2 Methodology This study included all 179,190 students who were enrolled at Ivy Tech during the academic, year including high school students and guest students. This report defines transfer as any enrollment activity at a private or public institution that is not Ivy Tech, as reported by the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). This report examines transfer activity within one year from the term of the student s last enrollment at Ivy Tech. Any transfer activity that falls outside the research timeframe was not examined for the purpose of this report. Findings Out of 179,190 students who were enrolled at Ivy Tech in the academic year, 31,605 transferred to another institution (17.6 percent) within one year. Of those who transferred, the majority did so without earning a credential; only 4,757 students (2.7 percent) earned an Ivy Tech credential before transferring, which is 15.1 percent of all Ivy Tech transfer students during this time period, although the credential may have been awarded several terms prior to the student s last enrollment at Ivy Tech. Annual Unduplicated Enrollment Headcount Total Annual Enrollment 179,190 Did not Earned Ivy Tech 26,848 (15.0%) Earned Ivy Tech 1 4,757 (2.7%) Table 1. Students by Academic Period, Includes duplicated headcounts if the student is enrolled for more than one semester 2 Students who transferred within one year of their last term of enrollment at Ivy Tech Table 3 shows transfer rates by registration type. As shown, guest students transferred at the highest rate (e.g., 50.2 percent), which is not surprising since guest students are, by definition, students from other institutions taking courses at Ivy Tech. Transfer-in students were also mobile, with a relatively high transfer rate of 24.0 percent. These students could be guest students acquiring credits from multiple institutions in order to meet financial and academic needs. Approximately one in four high school students transferred to another institution. Transfer rates were the lowest for new, first-time degreeseeking students, as 2,920 (9.1 percent) transferred within one year. IR # Page 1

Table 5 shows one-year transfer headcounts and transfer rates broken out by Ivy Tech region. Consistent with past findings, the Central Indiana, Northwest and Lafayette regions have the largest number of transfer students. Ivy Tech regions with the highest percentage of students transferring are Lafayette, Bloomington and Southeast. As shown on Table 6, Central Indiana, Northeast and Northwest have the largest number of dual-credit students who transferred. Dual-credit students from the Northeast and Southwest regions have the highest transfer rate where approximately one in three students transferred to another institution. Overall, 22 percent of dual credit students transferred to another institution. A number of factors could be the driving force behind the differences seen in transfer trends across regions. The largest campuses tended to have the largest number of transfer students. However, regions closer to large public institutions, particularly Central Indiana, Bloomington, and Lafayette, tend to have largest transfer activity as well, likely indicating dual enrollment or that students use Ivy Tech as a stepping stone to enrollment at these other institutions.
