1 N e w s l e t t e r Wednesday, May 9, 2012 Timberline Secondary School, Campbell River B.C. Principal: Kevin Harrison, Vice Principal: Kim Padington Phone: Fax: Web Site: timberline@sd72.bc.ca Principal s Message As we prepare for the end of the school year, you can be sure that the remainder of the year will be very busy, with many year-end activities taking place. June exams are just around the corner (June 19-25) and our Grade 12 s are starting to anticipate graduation night on June 27th. While we applaud the accomplishments of all Timberline students, we are extremely proud of our Grade 12 s and we will truly miss them as they move on to the next phase of their lives. They tell us daily of university acceptance letters, summer jobs and of successful scholarship and bursary applications. This year s graduating class is continuing with the tradition of reducing Dry Grad prizes and contributing leftover money to their grad legacy fund which is designed to help others. This is a very noble gesture on their part. In the coming weeks, we will be honouring staff members who have decided to retire after many years of dedicated service to Timberline and School District #72. Mr. Stevenson, Mrs. Lihou, and Mr. Lihou, will be leaving us at the end of this school year. It is with mixed emotions that we celebrate their retirements knowing we will miss their wisdom, leadership and collegiality. Legally Blonde, the musical, was a huge sell out success, and created excellent memories for the students as well as for Mr. Lihou, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Nelson and Danette Bell who were all critical to its success. The Timberline Band Students, under the direction of Mr. Johnson, put in some stellar performances last week to win a silver medal at the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival and then to win a gold medal at MusicFest Canada competing in the West Coast Jazz Festival. Well done all! I know we will have many more successes to share with each other before the end of June. If you do not know the user name/ password, please call the school and we will provide it. Once you have access, you may change your password. Parking/Pick Up Please note that the official drop off point for students is at the lower entrance turn-around by the gym. The public transit uses the upper turn-around by the main office for dropping off bus students and adult learners to the college. Please do not use the main entrance by the office for dropping off or picking up students. When picking up students, please park in designated parking spaces. Parking in the driving lanes makes it difficult for other drivers to find a parking spot and prevents those already parked to leave the area. Also, to prevent those harmful effects of greenhouse gases, please turn off your engine while waiting. Let s make our school grounds safe for all! Student Messages We do not have a paging system in our school, due to the fact that we share our facility with North Island College. This makes it very difficult to get messages to students. If you need to contact your child in an emergency only, please feel free to call the office. Excused Absences The parent call-in line for student absences is Please call this number and leave a message when your child will be missing school. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Students from overseas will be coming to our schools and they d love to stay with a family. We will have many high-school aged students coming to Campbell River from all over the world and staying for 2-10 months. At this point we know that there will be students from Germany, China, Taiwan, and possibly Mexico and Brazil. Many students would prefer to stay in families with children, especially students their own age. We encourage all families, with or without children, to get involved. We provide training and lots of support! Families are compensated for their expenses and are expected to provide: a warm and welcoming home environment a private bedroom internet access three healthy meals per day, plus snacks If you are interested, please see Ms. Kobelak in the counseling office for more info
4 GRAD June 27, On June 27th, at Strathcona Gardens, there will be two separate events: 1. The school ceremony. 5 p.m. start 2. Dry Grad party School Ceremony Fees for the grad ceremony will be collected during the week of May All grads participating in the ceremony are required to pay the $ fee which includes the cost of the yearbook and 4 guest tickets. Extra tickets may be purchased at $15.00 each. Tickets may be purchased on line, however you must still pick up the tickets at school. Pages/default.aspx Under Quick Links, click: Eventz Landing Payment and Transcript Ordering Online Before graduation fees and DVD fees will be accepted, students must ensure all overdue textbooks/library books are returned or paid for and outstanding school fees have been paid. Students will also be asked to pay for overdue textbooks and library books from their middle schools. Report cards will indicate if there are any outstanding textbook fees owed. Students must have also completed their graduation transitions and ceremony write up. The ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm with the doors opening at 3:45 pm. Unfortunately, we cannot accept reserved seating with the exception of wheel chair guests and families. Any families requiring wheel chair seating are asked to call Ms. Padington at An area of seating will be reserved for the person requiring a wheel chair and their accompanying family members. The ceremony will last for approximately 1 1/2 hours and is followed by a catered reception of appetizers and beverages. All guests are invited to remain after the ceremony and visit. At about 8:30 p.m., students and their approved guests will go through a security check as they enter the area for Dry Grad. Graduation is an important occasion providing the opportunity to recognize and to honour each student. It is an exciting and serious celebration, perhaps the most significant event in a student s school career. As graduation is a school event, the school s code of conduct is in effect, and grads are reminded that any grad suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave the premises and will not participate in the ceremony. PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL CEREMONY Any grads who have been removed from the grad list for the above reasons, will not be allowed to pay fees and receive tickets. May 31 is adjudication date, at which time the administrators and counsellors will determine which students are permanently removed from the 2012 grad list. Students who do not have credit for the appropriate courses will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony. Students who do not graduate may still participate in the Dry grad celebration. Any grads who do not plan to participate in the Graduation Ceremony, for any reason, are asked to inform their counsellor as soon.
