In an inclusive learning environment, we prepare graduates for their colleges of choice and empower students through the setting and reaching of academic and personal goals. School and Community Millennium Brooklyn High School was founded in 2011 as a result of the communicated need for more high school seats for students seeking an accelerated education in Brooklyn. We graduated our founding class in June MBHS provides a rigorous liberal arts academic program. We have a culturally, economically, and racially diverse student body, as well as a large number of students who are first generation Americans and will be the first generation to attend college. The student body is approximately 57% female and 43% male, 30% Caucasian, 27% Hispanic, 25% African-American, 10% Asian and 8% Other. Approximately 46% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. MBHS involvement with the Nest program is a unique aspect of our school. The ASD NEST Program was created in collaboration with NYU for higher functioning students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Approximately 5% of our students participate in the nest program. We were one of two schools in New York City piloting this program at the high school level. There are currently thirteen high schools with a nest program in New York City. Another program of note here at MBHS is our program. Through this required course sequence over four years, students engage in long-term project-based investigations that support the development of quantitative and qualitative research methods and writing skills. Students create their own research questions, and use qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to collect and analyze data and present an exhibition to share their reflective process during a school-wide Symposium each spring. Academics The academic calendar year includes two semesters of approximately 20 weeks. All students take a college preparatory program. Students sit for the New York State Regents Exams, and the school offers 11 AP courses. Due to scheduling constraints, we currently allow students to take a maximum of 3 AP courses per year, with select exceptions. The MBHS course sequence can be seen in full below and includes a two-year Humanities course sequence. Over the last two years, MBHS has added two new academic programs. Through a collaboration with Engineering the Future and the Boston Museum of Science, MBHS is able to offer Introduction to Engineering Design. AP Computer Science is another new course offered through collaboration with the Beauty and Joy of Computing Initiative. Students are also encouraged to apply for and participate in college-level courses offered through College Now at Brooklyn College and through the College Experience Program at St. Joseph s College. Advisory, Leadership and Community Service MBHS students meet three times each week in an Advisory class (consisting of students) with a curriculum designed to promote leadership development, community building and college readiness skills. Groups remain together with the same advisor from the beginning of 9 th grade through graduation. Advisory credit is earned as students complete 20 hours annually of community service and participate in group service learning and other projects. MBHS students also participate in after-school clubs and Public School Athletic League (PSAL) sports. Some of these include: Birding Club, Black Student Union, Broadcast Journalism, Chess Club, Creative Writing, Dance Club, Film Club, Gay Straight Alliance, Music Club, Photography Club, National Honor Society, Writing Center and Yearbook. Many extracurricular activities are student-led and driven. Our current PSAL teams, joint teams with Millennium High School in Manhattan are: baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls fencing, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls table tennis, girls softball, girls volleyball, coed stunt and girls swimming. Grading System Grades are based on a numerical system and range from AP courses are not weighted. Students who have an 85

2 Number of Students in all classes achieve a place on the honor roll, and students with a 90 average or higher in all classes are considered high honors students. MBHS grades are annualized. MBHS does not rank its students.
