Famous Hypnotist Polga r to Present Show in Pullen on October 23 at 8 p.m. No greater confidence in his own ability could be demonstrated than recent offer by Dr. Franz Polgar to an audience at Detroit Town Hall Forum. Hide my check for giving this performance, Dr. Polgar told startled garing. Go ahead hide it. I ll go outside and anyone who wishes may accompany me. If I can t find check when I come back, you can keep it and tonight is all for fun. They hid check under hat of a woman seated in center of vast throng in hall. Polgar c3 simply asked for a volunteer known to audience to give him mental directions. Then he hurried down aisle, arrived at woman and her hat never having seen eir before in his life and produced check. It took him about four minutes to complete job of locating one woman in 2,000 to find his pay for evening. Dr. Polgar will present a twohour show at Pullen Hall on Friday Oct. 23 at 8:00 p.m., under sponsorship of College Union Theater Committee. Polgar s Miracles of Mind have been a treat to all kinds of audiences throughout world students, professors, adults and children alike. Without doubt, this is one of greatest of all audience participation shows. Usually Polgar s program is divided into three major parts: telepathy, memory feats and hyp- nosis latter being most important part,of show. It is during this portion that Polgar uses volunteers to demonstrate some basic facts on subject of hypnosis. His feats of memory are no less astounding. No person is born with an exceptional memory; most people are just too lazy to exercise ir memory powers, says Polgar. Ladies spend hours Jar mm was man» on end at hairdresser s; people enjoy all forms of physical culture, development of body, just as well. Why not, Polgar argues, devote some time to developing our mental powers. Polgar can meet a hundred people all at once and know and remember and associate all names with ir respective owners reafter. Discipline and training, he ll tell you, made difference between remembering and not remembering. At a recent convention, he memorized names of over 200 people toger with all ir room numbers. Just tell me your. name and I ll tell you your room number or or way around, if you will. He made good his challenge innumerable times. Then someone called out Room 128. Polgar actually seemed stumped. He frankly admitted that he did- not know. The questioner, hotel s manager, filled hall with laughter as he replied: Well, sir, it s your room number. Polgar is not always correct, and he ll be first to tell you so. But he has proven always able to entertain. He s a great showman and has a stage presence worthy of some of our best performers. Students will be admitted by registration cards. Dates will be admitted free. Faculty and staff membership cards will be honored. Orwise admission will be $1.50 per person. 4 j 'T. THE TECHNICIAN The High Cost of It appears that two items are required of anyone wishing to buy Dixie Classic tickets in a desirable section of Coliseum. The first item, as might be expected, is nine dollars. The second is evidence of membership in Wolfpack Club. Several instances have been reported to Technician of persons trying to buy tickets to Classic and being told to come back later, presumably after all Wolfpack Club members had taken ir pick of best seats. Eir that or leave ir money and receive tickets later for unspecified seats. Just why members of this private club should receive special consideration at a state function being held in a state building we do not know. True Wolfpack Club gives large amounts of money, donated, by its members, to various campus funds used to promote athletics. But every tax paying citizen of North Carolina, wher "Classic Tickets a member of Club or not also helps support State College and its athletic teams. Since each pays his proportionate share of taxes y should receive equalrtreatment at box office. A mass exodus from ranks of Club would probably result if this preferential treatment were discontinued which would clear up one point that has been worrying us, to wit are se generous persons interested in promoting athletics or are y simply concerned with getting good seats to ir favorite sports events. We thin k a man interested enough in Classic to try to get a ticket at this early date should have one, best which has not already been sold to someone else. If existing arrangement between Coliseum management and Wolfpack Club prevents this n arrangement ought to be abolished. 5 _ Dr: MurraySpeaks In Chicago, Ill. Dr. Raymond L. Murray, atomic scientist and professor of nuclear engineering in he School of Engineering at North Carolina State College, delivered a talk 'on de- sign of nuclear power reactors at a reactor information meeting sponsored by Atomic Energy Commission at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, 111., last week. Heterogeneous Reactor Calculations was subject of Dr. Murray s talk. He was one of 75' speakers, all of whom were top atomic, authorities. Union Presents Comedy Sunday This is a facsimile of a Broadway comedy about two Brooklyn spinisters who make a hobby of dosing old men with arsenic. Raymond. Massey and Peter Lorre present two interesting figures in movie as murder is made an innocently delightful subject. Cary Grant plays part of a rambunctious, womanhating New York critic. The original Broadway play 'has been expanded upon very little ex- 'cept to interject even more humor into an already hilarious plot. The dear old ladies nephews namely John Alexander, Massey, and Grant strain to convulse audi nce_ th laughter while Josephine Hull and Jean Adair, two old ladies, carry out ir ghostly plan. An enjoyable evening of,mirth and merriment is promised all who attend this movie Sunday evening, at 8: 15, in Textile Auditorium. Please co-operate with us by refraining from smoking in auditorium. The overall purpose of meeting, Dr. Murray said, is to review power reactor plans now in existence and pass on such information to individuals vitally concerned with this phase of