3 Living on campus UW-Platteville residence hall staff believe all residents have the right to be treated with respect. Our residence halls are a place for everyone. The use of hateful language or actions, discrimination, or unequal treatment will not be accepted or tolerated. What about the internet Students may sign up as soon as they get their personal computers set up in their rooms. Upon plugging their computer into the data port in their room with a working Ethernet cable and bringing up their preferred internet browser, the student is prompted by our NetReg system for their name, password, and information about their computer. If the page does not come up automatically, students can visit More information is obtained by visiting or calling the ITS Help Desk at Insurance information Situations may occur when belongings including rental textbooks, clothes, bikes, computers, etc. disappear (stolen, misplaced) or become damaged. Health in the residence halls Students who live in Wisconsin residence halls will complete a form by check-in indicating the dates they received immunizations for Meningitis and Hepatitis B OR that they have been provided the information but do not choose to have immunizations. 4 You and your roommates Learning to get along with someone you hardly know may be one of your biggest challenges in college. Begin by establishing a pattern of open communication and cooperation with your roommate. Take time to share your reactions to some of the following sentence leads. This activity will help the two of you pinpoint areas for negotiation: The background I come from is... Where do you study? What I miss most and least about home is... What noise can you tolerate while studying? I came to UW-Platteville because... I think drinking is... This year, I m most looking forward to... I think drug use is... This year, I am worried about... Some things I feel strongly about are... I like to spend money on... For me, making friends is... I like to sleep at these times... Something that is likely to annoy me is... I need approximately hours of sleep each night. You can use these belongings of mine When do you get up in the morning? These items of mine are off limits... When do you go to sleep at night? Are we going to share food? Do you fall asleep with music or the fan on? How will we handle weekend guests? The grades I hope to earn this semester are... Do you have a significant other? My typical approach to studying is... When will that significant other be allowed to visit? These discussion topics may seem trivial, but many roommates split over such issues. Please take the time to discuss these items with your roommate soon after you meet. Do not assume that your roommate knows your living style, even if you are already friends. If you have concerns about your roommate s Facebook page, it doesn t mean you won t be able to live as roommates. **NOTE: Resident assistants are a great resource for community building. Don t hesitate to ask for help if roommate issues arise.
5 Parking permits Parking permits can be purchased through University Police. Information on how to purchase permits can be found at Remember: permit enforcement in all parking lots and streets will be enforced upon your arrival to campus. It will not be an acceptable defense for a parking ticket if you haven t yet received your permit in the mail. Bike lockers If you sent in a bike locker reservation online, you may pick up your key at the front desk of your residence hall during desk hours. The cost is $30 per semester, $40 for Rountree Commons. Bikes cannot be stored in the residence halls. Mopeds and motorcycles will not fit in the bike lockers. Don t forget to register your bike with University Police in Brigham Hall and receive a free bike license.
6 Other information Rental loft distribution Cost is $96 or $111 with shelf, plus tax. Students in Pickard, Brockert, Hugunin, or Morrow halls rent lofts online at Students in the remaining halls rent loft kits from the residence life website: Please bring a receipt of purchase to the loft distribution site. Black metal lofts from bedloft.com are distributed from the basement of Morrow Hall in the loft storage room. Wooden loft kits are distributed from the residence hall staff in hall. Students should the loft coordinator at to set up a time to pick up your loft. emai: lofts-l@uwplatt.edu An adjustable wrench is needed to remove the headboard or footboard from the bedframe. Bring your own if possible. WOODEN frame futons do not fit under the high lofts in Bridgeway Commons, Rountree Commons, Dobson, McGregor, Melcher, Porter, Southwest, or Wilgus halls. Residents will receive information at check-in regarding the high loft conversion rental kit available through Residence Life that fits their bed style. No residents are allowed to build/bring their own lofts. Meal plan Freshman and sophomore students living in residence halls must select a meal plan. The meal plan is activated once your contract is received. A Pioneer Passport is needed at all Dining Services locations. Your passport has a magnetic strip processed through a computer to pay for your transactions. Where do I go if I have problems with my meal plan? The Meal Access Office is located in the Markee Pioneer Student Center. mao@uwplatt.edu or call What if I have misplaced or lost my Pioneer Passport? The Pioneer Passport office, located on the second floor of the Markee Pioneer Student Center, can make a new card and deactivate the missing card. The cost for replacing your ID is $20. Call with questions. Telephone service Local phone service is not provided as part of the residence hall room rent. Students may use their own cell phone, TracFone, or contract their own local service. Hall activity fee Each hall collects $15 per resident for an activity fee at the time of check-in to fund activities and desk services. This fee is required to check out most of the items from the front desk. Room reservations for fall Each spring, current residence hall students have the opportunity to reserve a space for the fall. Scheduled dates begin in February. Detailed instructions for the reservation process will be available on the Residence Life website after semester break. Students must submit their e-contract and a $150 prepayment by credit card or check to make a reservation. ATTENTION: The residency requirement that freshmen and sophomores are required to live in a community environment will be enforced for spring 2018 and beyond. Be a resident assistant Residence Life is seeking students for the school year who would like to serve their fellow students. The resident assistant position is a great opportunity to meet new people, serve as a role model and mentor, and gain valuable experience for future jobs. Also, RAs receive a single room and a meal plan as well as a stipend of $800 per year. The minimum qualifications for this position are: Must be in good disciplinary standing within the residence hall system Must have successfully completed 30 college credits (at any college) by the time the RA duties will be assumed Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 to be considered for hire Must have lived in a residence hall (at any college) for a minimum of one semester before start date Do you think you have a reason for an exception to any of the above qualifications? 7 Room arrangement Only the bed ends (headboard and footboard) and bed frame may be removed from the room, but the resident is responsible for storing them elsewhere as there is no storage available within the residence halls. The resident is responsible for returning these items during room changes and checkout and for any damage that occurs to the furnishings. Other university furnishings may not be removed from the room. Residents are able to arrange their room while staying within the guidelines provided. All furniture is movable. Refer to your Student Handbook online on arrival if you have questions. Residence Life does not have exact room or furniture sizes nor the staff available to measure each individual room. Please do not call to ask. What is my mailing address Each student receives a mailbox located in the lobby of the residence hall in which they reside. The mailbox is shared with their roommate. The student s room key is used to access the mailbox which is labeled by room number. Mail, along with campus mail, is sent to this mailbox and must be checked daily by one of the roommates. If a student receives a package too large for the mailbox, the student is ed to pick up the package during posted desk hours.
