2 From the Rector Standing with my family and friends on the beach under a post-storm sky still thick with clouds, we saw the beginnings of a rainbow. At one end it grew from the sand, and at the other, it came up out of the water. We watched as it made its slow motion journey until the two ends met at the top. And then it stood still, and so did we, holding our collective breath. After several minutes, and ever so gracefully, it made the trip home to the horizon from which it came. Without our having to say so, we all knew we had been given a gift. To a company of people being tossed about in a storm of loss and grief, the rainbow asserted the same promise it s been making all along: God is with you, and will not abandon you. It s been a stormy summer. Would that we d had more of the kinds of storms here in California that my family experienced on vacation in Georgia and Florida. The lack of the wet kind of storm here has led to a fire season more brutal than usual. In other parts of the country, literal storms have led to floods that have taken lives and homes. And storms of violence have raged across the globe and have swept across our cities, taking innocent lives and leaving grief and despair in their wake. In my own sadness and confusion through all the summer storms, that moment on the beach keeps coming back to me. As children of God, heirs of the Promise, we are called, not just to see and point to the rainbow, but to extend its promise to those suffering most in the thick of life s storms. As God s people, we are made to bring comfort and hope, not only with our words, but in our actions and with our lives. Every fall is ripe with the possibility of new life and greater love. I am grateful all over again this fall to take up with you the holy work of being living signs of God s love in a stormy world. Faithfully, Pastor Carri+

3 Door of Hope Dinner Wednesday, September 7: 6:00 p.m. Contact George Rothwell via the church office to participate in preparing a dish and sharing a meal with the residents. Bible Study continues at 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays. The location is to be determined. Lectio Divina will continue at Roberta Goodman s home at 5:30 p.m. on the September 14 and 28. Choir Rehearsals The adult choir of Saint Mark s will resume rehearsals on Thursdays begins September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Room. Anyone desiring to join the choir (no auditions required!), please contact Lisa Sylvester through the church office. Crafting at Villa Gardens 10:00 a.m. Join host Charlotte Mathews on Saturday, September 10 in the craft room on the 5th floor at Villa Gardens with your projects. This is a good time for fellowship and to get some needed answers for your crafting dilemmas from experienced crafters, knitters, and needle-workers. Adult Education: Begins again on September 11 9:00 a.m. Sundays, Brown Library Children, Youth and Families Update Acolyte Training - We will train our acolytes for the upcoming year on Sunday, September 11 at 12:00 p.m. in the church. If you are in 6th-12th grade, would like to acolyte, and have not already let Parker know, please her at CYF@saintmarksaltadena.org. Youth Group - We are excited for another great year of Youth Group at Saint Mark's. Mark your calendar for our kickoff party at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11 Details to follow! If you want to add on a bit, you can include cold cereal & milk, or yogurt. Set up and clean-up is simpler than on other Sundays, and the cost especially if you pair with a partner is moderate a great way to start if you ve never hosted a coffee hour before!