nuclear energy." Approximately 500 representatives were present from nation s atmnic energy installations, industries interested in commercial use of atomic energy, and companies building submarine and aircraft reactors for government. AEC laboratories at Brookhaven, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge were among those sending delegates. Dr. Murray, who has served as a consultant on reactor design to Monsanto Chemical Company and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, says that his talk grew out of work with two ' or nuclear scientists. He has worked with Dr. A. C. Menius, J r., also a professor of nuclear engineering at State College, on design of a power reactor for Mpnsanto Chemical Company. Dr. Murray also attributes a source of his information to a 1953 master s sis by Maj. Ivan C. Atkinson, a former State College student who is now associated with nuclear aircraft development in U. S. Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. ran TECHNICIAN Infirmary Reports Prolessor Stevenson Colds Prevalent Illness The number of students report-representing to College Infirmary for A.I.E.E. treatment of colds so far this fall has been about same as in past years. 7 ,. Oct. 16, 1953 Plan For Witll granting of a Construction Permit for North Carolina s first. non-commercial television station by Federal Communications Commission, State College, The Woman s College, and University at Chapel Hill have launched a vast new enterprise in educational service to people of North Carolina WUNC-TV, Channel 4. Television from Consolidated University will not take air until fall of 1954, but already three institutions are beginning to ready mselves for what many believe to be most significant development in education since invention of printing press. More than a million dollars has been donated to provide requisite equipment and operational funds for WUNC-TV. The foresightedness and farsightedness of some of North Carolina s leading citizens and business organizations have made this significant educational service possible. Through efforts of our three faculties, we shall be able to take education to people of North Carolina in a way which has never before been possible, said Gordon Gray, President of Consolidated University. Our first debt of gratitude is owed to Jefferson Standard Foundation which made possible all of our early conferences and experiments in television and now is contributing to equipment and operational fund; our second debt is to or North Carolina broadcasters who counselled with us and. encouraged us to build a television station; and finally, we are indebted to those generous citizens and organizations who are making construction of WUNC-TV and its first two years of.telecasting, particularly The Burlington Mills Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. John Motley Morehead and The Fund for Adult Education. Donors to project are: The Burlington Mills Foundation, which is giving $200,000; Mr. and Mrs. John Motley Morehead, $200,000; The Fund for Adult Education (established by Ford Foundation), $100,000; and The Abel Caleb Lineberger Memorial Fund, Jefierson Standard Foundation, Mrs. Nathalie L. Shuford Foundation, The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. H. Smith Richardson, Wachovia Bank and Trust Campany, The Carolina Steel and Iron Company, each of whom is giving a substantial contribution. The University s move into educational television was made only after considerable study. Last June, TV Channel Granted Greater U. shortly after Federal Communications Commission made educational channels available, 150 deans and directors of three faculties met in Chapel Hill for a 2-day conference. To give present picture of television, a group of experts including chairman of Federal Communications Commission and President of American Council on Education was called in to address conference and to serve as consultants for smaller groups. The conference concluded that television presented a challenge and an opportunity; that it was desirable for University to own and operate a station; and that re was an excellenuvail ability of (program) resources in University. Recommendation was made that an All-University Advisory Council be appointed to make a detailed study and specific recommendations. This was made. Under direction of TV Council, as it came to be known, a series of experimental television programs was undertaken and a 92-page study prepared. On basis of this study, conferences with North Carolina broadcasters, consultation with presidents of national networks, and advice of Governor Umstead s Commission on Educational Television, present plan of action was adopted. Facilities will include complete studios on State College campus, The Woman s College Campus, and at University in Chapel Hill. In addition, a mobile unit will produce on--spot telecasts from experimental farms, legislative halls, sports fields, special events spots, and or educational resource areas of State. The originating units will beam programs 'by microwave relay to a 100-kw transmitter (maximum permissible power) located near Pittsboro, very close to geographical center of State. The antenna will be mounted on a 1,000-foot tower, highest manmade structure in State. It is anticipated that a good picture will be receivable over a radius of about a hundred miles from this transmitter tower. Since channel allocated to University is Channel 4, VHF, WUNC-TV programs can be received on all television sets presently in use, without expense of adding a converter. Approximately 2,250,000 people live in area which engineers believe will be effectively covered by WUNC-TV. To insure reception of WUNC-TV programs in areas not reached by station itself, University will have kinescope recording (recording on film) facilities and a complete film-processing laboratory. Commercial television stations will be free to carry se filmed programs all over state. A motorist is a person who, after seeing a wreck, drives carefully for several blocks.
