3 2016 Braude Award ~ Dr. Rebekka Klausen~ Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry Johns Hopkins University Rational Synthesis of Semiconductor Fragments Wednesday, October 26 th, :00-8:30 pm Johns Hopkins University, Homewood Campus Faculty Club, ABC Rooms 3400 North Charles St. Baltimore, MD Speaker Bio: Rebekka Klausen joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor in July Prior to JHU, she earned her PhD with Prof. Eric Jacobsen (Harvard University, ) and completed postdoctoral work with Prof. Colin Nuckolls (Columbia University, ). She directs a research group of eight students and postdocs, including three undergraduate students. Research in the Klausen group is dedicated to discovering new electronic materials based on organic and main group architectures. Abstract: Rational synthesis is enormously powerful for the construction of complex chemical architectures. The application of rational synthesis to organic materials chemistry leads to the isolation of innovative and well- defined materials inaccessible by top- down methods. The smaller synthetic toolkit available to the silicon and main group chemist limits the role of strategic synthesis in the design and preparation of semiconductor nanomaterials for optoelectronic and biomedical applications. This talk describes the development of new synthetic chemistry leading to BN heteroaromatic compounds, complex polysilanes, and charge transfer materials. The contributions of undergraduate researchers will receive detailed attention.
4 Directions to JHU are given at the website below: Parking is available in the back of the club. Price $20 members/nonmembers and $10 Students payable at event 6:00-6:30 pm Registration/Networking 6:30-7:15 pm Dinner 7:15 pm Presentation of Award 7:30 pm Lecture RSVP contact- Recent Activities W.R. Grace Event Our September Dinner Meeting took place on Wednesday, September 28th at Grace in Columbia. The 55 attendees enjoyed networking over dinner. After dinner, Grace Vice President and Chief Technologist Dr. Robert Gatte gave an engaging talk titled Grace: Past, Present, and Future. The talk was followed by tours of some of Grace s labs and manufacturing facilities on- site, highlighting the synthesis of catalysts and related products and technologies used in energy and refining, polyolefins and plastics, as well as petrochemical and other chemical manufacturing applications. The Section is very grateful to Grace for hosting a very enjoyable and informative evening! October, 2016 Volume 73, Number 5
5 Undergraduate and Graduate Student Travel Grants Undergraduate and Graduate students may apply to the ACS Maryland Section to receive up to $500 for travel and expenses to attend the 253rd ACS National Meeting and Exposition in San Francisco April 2-6, This is open to ACS members who are enrolled full time in a college or university in the Maryland Section. The application should include: Your ACS membership number An estimated budget (cost for travel, registration, lodging, and meals) A 250 word essay describing your motivation for attending the meeting A copy of your abstract and the abstract number ACS gave it when your abstract was accepted A letter of support from your faculty advisor Please state what would be the most convenient way for the check to be made out, in the event you are awarded a travel grant. To a certain extent the decisions will be made on a first come, first served basis, however the goal is to allow students from as many schools as possible to attend, so special consideration will be given to the first student who applies from each college/university. We especially encourage schools which have never had a student apply for a travel grant, to consider applying for a travel grant. Submit your application to Louise Hellwig by e- mail (Louise.Hellwig@morgan.edu). If you are awarded a travel grant, the following items need to be submitted after the meeting: Photocopies of receipts totaling the amount of the award. Trip report summarizing your experience at the meeting and photos of yourself at your poster at the meeting so we can proudly post them in the section s newsletter.
