Learn more about metal casting in a university setting with other high school students at a course sponsored by: American Foundry Society Cleveland Akron Canton Ohio Chapter What is this? It is a hands-on short course in metal casting designed with a goal of identifying and promoting a variety of metal casting careers. Why should I go? The opportunity to learn about current trends in the metal casting industry, inter-relationships between the many jobs involved in metal casting, and the application of mathematics and computer software simulation in metal casting. Students will have an actual metal casting project! Who is going to be there? Professionals and educators in the Cast Metals Industry along with 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th grade students interested in learning more about the industry as a career. When will it happen? June 29 th to July 3 rd, 2015 Where will it be? 2 APPLICATION FORM FOR SHORT COURSE IN METAL CASTING Cleveland Akron Canton (CAC) Ohio Chapter of the American Foundry Society will sponsor up to two students to attend the 2015 Western Michigan University Short Course in Metal Casting. The CAC Chapter will provide the $650 course fee and a transportation stipend to travel to WMU. Please note that it is the student s responsibility to arrange transportation to and from WMU. Last summer, the Short Course in Metal Casting at WMU was a beneficial learning experience for the high school students that participated. We plan to offer the one-week metal casting course at WMU June 29 th through July 3 rd The short course is designed with a goal of identifying and promoting the variety of viable metal casting careers. This hands-on program in metal casting is tailored towards 10 th - 12 th graders and the activities will appeal to the interest, attitude and motivation of our young people. It is our hope that each Chapter will select and support some young people for week at WMU. The fee is $650 for each student, room & board is included in these prices. Please send me name(s) and contact information for the student(s) that your Chapter will be supporting. I will in turn send them each (second week in May 2015) an agenda, directions to WMU and information on room & board at WMU. 4 Short Course in Metal Casting Presenter: Dr. Sam Ramrattan is a Full Professor in the Department of Engineering Design, Manufacturing and Management Systems, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Western Michigan University. He received his Bachelors and Masters from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Ph.D. and Post Doc. from Iowa State University. His areas of specialization are materials and processes improvement (emphasizing casting processes and non-traditional manufacturing processes). He is a Technical Advisor to the American Foundry Society and a Key Professor for the Foundry Educational Foundation. He publishes regularly and has been awarded patents. Sam has taught at the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and University of Technology Malaysia. His research projects involve testing and process improvement in metal casting. Objective: To educate young adults about the valuable career opportunities in metal casting. Location: Western Michigan University Metal Casting Laboratory Who should attend? High School Students (grades 10 th through 12 th ) with an interest in math and science. Prerequisites: None Type of presentation: There will be short lectures related to metal casting with practical applications of the casting processes. Field trips to metal casting industries with opportunities to meet and converse with professionals. Duration: 5 days (Monday, 29 th June through Friday, 3 rd July 2015) Attendance limit: 15 students Equipment: Computers and personal calculators will be provided for the students. Handouts: Workbook designed as an instructional aid to be used by students during classroom activities. It has sections for answers, drawings, calculations, charts, and general note taking.
5 Topics Covered: The history of metal casting. Current trends in the metal casting industry. Interrelationship between manufacturing (molding, melting, filling and finishing), engineering, quality, purchasing, marketing and sales of castings. The application of computers in metal casting. The application of mathematics and sciences in metal casting. Career opportunities (AFS/NADCA/FEF) in the metal casting industry.
