Whether it is your freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year, some keys to success at H-F remain the same: Be on time to class. Every day is different at H-F: block days, PLC days, 50- min. period days print out a daily schedule for yourself as you get into the routine this year. You can view the period days and times at this webpage, and check your schedule in PowerSchool: parent.hfhighschool.org/public/home.html. Dress for the weather. You may be walking the path during the school day. On beautiful days, this is welcome news. On other days, don t be embarrased to use an umbrella it can be a Viking essential. Do your homework. Depending on your courseload, plan for between two to three hours of homework most nights. Remember, our H-F Library is open after school until 5:45 p.m. to provide you with a quiet place to work. Get involved! Join a club (you have more than 80 to explore), audition for a play or sign up for a sports team. It will expand your circle of friends, help you manage your time and it will look great on your college applications. H-F provides a pre-test, study booklet, and tiered set of courses to deliver instruction to students specifically designed for their current level. The cost of the program is a small fraction of the $3,000-$5,000 that some test prep companies charge, with comparable results. We schedule the sessions to coordinate with the SAT and ACT test administration dates throughout the school year. An online version of Viking Test Prep is also available to students. The online course is free and taught by the same faculty members who teach the onsite course. Viking Test Prep Online provides a great refresher course for students who have taken the onsite version, while giving busy students the opportunity to participate in test prepartion. A student s SAT or ACT score is perhaps the single most important number college admissions offices consider in making decisions about students. It can be the deciding factor in whether or not a student is accepted to the college of her choice. Equally important, the higher the student s score, the greater the amount of financial aid many schools will extend. The cost is $150 and includes a pre-test, a study guide (if applicable) and hours of instruction over a five-week period. Our program is taught by content specialists from H-F. We use the pre-test results (for ACT Prep) to create tiers of classes. Students receive instruction at the level appropriate for them. Each week students receive one hour of instruction in each of the subject-area tests. For ACT, there are classes in English, Reading, Math and Science. For SAT, there are classes in Math, and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. On Wednesday, Oct. 11, freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take the tests noted below. Please note that this is an early-dismissal day with students excused at 1:20 p.m. There is also no first period. Check-in and seating for testing will begin by 8:20 a.m. FRESHMEN will take the PSAT 8/9 test. SOPHOMORES will take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). JUNIORS will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The PSAT is a Preliminary SAT exam and like AP exams is administered by the College Board. H-F uses the PSAT to determine AP potential. This test is also the qualification test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. SENIORS are not required to attend school on this day. They are invited to use this day to explore colleges and universities, either through in-person visits or online through Naviance. The H-F Guidance Department will be offering guided trips to select colleges. Call for tour information. For this school year, H-F will introduce Viking Values, a program that aligns with the Illinois State Board of Education s socioemotional learning standards, as well as with H-F s own mission to improve the quality of each student s life by advancing the ethical, emotional and social development of all. The Viking Values of Perseverance, Empathy, Awareness, Compassion and Effort create the acronym, PEACE. Each value will be highlighted throughout the school year, beginning with Perseverance, the Viking Values focus from Aug. 14-Oct. 6. Students and parents can read more about the values in the student planner, which was distributed during registration, and via the school s social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter. Joey has the special power to travel through time by holding a baseball card and concentrating really hard. When he s given an assignment to write a paper on Jackie Robinson, it only makes sense to head back to 1947 and meet the famous baseball player. During his journey, Joey experiences what it s like to be African- American during a time of segregation. Directed by Jill Bonavia-Galligani.
