Sue Chambless, Chair; Gee Gee Adams, Helen Castrillo, Snookie Collins, Nancy Dobrenic, Caroline Fleetwood, Peggy Golden, Janice Lamattina, Carolyn Lovell, Ruth Stephenson, Emily Swift, Neile Weis Garden Club of Georgia Recognizes Club with First Place Awards Cassina was recognized at the annual GCG Convention in April for Outstanding Accomplishment with First Place awards in the following areas: Publications (Newsletter) and Website. The Peach Rosette, presented for the best overall Club History, a Silver Perpetual Trophy awarded for the best history 75 years or older and First Place were awarded for the 80 Year History of Cassina. Special thanks to Dottie Fielder for her diligent efforts in submitting our award materials.

2 May 2009 Page 2 Board Notes The following items were approved at the April Board meeting: Accepted bid for display cabinets in meeting cabin; to be ratified by membership at April meeting. Accepted recommendations of Christmas Tour Review committee. Approved letter to County Attorney referencing 1990 agreement about water bottom lease. Accepted donation from Jimmy McMillan of double oxen yoke. April Meeting The Meeting Cabin was filled to capacity with Active members for the April meeting. Naturalist Stacia Hendricks from Little St. Simons Island shared valuable information through her power point presentation about living in harmony with our Island critters. Delicious refreshments were provided by Chair Susan Haley and Martha Jane Dodson, Julie Spivey and Louise Ufer. The April Birthday winner was Ann Worthington. May Field Trip to Harris Neck Wildlife Preserve Tuesday, May 12 Harris Neck's 2,762 acres consists of saltwater marsh, grassland, mixed deciduous woods, and cropland. Because of this great variety in habitat, many different species of wildlife are attracted to the refuge throughout the year. 3 May 2009 Page 3 Old St. Simons Revisited Barbara Murrah and her daughter, Natalie graciously hosted Cassina members at their home at Oatland Plantation on April 7 th. The large plantation offers a view of the Island as it once was with native vegetation, wildlife and beautiful views. The group toured the stables and pasture, admiring the horses and other animals that have been rescued by the Murrah s and then enjoyed a delicious lunch at Barbara s home. Standing Rules Membership Change Im portant Notice Please note the following changes that were approved by the Board and Membership in March relating to Article III of the Standing Rules Application for Membership. Acceptance of new members will be in order of application compliance as vacancies occur. A prospective member shall attend an open meeting as a guest of her sponsor. Pictured: Barbara Murrah, second from left; Natalie Murrah, center Red Hat Society Learns Cassina History Frances Allen represented Cassina at a meeting of the recently formed Red Hat Society at Magnolia Manor. The seniors were interested in learning about the history of our Club and the Cabins. Subsequent to this first open meeting, the sponsor and prospective member will meet at the cabins with a representative of the Membership Committee to review the New Member Handbook and Sponsor Guidelines. At this time the prospective member may request and submit an application for membership. In addition to this, the prospective member and her sponsor must attend a second open meeting and the prospective member must serve as a volunteer in one of the Club s major fundraising projects, e.g., Tour Hostess, Garden Walk Docent, to complete her application requirements. The applicant s place on the membership acceptance list is determined by the completion date of the above requirements. Frances, pictured above in white hat, is now looking for her own red hat! The changes will be effective beginning with all applications submitted after June 1, 2009.

4 May 2009 Page 4 Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk Meeting Members of the 2009 Garden Walk team met on April 9 th to finalize plans for the third annual event. Committee members recruited and coordinated more than 275 volunteers for the Walk, Garden Market and Photography Exhibition. The dedication of our many volunteers produced a tremendously successful Garden Walk Weekend. Juried Photography Exhibition The Opening Reception of the Tabby & Tillandsia Juried Photography Exhibition was held on April 21 st at Left Bank Art Gallery. More than one hundred friends of the Garden Walk attended to view floral photography by Cassina members, Ann Caswell, Ladye Heisel, Lisa Rozier, Joanne Scott, Sara Taylor, Ann Worthington and other artists from Georgia and Florida. The inaugural juried competition and exhibition were chaired by Peggy Golden and Cheri Leavy with special assistance from Cassina friend and Gallery owner, Millie Wilcox. Hors d oeuvres were provided by some of Cassina s finest chefs including Frances Allen, Caroline Fleetwood, Elizabeth Freyer, Peggy Golden, Phillis Harrell, Ruth Kolumber, Jennifer Kuja, Jennifer Leavy, Bev Nash and Sara Taylor.
