1 Kentucky High School Athletic Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCT. 15, 2001 VOLLEYBALL REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS THIS WEEK Volleyball postseason continues action with Regional Tournaments this week. Regional Tournaments are single elimination, with the winner and runner-up from the eight regions advancing to next week s State Tournament in Union. Following are the sites for the regional tournaments. Schedules are posted on the KHSAA Scoreboard ( and scores will be posted as they are received. Region Tournament Sites 1. Apollo; 2. Greenwood; 3. Fairdale; 4. Sacred Heart; 5. Newport Central Catholic; 6. Rowan Co.; 7. Woodford Co.; 8. Whitesburg. STATE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT DRAW The draw for the 23 rd KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament has been conducted. The State Volleyball Tournament will be played Oct at Ryle High School and Gray Middle School in Union. This marks the fourth consecutive year for Ryle and Gray to host the event and sixth time in the last eight years. Six-time defending State Champion Assumption will go for its seventh consecutive title as the Rockets have claimed volleyball s top spot eight of the last nine years. Following is the first round region vs. region match-ups for the State Tournament. SOCCER LEADERS From the Boys Soccer Coaches Association, the regular season scoring leaders are as follows: 1. Scott Savage (Model) 48; 2. Mike Hughes (Holmes) 41; Michael Dugger (Madisonville-North Hopkins) 36 (nine assists). On the defensive side, Tates Creek s Marc Frank was tops among goalkeepers with a.18 goals-per-game-against average. STATE SOCCER SCHEDULE This is a reminder regarding the schedule for the semifinals and finals of the 2001 Boys & Girls State Soccer Tournaments scheduled for Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 3 at Rawlings Stadium in Georgetown. 4 LAWRENCE COUNTY S WEST ON THE LOOSE Lawrence County s Michael West got back in to action after missing last week s game with a sprained ankle. West ran 30 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-7 win over Greenup County. His efforts pushed his career rushing yards total over the 7,000 mark, just the fifth player in state history to accomplish the feat. Following are his current career stats. His 85 career total touchdowns ties him with Piekville s Brent Coleman ( ) for seventh; his 83 rushing touchdowns ties him with Caldwell County s Jerrold Fuqua ( ) for sixth; and his 520 career points rank 11 th. MOORE S GIBSON AMONG STATE LEADERS Moore s Monquantae Gibson continues to move up among the state s career rushing leaders. Following are Gibson s numbers to date and where he stacks up against the state s leaders. On the year, Gibson has run 198 times for 1,450 yards and 22 touchdowns rushing. He has two other touchdowns and five two-point conversions for 154 points. Rush Attempts 767 (11 th ); Yards Rushing 5,435 (15 th ); Points Scored 562 (7 th ); Total Touchdowns 88 (7 th ); Rushing Touchdowns 76 (10 th ) FOOTBALL NOTES FROM WEEK#9 (As provided by member schools) Aaron Johnson ran 16 times for 175 yards in helping Bowling Green to a 10-7 win over Allen Co.-Scottsville. The win gave the Purples their 500 th win in 80 seasons of high school football. Bardstown s Lance Blanford tallied 18 tackles (five unassisted and 13 assists) in helping the Tigers to a win over Moore. Joseph Blackmon had three receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, playing only four offensive plays. Bell County s Dudley Hilton picked up career win No. 240 with a 58-2 win over Knott Co. Central. The win guaranteed Hilton his 25 th consecutive winning season dating from 1977 at Breathitt County to the present. Boyle County s Jeff Duggins put up big numbers in helping the Rebels roll to a win over East Jessamine. Duggins completed 16 of 21 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns. Duggins favorite target was Jacob Tamme. Tamme had seven receptions for 240 yards and five touchdowns in the win. After starting the first seven games at quarterback, Cawood s Jesse Brock moved to receiver/running back and helped Cawood to a win. Brock ran 10 times for 96 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He also had three receptions for 82 yards and caught a two-point conversion. On defense, Brock recorded eight tackles. Elizabethtown s Ryan Cross completed all three of his pass attempts for 151 yards and three touchdowns (65, 4 and 81 yards) in a win over DeSales. Eric Moore ran 29 times for 236 yards and three touchdowns in helping Holy Cross (Louisville) to a win over Christian Academy-Louisville. Moore also had a 26-yard touchdown reception and picked off an interception in the contest. Brad Drake of Muhlenberg South ran 14 times for 201 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Fort Campbell. Drake also had returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score. Josh Winn added three touchdowns and 169 yards rushing on 15 attempts. The Suns tallied 467 yards on offense. Owensboro Catholic s Kyle McGraw completed 19 of 23 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Edmonson County. McGraw now holds school records for pass attempts (190), pass completions (117), passing yards (1,623), passing yards in a game (364). In the win over Edmonson County, Catholic racked up 531 yards on offense a new school mark for a game.

5 Paul Dunbar s Corey Dunn needs just 85 yards to set a new school single-season rushing record. To date, Dunn has run 158 times for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Warren Central rushed for a whopping 425 yards in a 49-6 win over Logan County. The Dragons had four different backs carry for 50-plus yards. Desmond Harris led the effort with 153 yards and four touchdowns. For the game, Warren Central had 491 yards on offense. UNDEFEATED TEAMS After nine weeks of action, 10 teams remain unbeaten heading into Week #10. Following are the state s remaining undefeated teams and their next scheduled contest.
