Adiabatic shear bands in particulate composites. 2. Strain localization in polycarbonates. 3. Deduction of mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes from molecular statics/dynamics simulations.

5 Professor Romesh C. Batra honored with Engineering Science Medal of Society of Engineering Science Romesh Batra and Judy Todd, SES President, June 2009 Professor Romesh C. Batra was honored with Engineering Science Medal of the Society of Engineering Science (SES) at the recently concluded 2009 Joint ASCE-ASME-SES Conference on Mechanics and Materials that was held in Blacksburg, Va. The medal was presented to Dr. Batra by Professor Judith A. Todd, President of SES and P. B. Breneman Department Head Chair of the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at The Pennsylvania State University. During the award ceremony, Dr. Todd said, "The Engineering Science Medal is awarded in recognition of a singularly important contribution to Engineering Science. This year s recipient is Professor Romesh Batra, Clifton C. Garvin Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, at Virginia Tech, and the 1996 President of the Society of Engineering Science. Dr. Batra has a broad range of research interests that include: multiscale analysis of multiphysics problems involving material and geometric nonlinearities; nanomechanics; dynamic failure under shock loads; smart structures; and functionally graded materials. Today he is being recognized for his singularly important contributions to studies of adiabatic shear bands. Adiabatic shear bands usually precede ductile fracture of materials deformed at

6 high strain rates. They are narrow regions, a few microns wide, with permanent strains exceeding 100%. Dr. Batra s pioneering research has: identified deformation fields near the tip of an adiabatic shear band; developed an algorithm and computer code to delineate the evolution of adiabatic shear bands; analyzed adiabatic shear bands without presupposing their location and orientation; determined adiabatic shear band spacing and width in terms of material parameters and loading conditions; designed functionally graded tungsten heavy alloys for optimizing the adiabatic shear band initiation time; and delineated the initiation and development of adiabatic shear bands under combined thermal and mechanical loads. His work has found broad application in the defense, automotive, mining and materials processing industries. Professor Batra is a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics, ASEE, ASME, and Society of Engineering Science. He is co-founder and Editor of the journal Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, and Editor- in-chief of the International Journal of Computational Methods. His citation reads: This is to certify that Romesh C. Batra has been accorded the Engineering Science Medal of the Society in recognition of his singularly important contributions to studies of adiabatic shear bands. His pioneering research has identified material and geometric parameters that influence the initiation and propagation of material failure at high strain rates with applications to blast loading, projectile penetration, hot forging, high speed machining, grinding, ore crushing, and failure of components subjected to explosive thermo-mechanical loads. It gives me great pleasure to present the award to Dr. Romesh Batra."
