23 Measure 3011a. Washington Monthly: Methodology of National Universities Rankings The Washington Monthly's national universities rankings are based on the university's contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). Each category is weighted equally. Social mobility covers the following areas: a) The percentage of students receiving Pell Grants, and b) The difference between the actual graduation rate and the predicted graduation rate a measure of how well the school performs as an engine of social mobility (the predicted rate of graduation is based on incoming SAT scores and Pell Grant percentages). Research consists of the following areas: a) The number of dollars in total research expenditures, and b) The school s ranking in the number of bachelor s recipients who go on to receive PhDs, relative to school size. Service includes the following areas: a) The number of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps, relative to school size, b) Percentage of students who serve in ROTC, c) Percentage of funds in federal work-study money that goes to community service (versus noncommunity service), d) A combined measure of the number of students participating in community service and a total number of service hours performed, both relative to school size, and e) A combined measure of the number of staff supporting community service, relative to the total number of staff; the number of academic courses that incorporate service, relative to school size; and whether the institution provides scholarships for community service.
