1 LAVC College Bulletin July 18-24, 2010 This Issue s News & Events Selected LAVC Offices Return to Limited Summer Hours Starting July 19 From July 19-August 13, the LAVC Admissions & Records Office, Graduation Office, Assessment Center, International Student Services Office, and Veteran Student Services Office will have special summer hours of operation. The offices of Admissions and Records, International Student Services and Veterans Student Services will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Tuesdays from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. The Assessment Center will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. The Graduation Office will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesdays from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and closed on Fridays. Sign Your Kids Up for the LAVC Monarch Day Camp During the summer, the LAVC Monarch Day Camp holds 15 different camps at LAVC for kids ages 5-years-old and up. The Monarch Camp also offers the following several specialty and overnight camps for kids ages 9-years-old and up: All Sports Camp, Aquatics Camp, Arts & Crafts Camp, Basketball Camp, Baseball Camp, Catalina Island Camp, Cheerleading Camp, Dance Camp, Football Camp, Sequoia Adventure Camp, Gymnastics Camp, Judo Camp, Nature Camp, Springboard Diving Camp, Yosemite Adventure Camp, Soccer Camp, Tennis Camp, Theatre Arts Camp, Travel/Theme Park Camp, and On-Campus Overnights. Parents can now register their children online at for all overnight adventure campus and supersaver day camp programs. Space is limited, so register

For more information, contact the LAVC Community Services Office at (818) , ext 4172 or visit Foster Youth Job Fair at LAVC LAVC will host a Foster Youth Job Fair on Tuesday, July 20 from 4-7 p.m. in Monarch Hall. The job fair specially geared towards youth in foster care will feature career information and resources, and job opportunities. There will be information on vocational schools and programs, how to seal records before applying for a job, and how to apply for school jobs, student worker positions and work study. There will also be professionals on hand to give advice on how to become a nurse, a school police department, a medical assistant or a teacher. Help Save 3 Lives! Donate Blood at the LAVC Blood Drive on July 21 LAVC and the American Red Cross will be holding a Blood Drive on Wednesday, July 21 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Monarch Hall. All participants will receive a coupon for a free Skillet Queso appetizer from Chili s, and can be entered to win a free drawing for a $500 gift card. Free Playgroup at LAVC on Wednesdays for Kids Ages 2-4 Years Old The LAVC Family Resource Center offers a free Creative Experiences for Young Children playgroup on Wednesdays from a.m. and 2-3 p.m. in Bungalow 49. This fun hour-long free weekly playgroup features social play and creative activities for parents and kids ages 2-4 years old. Participants can attend one or both sessions. 3 LAVC to Present the Broadway Musical Cabaret on July The LAVC Theater Arts Department, Music Department and Dance Program will present the Broadway musical Cabaret on Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24 at 8 p.m. in the Main Stage Theater. This musical, which is set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, glimpses into the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Cabaret is the inaugural production of Valley College's Summerfest, an annual performing arts festival sponsored by the LAVC Theater Arts Department, Music Department and Dance Program. This production is directed by Cathy Susan Pyles, with musical direction by Patricia Hannifan, vocal coaching by Christian Nova, and choreography by Carla Lubow. Tickets are $16 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors and $10 for LAVC students. Sign Language Interpreters, Assistive Listening Devices and Alternate Format Materials are available by advance reservation. To order tickets, visit or call (800) For more information, visit or call (818) Two Students in LAVC s High School Recruitment Project Win the First 5 LA Early Care and Education Video PSA Contest Martha Secundino and Sandra Tello, two San Fernando High School students in LAVC s High School Recruitment (HSR) Program who are also Project GRAD Scholars, have been selected winners of a public service announcement (PSA) video contest. The contest, which was sponsored by First 5 LA s Early Care and Education High School Recruitment (ECE HSR) Program, gave students in the HSR program the opportunity to write, direct, and edit video for a 60-second PSA, in which they inform their peers on issues related to Early Care and Education while encouraging them to participate in the First 5 LA s ECE HSR Program. Martha and Sandra s contest-winning PSAs explain how programs such as HSR Program can help our communities alleviate other social issues. In addition to the HSR at San Fernando High, LAVC is working with two other area high schools Polytechnic High, and Panorama High in a partnership with First 5. Congratulations!

4 Save the Date LAVC Summer Movie Night on July 31 The LAVC Associated Student Union and the LAVC Foundation will be holding a Summer Movie Night with a free screening of Ferris Bueller s Day Off on Saturday, July 31 in the grass area between the Theater Arts and Art buildings. This event is open to the public, and guests should bring their lawn chairs or blankets to watch the movie. There will be drinks and food available for purchase at the event.
