February 23, 2018 DIRECTOR S CORNER-Julie Kildee Snow Days We have received a number of inquiries regarding the number of snow days that a district in Michigan is allowed to call before they are required to start making them up. In Michigan, school districts are allowed to have 6 of their required 180 school days forgiven for inclement weather. Once they are over 6 days, the district must add days at the end of the school year to meet the state-mandated 180 days. This year, unfortunately, we are already at 7 days due to the intense winter weather. The good news is that there is a waiver through the State of Michigan that allows districts to apply for additional days once you exceed your state-allowed 6 days. This year, many districts all over the state are in the same position due to the severe winter weather. The state waiver is not guaranteed, but districts all over Genesee and Oakland Counties have used this waiver successfully in the past few years (including HA). We have already applied for a waiver from the State and are awaiting a response. These waivers can come in three day increments and that is what we have applied for - since we still have several weeks of winter we want to err on the side of safety. Our hope is that we will not have to make up any additional days in June, and we will certainly be communicating with all of you as soon as we have further information. Exciting Coffee & Conversation! We are planning a "first" for our next Coffee & Conversation session! On March 7th at 8:00am in the media center a select group of middle school students will present on our Holly Academy Middle School experience from a student's perspective. These students have worked all year in our "student focus group" and are anxious to share the benefits of remaining at Holly Academy through middle school. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 7th! It's good to be a Husky! Holly Academy receives grant for School Drinking Water Program Our thanks to Jose Melero for submitting the grant! This award was received from the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, and the school will receive six (6) Elkay Combo Fillers and Fountain drinking water units. This project was established with the goal of developing positive healthy drinking water habits while educating young people on eco-friendly methods to reduce environmental waste and reuse water containers. Congratulations to Mr. Melero and Holly Academy! "Boots and Bling" Daddy Daughter Dance, March 10, 2018 Volunteers are needed. Wellness Night On March 27th, Parent University in conjunction with our Wellness Committee will cohost Holly Academy s Wellness Night (6:00 pm) Health-based activities will be offered as well as concurrent sessions on puberty for our 4th - 8th grade students. The puberty sessions will be held in Mrs. Vana's classroom (boys) and Mrs. Maly's classroom (girls) from 6:15pm-7:00pm (grades 4-5) and 7:15pm- 8:00pm (grades 6-8). The goal of this evening is to offer classes for our young ladies and gentlemen on the verge of entering puberty, as well as for those who have already entered this important, yet confusing time. Mr. Tyler Spooner will present to the boys and Dr. Jennifer DeAnna will present to the girls.
