1 LAVC College Bulletin July 11-17, 2010 This Issue s News & Events LAVC Summer Session Classes Begin on July 12 Classes for the Summer 2010 Session will begin on Monday, July 12. All classes are currently filled, but students have the option of attending the first day of class and requesting an add slip from the instructor. Enrollment applications for the Summer Session are no longer being accepted by the college; the Admissions Office will only process applications for those students who have obtained an add slip from the instructor. Questions? Contact the Admissions Office at (818) Selected Offices will have Extended Hours of Operation from July During the first week of Summer Session 2010 (July 12-16), several campus offices will have extended hours of operation. The Office of Admissions & Records, Veteran Student Services, and International Student Services will be open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The Assessment Center will be open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The Graduation Office will be open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and closed on Friday. The Student Outreach & Recruitment will be open from Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Starting Monday, July 19, the above noted offices will return to their summer hours of operation. 2 Community College Students to Gather at LAVC for the Student Speak Out Rally The Associated Student Government and the LAVC Associated Student Union (ASU) will hold a Student Speak Out rally on Monday, July 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the steps of Monarch Square. Community college students will be gathering at Valley College to call attention to the statewide budget cuts that have impacted the availability of community college classes and threaten to prolong the higher education of thousands of students across California. Arthur Minasyan, the LAVC ASU president, will be speaking about how students can let their California legislators know about their dissatisfaction with the budget cuts to higher education. The event is being organized by the Associated Student Government, a group of student body presidents of the 109 California community colleges. For more information, visit Free Summer Playgroup for 2-4 Year-Old Kids at the LAVC Family Resource Center Starts July 14 The LAVC Family Resource Center and the Child Development Department is accepting enrollments for its Summer 2010 Creative Activities for Young Children Program from July 14-August 25 in the Family Resource Center in Bungalow 49. This free summer weekly playgroup comprises of a fun hour of social play and creative activities for children ages 2-4 years old. There will be two playgroup sessions on Wednesdays from a.m. and from 2-3 p.m.; participants can attend one or both sessions. Space is limited, so contact Gary Huff at (818) for more information or to RSVP. LAVC Kicks Off its First Annual Summerfest with a Production of the Broadway Musical Cabaret The LAVC Theater Arts Department, Music Department and Dance Program will present the Broadway musical Cabaret on Friday-Saturday, July and at 8 p.m. in the Main Stage Theater. This musical, which is set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, glimpses into the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Cabaret is the inaugural production of Valley College's Summerfest, an annual performing arts festival sponsored by the LAVC Theater Arts Department, Music Department and Dance Program. This production is directed by Cathy Susan Pyles, with musical direction by Patricia Hannifan, vocal coaching by Christian Nova, and choreography by Carla Lubow. Tickets are $16 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors and $10 for LAVC students. Sign Language Interpreters, Assistive Listening Devices and Alternate Format Materials are available by advance reservation. Please call (818) or

Sign Them Up for the LAVC Monarch Day Camp It s not too late to sign up your kids ages 5-years-old and up for the LAVC Monarch Day Camp. The choose from 15 different camps, which are held between June 28-August 20. The Monarch Camp also offers the following several specialty and overnight camps for kids ages 9-years-old and up: All Sports Camp, Aquatics Camp, Arts & Crafts Camp, Basketball Camp, Baseball Camp, Catalina Island Camp, Cheerleading Camp, Dance Camp, Football Camp, Sequoia Adventure Camp, Gymnastics Camp, Judo Camp, Nature Camp, Springboard Diving Camp, Yosemite Adventure Camp, Soccer Camp, Tennis Camp, Theatre Arts Camp, Travel/Theme Park Camp, and On-Campus Overnights.
