2 I). Overview of the chapter in 2004 Kent State SPIE Student Chapter has been established at Kent State University since July 2002 with the vision of Dr. Oleg D. Lavrentovich, who is currently the chapter advisor, and the support of the SPIE committee. In the past of 2004, our chapter has held quite a few activities and established cooperation network with several other student chapters. Moreover, our chapter has been expanding via having new members included; till the moment of this report, there are totally 21 active members in spite that 4 members become inactive since graduation. Our chapter members have made academic achievements in publications and receiving awards. The following will give a detailed description of our chapter activities in 2004.
3 II). Chapter activities in We had our regular chapter meeting in April, and discussed chapter development and adopted members suggestions to chapter s future direction. 2. We have elected new officers for during our chapter regular meeting, listed below: President: Mingxia Gu Vice-president: Bohdan Senyuk Treasurer: Ebru Aylin Buyuktanir Secretary: Xinghua Wang 3. We have invited SPIE fellow, Dr. Joseph W. Haus, Professor and Director of the Electro-Optics Program of University of Dayton, to visit our chapter in May. Dr. Haus also gave our chapter members a lecture regarding his research area - photonic crystal technology. Aziz Mahfoud, who is the current student chapter president of University of Dayton, also came with Dr. Haus, and along with three other chapter members, Gurkan Peksoz et al. Dr. Haus (second left) poses with our chapter members in Liquid Crystal Institute s Cleanroom during his visit in May, The Great Lakes Photonics Symposium was held in Cleveland, OH in June. Our chapter have taken part of the organizing work by contacting universities across the United States, and help attendees finding hotels with low cost etc. Our chapter hosted a reception for all the student attendees during the conference, SPIE secretary Paul F. McManamon and James G. Grote from Air Force Research Lab

Grote poses among students attendees during the reception hosted by Kent State SPIE Student Chapter in Cleveland Renaissance Hotel June, Ivan Smalyukh, our chapter founder was elected as Secretary of the newly established Great Lakes SPIE Regional Chapter, Xinghua Wang, president of our chapter for was nominated to coordinate the Student Chapters in the Great Lakes Region serving as a member of the Education Committee. Our current chapter vice president Bohdan Senyuk designed and constructed the web site for the Great Lakes SPIE Regional Chapter: A snapshot of the Great Lakes SPIE Regional Chapter website
5 6. Eleven members of our student chapter have attended the 49 th SPIE annual meeting with support of 2004 SPIE travel grant in Denver, Colorado in August. The members also attended the student chapter meeting on the first of the conference. Several members gave presentations during the conference. Students and faculty gave us a brief description of the research area they are working on. Prof. David M. Walba, Co-Principal Investigator of the research center poses with our chapter member at the FLCMRC Boulder, CO in August, Our chapter has visited Boulder Nonlinear System (BNS) in August. Teresa
6 Ewing has given us a wonder tour of the BNS and showed us some of BNS products, like SLM, Beam Steering device etc. Teresa Ewing, Senior Research Specialist (Middle) poses with our chapter during our visit to Boulder Nonlinear System (BNS) in August, Oleg Pishnyak, one of our chapter members, was funded by National Science Foundation (NSF) to do research in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Akita University, Japan for 2 months. 7 10. Discuss the possibility of online and remote academic exchange program with University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University s SPIE student chapters. A draft proposal was finished. III). Perspective in In the next academic year, we will continue to improve our chapter, enhance members academic experience, and extend the network of collaborations and communications. The following is a list of planning activities. 1. Invite SPIE committee member, Dr. James G. Grote (Air Force Research Lab) to visit Kent State University. 2. Fund raising through Graduate Student Senate of Kent State to support Dr. Grote s visit, and student activities during their visit 3. Start extensive collaboration with University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University s SPIE student chapters 4. Collaboration with newly founded Great Lake SPIE Regional Chapter. 5. Further discuss the implementation of the remote and online academic exchange program with the University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University s SPIE student chapters. 6. Proposing the Great Lake Tour for high school students project, joint with Great Lake SPIE Regional Chapter, and University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University s SPIE student chapters. 7. Promote academic program in the fields of Optics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Applications of Liquid Crystals, especially the Graduate Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary program at Liquid Crystal Institute. 8. Give lectures to undergraduate students at Kent State University about liquid crystals and their applications, as well as about fascinating opportunities of research in this area. 9. Organize tours for undergraduate students to visit Liquid Crystal Institute, and optics research in the Physics department. 10. Meet high school students interested in science, and possible seminars and tours will be arranged. 11. Take part in scientific conferences in the fields of Optics, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Applications of Liquid Crystals.
8 12. Try to create chances for the members to intern during the summer vacation in numerous companies related to field of their studies. 13. Visit local companies working in the fields of Optics, Engineering, and Applications of Liquid Crystals 14. Maintain close relations, interchange experience and plan common activities with other SPIE chapters around the world 15. Apply for SPIE grants and scholarships available to chapter and individual chapter members IV). Financial Report Funds: Amount: 1.
