They re hiring off- campus assistants for the academic year a perfect fit for outgoing, creative, tech- savvy undergraduates who enjoy planning events. Located in Crampton Hall, in the Southwest Residential Area, the center provides support, connection and involvement across a range of gender identities and concerns.
2 Community conference If you who work or volunteer with children in grades K 12, don t miss an upcoming conference on responding to child abuse. As a state- mandated reporter, you need to be able to recognize the signs of abuse; provide safe, effective intervention; understand the reporting process; and take action in your community. The event is Monday, March 16 at Greenfield Community College; register by March Regional sustainability conference Register now for Strengthening Ties for Collective Impact: Campus Sustainability in the Northeast Region, April 9 10 at the Campus Center. Hear from prominent speakers; tour area campuses; take part in workshops; and network. Register online and plan your schedule. Send your teens to college this summer Summer Pre- College at UMass, June 28 Aug. 8, features a dozen hands- on learning experiences offering teens college credit and valuable experience. Choose from one-, two- and six- week programs in a wide range of topic areas. Students will live in the Commonwealth Honors College, enjoy all meals and extra- curricular events; a commuter option is also available. 4 On- campus education Thursday, March 26: Workshop on miscroagressions and societal oppression 9 11 a.m. Register for Approaches to Engaging Today's Students in Conversations about Racialization, Microaggressions and Societal Oppression. The workshop and consultations with Jesse Tauriac, assistant professor of psychology at Lasell College, are part of the Center for Teaching and Faculty Development s semester- long sessions on the topic. Visit the website for information and to register. This month s free trainings Enhance your skills with free workshops offered by Workplace Learning and Development. This month s courses include harassment and bullying prevention; meeting leadership; copyrights; BuyWays requisitions; travel payment processing; introductory Word and Excel; retirement planning; and more. The Labor/Management Workplace Education Program s free training and education opportunities this month include leadership and communication skills, intermediate- level Excel, writing at work, resume and cover letter sessions and more. A Word class for advanced users is also available for USA union members. Staff news Patricia Cardoso, associate dean of students for conduct and compliance, has been named a co- chair of the Association for Student Conduct Administrators diversity committee for the coming year. Michael Dodge, assistant director of residence education for the Residential Learning Communities and Commonwealth Honors College, has been selected as a faculty member for the Northeast Association of College and University Housing Officers regional entry- level institute. The event, June 2 4 at UMass Amherst, is an intensive professional development seminar for residence life professionals aspiring to mid- level positions in the field and beyond. Jessica Prodoehl, residence director of Melville Hall, has been elected to the American College Personnel Association s Commission for Housing and Residence Life directorate body. Her three- year term begins at the ACPA annual convention, March 5 8 in Tampa, Fla.
5 Jessica Fantini joined the Residence Education staff in January, as residence director in Oak Hall. In memoriam Matthew Schiek, a junior Commonwealth Honors College student majoring in mechanical engineering, died February 14 following an off- campus accident. The Freehold, N.J. native and high school varsity hockey player was active in the Amherst s Boltwood Project, assisting physically and developmentally challenged community members. We extend our sincere condolences to Matthew s family and friends, at home and at UMass Amherst.
