2 CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE, SAN BERNARDINO The BULLETIN December 14, FACULTY LEAVES ANNOUNCED Four faculty members have been granted sabbatical leaves for either all or part of the academic year. Jorun Johns, Assoc. Prof., German, will be on leave during all of the year for research on a biographical work of the noted 20th Century Austrian poet, Hugo Von Hofmannsthal. in the Spring Quarter she plans to go to Vienna to complete the project. Dennis ikenberry. Assoc. Prof., Physics, who will be on sabbatical leave in the Winter and Spring Quarters of 1975, will spend the first three months at State University, New York, at Albany, working on a project with a team headed by prof. T, P. Das, The following three months will be spent in Rumania on a research project jointly sponsored by the NSF and the Rumanian government. The two programs are related to the study of electron nuclear inter actions in semiconductors, Michael Persell, Assoc. Prof,, History, has been granted sabbatical leave during the Fall and Winter of to do research on French Colonial history for a book concerning French expansion in Africa prior to World War I. Leslie Van Marter, Prof., Philosophy, will be on leave during the Fall, 1974,Quarter to do a book-length study of the philosophy of art and the practice of criticisms on "The Powers and Limitations of Aesethic Theories." TRUSTEES INCREASE STUDENT At its November meeting, the Board of MATERIALS & SERVICE FEES, Trustees of the CSUC increased the Materials and Service fee for the EFFECTIVE FALL, 1974 TERM fiscal year,effective with the Fall, 1974 Term. The following fees will apply to all campuses except Cal State, Stanislaus: 12.0 or more units 8-0 to 11.9 units 4,0 to 7.9 units 0 to 3.9 units Quarter $ Semester $ S1 il^ i

3 FACULTY PROFESSlONAL This year, the first allocations of Fac- DEVELOPMENT AWARDS MADE ulty Professional Development Funds were made by the Faculty Affairs Committee, from approximately $1,900 originating from the President's Club. a Eleven faculty members received approximately $175 for 10 pro- :fl jects: 9 Robert Smith - writing a book "The Social History of Illinois Coal Mining;" William " Slout - completing the last two volumes of a six- volume series of source books on the American Theatre; Joe Bas & Jiwiith Rymer - completing a critical, annotated edition of a 17th Century Spanish drama, accepted for publication; John Craig - developing a new method for the synthesis of certain organic compounds; Brij B. 4 CHRISTMAS & NEW YEARS HOLIDAYS COMING Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25, is an Administrative Holiday for the College. New Year's Day, Tuesday,is also an Administrative Holiday, All facilities of the college will be closed both days. LAST "BULLETIN" OF THE YEAR DATELINES This issue of the College Bulletin will be the last in The next issue will be published January 4, Today is the End of the Fall Term and the last day of ' finals, Grades from faculty are due in the Records Office on Monday, December 17 at 9 a.m. 4* Registration for the winter Term will be held in the Gym on Thursday, January 3 and Friday, January 4, beginning at 9 a.m. each day and.ending at 6:30 p.m. Evening students are assigned priority numbers throughout both days and are urged to appear during their daytime priority rather than darling the 4:30-6:30 p.m. slot of their priority day. As a convenience to students, the Accounting Office will remain open Monday through Friday, January 7-11, until 7 p.m. BBC FIIM WITH KHOKHLOV SEGMENT TO BE AIEtED IN FEB. Nikolai Khokhlov, Assoc. Prof., Psychology, is featured in a segment of a BBC film on the KGB, USSR secret service and police organization, in scenes on campus and at home. Photographed on campus by BBC last June, the film will be aired in February 7 in Britain, where it has received nation-wide publicity in the Radio Timest largest publication in Britain. In the cover story, vjhich quotes Dr. Khokhlov in an interview, photographs of Dr. IChokhlov in class, in labs and v^ith students, taken by former life.magazine photographer Peter Shapiro, are used as illustration. BBC films are often syndicated in the U.S. and this may appear on Educational TV channels, DOMINIC BULGARELLA EARNS PH.D. AT MSU Dominic Bulgarella received word from Michigan State University that, effective Nov. 30, he had completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree in sociology. The degree will be officially conferred March, Dr. Bulgarella's dissertation was entitled "The Effects of Severity on the Socialization of Recruits in the U.S. Marine Corps." FERSONALb The college extends best wishes to Lupe Andrade (Library) and Sullivan, son of the late Jack Sullivan and Mrs. Sullivan (Soc,),on the occasion of their wedding tomorrow in Riverside. Corinne Schnur (Fac. Senate) is home following hospitalization at Kaiser Hospital. ^e will return to work in approximately a month.

5 PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION At the 72nd Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Assoc., held in New Orleans Nov Dec. 2, Frances Berdan (Anthro.) read a paper entitled "The Orgemization of Tribute in the Aztec Empire." Also attending and reading a paper entitled "Aboriginal Ethnicity in an Australian City" was James C. Pierson (Anthro.) On Tues., Dec. 11, Gregory L. Price (Phy. Ed, & Rec.) was guest lecturer at Grafton Hills College, speaking on recreation in the future. A^hur Nelson (Library) has been appointed to serve on the Steering Committee for the Council of Ubrary Directors of the California State University and Colleges for the coming year.
