1 For Immediate Release // Wednesday, January, 20, 2016 Contact // Liz Beadle #PAC12GYM CONFERENCE COMPETITION TO HEAT UP THIS WEEKEND As Pac-12 Conference competition heats up this weekend, the Conference sits at 17-5 vs. other conferences. Some of the Pac-12 s marquee wins have come against No. Alabama, No. 10 Georgia, and No. 2 Southern Utah. All five of the conference s losses have come at the hands of teams currently ranked in the top 25 nationally. This weekend will feature two Conference top-25 match-ups as well as two Pac-12 squads heading on the road to face non-conference top-15 teams. In the national rankings, the Pac-12 is leading the way in two of four events with UCLA ranked first nationally on the floor and UTAH ranked first nationally on the bars. Green...jgreen8@uw.edu PAC Liz Beadle... lbeadle@pac-12.org UTAH VOTED PRESEASON FAVORITE IN PAC-12 COACHES POLL SAN FRANCISCO In a poll taken by the Conference s eight women s gymnastics, UTAH was voted the preseason favorite to win the 2016 Pac-12 regular season, the Conference announced today. Utah received 9 points and six first-place votes. The Utes were also voted fourth in the national preseason coaches poll where they received 1 first-place votes. Utah holds the top spot in the preseason Pac-12 coaches poll for the second year in a row after UCLA had dominated the No. 1 spot for three years before that. This season, Utah will be looking to capture its third Pac-12 championship in a row, following their back-to-back championship seasons in 201 and UCLA came in second in the Pac-12 poll, tallying 1 points. Additionally, the Bruins are ranked sixth in the national preseason coaches poll. STANFORD sits in third place in the Pac-12 with Pac-12 Women s points in the poll, and received one first-place vote. The Gymnastics Poll Cardinal are one of three Pac-12 squads ranked in the national top ten, coming in at No. 8. OREGON STATE came in fourth place in the Pac-12 coaches poll with 30 points. Rounding out the poll were CALIFORNIA, ARIZONA, WASHINGTON, and ARIZONA STATE with 2, 21, 13, and 7 points respectively. 1. Utah (6) UCLA Stanford (1) Oregon Sate California Arizona Washington Arizona State... 7 Six of eight Pac-12 teams are ranked in the top 25 nationally heading into the 2016 season. No. 12 Oregon State and No. 1 California join Utah, UCLA, and Stanford in the top 15. Arizona, Washington, and Arizona State are ranked 18th, 30th, and 36th respectively. The 2016 season is set to begin on Friday, Jan. 8. Pac-12 gymnastics will be featured on Pac- 12 Networks throughout the season, including the 2016 Pac-12 Championship to take place on March 19, 2016 in Seattle. 3 WOMEN S GYMNASTICS ON PAC-12 NETWORKS Pac-12 Networks will begin its fourth season of women s gymnastics coverage starting on Friday, January 8 at 5 p.m. with Michigan State at Arizona. Pac-12 Networks will air 26 women s gymnastics meets, five more than last season. Each Pac-12 program will appear on the Networks at least four times: Arizona (6), Arizona State (5), California (5), Oregon State (7), Stanford (), UCLA (10), Utah (9) and Washington (5). In addition to Michigan State, five other non-conference opponents will be shown on the Networks: Brigham Young at Utah (Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.); Alabama at UCLA (Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.); Auburn at Oregon State (Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.); Georgia at UCLA (Mar. 6 at 2 p.m.); Georgia at Utah (Mar. 12 at p.m.); and Oklahoma at UCLA (Mar. 13 at 2 p.m.). Both sessions of the 2016 Pac-12 Women s Gymnastics Championships will also be part of the Networks telecast schedule on Saturday, March 19 from Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. Returning broadcasters this year include: play-by-play experts Jim Watson and Brian Webber, in addition to analyst Amanda Borden, a former American Gymnast and U.S. Gold Medalist from the 1996 summer U.S. Olympic team. New to the Networks this year are: former Utah women s gymnastics head coach Greg Marsden and Olympians Samantha Peszek and Alicia Sacramone Quinn. The Pac-12 Networks consists of one national and six regional networks devoted solely to the Pac-12. In addition to the hundreds of live televised Pac-12 sporting events, Pac-12 Networks subscribers will have access to Pac-12 Now, the TV Everywhere platform, which provides access to all Pac-12 Networks programming on any device through their broadband service. Utah PAC-12 ANNOUNCES WEEKLY GYMNASTICS HONORS STANFORD s Elizabeth Price named Gymnast of the Week UTAH S Breanna Hughes named Specialist of the Week UCLA s Katelyn Ohashi named Freshman/Newcomer of the Week The Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 women s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Jan. 12 Jan. 18. STANFORD s Elizabeth Price was named the Gymnast of the Week, UTAH s Breanna Hughes was voted Specialist of the Week, and UCLA s Katelyn Ohashi was named the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week. Stanford sophomore Elizabeth Price earned Gymnast of the Week honors for the second week in a row after her performance in the Cardinal s win on the road at No. 10 Georgia on Jan. 18. Price won the all-around for the second consecutive week, posting top-four finishes in three individual events. She scored Stanford s highest score on the vault, bars, and floor to help the Cardinal pull off an upset victory on the road. Price s strong performance on bars was critical as the gymnast before her had fallen and Price s score helped Stanford salvage a strong start to the meet. She was the only Stanford gymnast to score above on floor and provided a much-needed big score in the event to keep pace with Georgia. Price has scored or higher in seven of eight individual event performances this season. Her all-around average has her ranked fourth in the nation in the all-around so far this season. In her fresh-man season, Price was named the 2015 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year and won an NCAA individual championship on the vault. Utah senior Breanna Hughes earned Specialist of the Week honors for her performance in the Red Rocks win over No. 2 Southern Utah. This is Hughes s first Pac-12 weekly honor since she was named Fresh-man/Newcomer of the Week in March of Hughes scored career highs on all three events in which she competed, leading Utah to a season-high score and a road win over Southern Utah. In the process, Hughes placed first on both the vault on the bars, and placed second on the floor. Her bar score led the team, which is currently ranked first in the nation in average team bar score. UCLA freshman Katelyn Ohashi earned Freshman/Newcomer of the Week honors for her performance in the Bruins hard-fought loss at No. 1 Florida. Ohashi scored a 9.9 on bars to place third at Florida and help UCLA score a season-best 9.35 on bars and overall. She also contributed a 9.8 on beam, receiving a 9.9 from one judge, and a on floor to help UCLA win floor at the road meet.
