All the facilities needed by the gymnastics team are available in the recently expanded Reynolds Coliseum Weight Room Facility. Wright Wayne, the Pack s strength and conditioning advisor, is there to provide superior training and guidance to the entire squad. CASE DINING HALL Proper nutrition is essential to all Wolfpack athletes. The Case Dining Hall provides well-balanced and appetizing meals needed to maintain winning performances. NC State athletes enjoy the convenience and outstanding quality of the Case training table. The friendly Case Dining Hall staff does an outstanding job feeding over 500 athletes three meals a day. The dining hall is located on the bottom floor of the Case Athletic Center, which is convenient to all the dorms, Weisiger-Brown Facility, Reynolds Coliseum, Carmichael Gymnasium and classrooms. Each meal is designed to give the athlete a number of healthy options. There is a wide array of food selections including a buffet line, potato and pasta bar, cold sandwich buffet with a variety of breads and meats, and frozen yogurts and desserts. The meal schedule is molded around the class and practice schedules of the athletes, which allows them an extra advantage in budgeting their time. The daily menus are nutritional, varied and all-you-can-eat. For Wolfpack studentathletes, it all adds up to eating to win. NC STATE FACILITIES WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS

42 Student-Athlete Development WOLFPACK GYMNASTICS 2004 STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT 2003 EAGL ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM The NC State gymnastics team placed 13 members on the EAGL All- Academic team last season. The following are the NC State gymnasts to appear on the list: Gymnast GPA Major Kylah Bachman 3.25 First Year College Cara Dougherty 3.38 Business Management Beth Faulkner 3.33 Biological Sciences Mary Freyvogel 3.70 Biological Sciences Cori Goldstein 3.35 Biochemistry Marlyn Madey 3.63 Pol. Justice Aimee Panton 3.37 Counselor Education Molly Pennington 3.30 Industrial Engineering Alexis Pero 3.70 Psychology Stephanie Southard 3.71 Biological Engineering Adina Stock 3.07 Psychology As part of NC State s Office of Student-Athlete Development, the ImPACK Program is a great success story in the realm of student-athlete services. Under the direction of former Wolfpack football and NFL standout Lin Dawson, ImPACK gives Wolfpack student-athletes the opportunity to develop skills that will enhance opportunities for success after their athletic careers have ended. And in the process, it provides an outlet for the student-athletes to contribute to the community at large. The ImPACK Program has five major components: academic development, athletic development, personal development, community service and career development. The ImPACK program offers seminars to enhance student-athletes experiences during and after their college years. Those seminars cover such topics as alcohol and drug education, gambling, date rape, decisionmaking, media interviewing and personal finance. Each coach is given a Menu of Seminars and can select which ones they want their teams to attend. The seminars on gambling and drug and alcohol education are mandatory for all student-athletes. Other personal development workshops include men s and women s health issues, ropes course, communication skills and sexual responsibility. Seminars also are available for interested parents of student-athletes. A quarterly newsletter is sent to parents of student-athletes to keep them informed of current programs and activities. ImPACK s outreach program places special emphasis on touching the lives of Wake County s thousands of school age children. Each athletics team on campus is asked to participate in the Adopt-A-School program, in which NC State student-athletes provide tutoring, mentoring and other activities for children. This program seeks to avoid one-time events such as assemblies and focuses instead on building long-standing personal relationships between the school children and the student-athletes. Also, visits are made to children at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, the Duke Children s Hospital in Durham and UNC Hostpital in Chapel Hill. During the school year, Wolfpack student-athletes and staff reached about 22,000 people in the Raleigh/Research Triangle area through ImPACK s outreach efforts, including working with community programs such as Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, the North Carolina Food Bank and the Exxon/ACC Outreach Program. Another program that student-athletes are involved with is Pack Athletes Challenging Kids (P.A.C.K.). P.A.C.K. is the athletic department s speakers bureau, where student-athletes talk to children about current issues they are facing. The final phase of ImPACK s outreach program involves bringing children onto the NC State campus so they can interact with college students and experience campus life through athletics. This Inreach program is designed to show young students the advantages of getting an education and experiencing opportunities that exist outside of their neighborhood STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS 29 Personal and Career Development Seminars were conducted for student-athletes. These seminars ranged from drug and alcohol education, date rape, and decision-making to resume writing and job interviewing techniques. Additionally, 12 seminars were conducted for freshman football athletes during the year. The Annual Job Fair for student-athletes attracted over 30 companies, such as Coca-Cola, Northwestern Mutual Life, and Midway Airlines. These companies offered student-athletes part time jobs, internships, and postgraduate employment opportunities. The First Annual Career Night for Student-athletes provided 70 studentathletes (juniors and seniors) with the opportunity to network with 14 business professionals from various careers. The Corporate Playbook, featuring pictures and resumes of NC State student-athletes, trainers, and managers, was sent to over 1,500 companies. Several NCAA schools have followed NC State s innovative apporach in assisting their Student-athletes find meaningful employment after collegiate athletics. The Outreach Program, PACK Athletes Challenging Kids, reached 18,000+youth during presentations to over 119 civic organizations and schools. 178 student-athletes participated in the program. The ImPack Program distributed over 6,000 tickets to organizations that service underprivileged youth, schools, and other non-profit groups. This has helped dozens of organizations provide opportunites for young people who have never traveled outside of their towns or counties. All four of last year s graduating seniors, Cara Dougherty, Stephanie Southard, Adina Stock and Aimee Panton were all members of the 2003 EAGL All-Academic team. 40
