1 WEEK OF DECEMBER 5, 2016 A Message from your Dean of Students We are at a time of year when stress or anxiety can be at an ultimate high with finals, final homework projects, and other life issues. At Normandale, we have a very talented and caring team of professional staff members that are here to support you. Our counselors (Francis Bland, Paul Harlos, Valerie Dean, and Kristen Cooper) are available to help you with

2 test anxiety, time management, and work/life/school balance and other personal concerns that you may be experiencing. Appointments can be made with our counselors in the Nath Advising Center or by calling Our Director of Mental Health and Wellness (Dr. Amy Wagener, LP) is available to assist you if you suspect you have, or have been diagnosed, with a mental health concern. Please stop by C1110 or call to make an appointment. We also have our Academic Advisors available to help you register for spring semester if you need assistance. Lynn Perkins Dean of Students THIS WEEK'S EVENTS Monday, December 5 11am - 1pm: Cocoa and Cram Studying for finals and needing a warm drink to help you concentrate? Stop by the Fireside Room (K1450) from 11am-1pm and the Tutoring Center from 11:45am-1pm to warm up with some hot chocolate, take a quick break from studying, and have some space to keep working towards the finish line! 3-4 pm: Pen Pal Mentor Training (P0808A) Phi Theta Kappa's Honors in Action team has partnered with Amicus to establish a pen-pal mentoring program that will give Normandale students the opportunity to mentor currently incarcerated individuals. A one year time commitment is required. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. All applicants must pass an interview with Amicus staff as well as a background check and attend the mandatory training on December 5. Applicants do not need to have finished their application before attending training. All letters will be sent to Amicus's office and then forwarded to the students/inmates to protect the privacy of students. Students will only be paired with inmates of their same sex. There is the option to transition from pen-pal mentoring to in-person mentoring but this is not required. Friday, December 9 11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Creative Writing Club Party (S2325) Please join us for the release of the student literary magazine, The Paper Lantern, on Friday, December 9th, from 11:30-12:30 in room S Our party will feature readings from students published in the magazine, an open mic, and free snacks. All are welcome! 7:30 pm: Holiday Concert Series - Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble Come hear the beautiful and melodic voices of the season with the Normandale Music Department presenting our talented Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble. The concert will take place at Christ the King Lutheran Church at 8600 Fremont Ave. S. right here in Bloomington. CLUB MEETINGS AND INFORMATION LGBTQIA Student Club Are you interested in meeting other LGBTQIA students on campus? Are you looking for opportunities to do student activism and raise awareness about LGBTQIA issues on campus? Then consider starting a student club! Are you interested in creating awareness about mental health on campus? Interested in breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues? Please join us as we start a new student group on campus, Active Minds, to promote mental health and wellbeing. MetroTransit Spring 2017 College Bus Passes MetroTransit Spring 2017 College Bus Passes are now on sale for $105. You can purchase bus passes at the Kopp Student Center Information Desk. Bring your Normandale Student ID and a copy of your Spring 2017 class schedule. The bus pass is good from January 1 - May 31, Lion's Roar Student Voice - Open Position Lions' Roar Student Voice is looking for an additional staff member. Duties include contributing to each month's publication by writing articles, photography, and edition layout. You must be eligible for Work-Study and be willing to put in 5-8 hours a week. For more information, contact Jeannette Sanchez at "Stand By Me" Warm Layers Drive We will be sorting the "Stand By Me" warm layers donations on Thursday, December 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Zone (by the Kopp Student Center info desk). If you are interested in volunteering for that, please come by! We will be hosting training for volunteers that would like to distribute the bags later that day (Thursday, December 8) at 1 p.m. in room C2013. This training is mandatory for any volunteers that will be passing out donations. It will last no longer than an hour.
