2 ETCETERA... Because of the confusion regarding the deadline of the last issue of the bulletin, I was unable to mention several events that happened in the parish and in the diocese. The Finance Council met on May 16 during which it approved the budget for the fiscal year, which begins July 1. Dan Gardiner, Chair of the Finance Council, shared this budget with the pastoral council the following Tuesday, May 21. The financial reports showed that our revenue dipped slightly in March and April, although we still show a small increase for the year. Thank you for your continued generosity through stewardship of offering. At the 6:00 pm Mass on Wednesday, May 22, we celebrated the accomplishments of the students of the 2013 class of St. Aloysius School, reminisced the fond memories, and sent them off with much love. I m grateful to the parents who entrusted their children to us, to the school s faculty and staff who guided them with wisdom and love, and to all of you who support this important ministry of the parish with your stewardship of prayer, ministry, and offering. Last Saturday, May 25, Bishop Muench ordained Joseph Vu (not related to me) to the priesthood and Joshua Johnson to the transitional diaconate. Although I couldn t attend the ordination liturgy, I joined with the bishop and the priests of the diocese in welcoming these two men as newest members of the clergy in our diocese. Please keep them in your prayers. Next Saturday, June 8, Bishop Muench will ordain several men to the permanent diaconate, among them David Dawson, parishioner of St. Aloysius Parish. David has been an intern at St. Joseph Cathedral and so hasn t been at St. Aloysius. I know that many of you, especially the Knights of Columbus, know David and may want to attend his ordination. We hope that David will be able to assist as a deacon at a Mass later on in the summer, to give us the opportunity to formally congratulate him. Last Thursday, May 23, I was invited to give a talk at the Naval Air Station & Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chase, LA on Leadership. Although the title of my talk wasn t explicitly religious, its content was and could ve been easily titled The Spirituality of Leadership with insights culled from the Catholic tradition on the dignity of each person, the importance of humility, the ability to listen, etc. I was pleasantly surprised that people were able to express freely their Christian faith. I had an extended visit with a commanding officer who shared how he tried to help his soldiers see that heroism in the military isn t just valiance on the front line but in the everyday acts of kindness. This officer never studied with the Jesuits, but his outlook was definitely Ignatian: finding God in all things. At Mass last Sunday, we blessed several of our parishioners as they prepared to leave on the mission trip to Nicaragua. As you know, this is the mission the Social Responsibility Commission decided on after it determined that the precarious situation in Honduras made trips there uncertain. The Commission has shifted our parish support, financial and otherwise, to the mission in Nicaragua. Please pray for them and for the people in the mission. St. Aloysius Day celebrations are definitely on. The band has been booked, the Knights of Columbus are ready to prepare the food, and the games for the children have been reserved and prepared. Please mark the date on your calendar: Saturday, June 22. After the 4:30 pm mass, we ll gather in the gym for an Cont d on Page 3 Parish Staff Parish Office: Fr. Than N. 3 BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN THE LORD John Gerald Cado Father of Jennifer Cado Richardson Grandfather of Leah Richardson Fredrick Ministry Handbook Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Ministry Handbook & Directory for the Church. This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The book is being provided at no cost to our Church, including the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our Ministry Handbook, please Cathy Dardenne cdardenne@staloysiusparish.com. The advertising representative is here at our Church this week. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Ministry Handbook & Directory advertiser over a nonadvertiser. It will pay to advertise in our new Ministry Handbook & Directory published by Guidebook Publishing. Please Update Your Membership Information Cont d from Page 2 evening of fun and fellowship. If you went last year, you know how much fun it was, so don t miss it this year! And if you didn t go last year, don t miss it again! I pray you ll be able to slow down during the summer. Some of you will take trips to visit families and friends, or just to get away. While out of town, you may want to consult for Mass times of the closest churches to wherever you are. Bring back bulletins and share with us what you find helpful in the churches you visit. Here at home, please note that during the summer, Mass on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays will be held in the chapel in the Administration Building. I would appreciate your prayers for my sister Nguy Vu who s been battling cancer. Her doctors have recommended that the treatment be stopped and she enter hospice care. She s blessed to receive good, loving support from her young and wonderful son who has been devoting much of his time to caring for his mother, as well as from my other sister and my sister-in-law who have been helping with her care in spite of their busy schedule. Peace! Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory. It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do You Want Your Membership Published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. Thanks Susi Mistric, Chairperson American Saints, Blesseds and Venerables during the Year of Faith St. Marianne Cope, O.S.F. Missionary to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii St. Marianne Cope was a born leader. Growing up as one of the older children of a large family, she went to work in a factory right after finishing the eighth grade. She joined the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis a few years later, and began a whirlwind of leadership roles: twice as the novice mistress of her congregation, and three times as the superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. This leadership, coupled with her sympathy for mankind in general, led her to volunteer to go to Hawaii to take care of the lepers. She was finally stationed in Molokai, where she brought education and happiness to the leper colony: even providing bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women. Ministry Highlights RCIA/RCIA for Children By: Rebecca East and Tricia Greely RCIA The RCIA process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) continues all year to be a blessing to many people at St Aloysius. The Team always looks for people from the congregation who can serve as either Hospitality Ministers or Sponsors for those participating in the process. Hospitality Ministers serve those who are preparing to become Catholic by preparing and serving the refreshments for sessions on Sunday morning, and during Lent, on Thursday evening. There is a rotating schedule so ministers serve only once or twice a month. Sponsors are the most critical members to the RCIA process. As a sponsor, Catholic members of St. Aloysius Parish share their faith experiences one-on-one with a candidate for Full Communion. The commitment is to attend the sessions --one hour on Sunday Mornings and during Lent an additional hour and half on Thursday evenings. Sponsors are faithful Catholics who live out their faith every day and are able to walk with another person coming into the faith. No formal training or schooling is required to be a sponsor. RCIA For Children The RCIA for Children is a ministry to prepare children who are seven and over who have not been baptized, who are uncatechized, or who were baptized in another faith. We meet on Sunday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. We are looking for people to serve as catechists as well as sponsors. For more information, please contact Tricia Greely at tgreely@staloysiusparish.com or call ext June 2, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
