3 About Live Well. Be Well. Monroe County Health Department s Live Well. Be Well. program is led by a Health Educator, a Registered Nurse, and a Registered Dietitian. All of us want to live healthier but may be unsure where to start. The Live Well. Be Well. team is here to help you make healthier meal choices, be more physically active and understand common chronic illnesses that face our community every day. 5 Living with Diabetes From 1980 through 2014, the number of U.S. adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes has almost quadrupled (from 5.5 million to 21.9 million). (CDC, 2016) Join a diabetes support group with monthly presentations from a Registered Dietitian, Health Educator, or guest speaker to help manage the condition. There is always time at the end for questions and discussion. The group meets on the third Wednesday of every month (excluding July, August, and December). Location: Monroe Home Care Shoppe 474 N. 10 Physical Activity Walk and Talk On the third Wednesday of the month, take a walk with the Live Well. Be Well. staff and see the difference a little exercise can have on your blood sugar! If interested, your blood sugar will be taken before and after the walk. Be Well. staff on site; feel free to walk on your own and we ll see you in September! Car Seat Checks This FREE service is conducted by a Certified Car Seat Technician. Did you know? Child restraints are often used incorrectly. One study found that 72% of nearly 3,500 observed car seats and booster seats were misused in a way that could increase a child s risk of injury during a crash (NHTSA, 2006). Bring your car seat manual and your vehicle manual if you have them and learn proper installation techniques. Please allow 30 minutes per car seat. By appointment only. 10

11 Tips for Staying Safe in the Water this Summer! Swimming is a great recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, but it s important to know how to be safe while you re in the water. The American Red Cross offers these important swimming safety tips you should be aware of before you head out to the pool or beach: Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. Maintain constant supervision. Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Avoid distractions when supervising children around water. If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. Know how and when to call or the local emergency number. Protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15. Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you re not thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them. Always wear a life jacket! 11
