1 WESTERN WATER POLO ASSOCIATION MEN S WATER POLO Weekly Update #3 September 21, 2016 Contact: Mark Honbo (interim) mwhonbo@ucdavis.edu FPU ON THE MOVE AS WWPA SLATE WARMS UP DAVIS, Calif. A week after Santa Clara topped Fresno Pacific, 10-6, for the first WWPA contest of the season, the conference slate continues to heat up with the LMU-UC San Diego showdown. Meanwhile, three conference teams take on the country s best programs at the Mountain Pacific Invitational, formerly known as the NorCal Invitational. Half of the conference competed at the Aggie Roundup tournament, which featured command goalkeeping performances from Cal Baptist s Joseph Moorman (49 saves in three games) and UC Davis Spencer Creed (25 stops in Sunday s split with Cal and San Jose State). However, Fresno Pacific (3-2, 0-1) had the WWPA s lone upset of the week with its 11-8 thriller against No. 17 San Jose State, mostly thanks to the whopping 23 saves by senior netminder Dillon Robinson. The Clovis High alumnus, who held the Spartans to 0-for-7 shooting on power plays, also helped the Sunbirds eke out an victory over Redlands to earn Kap7/Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week honors. Incredibly, Robinson s 23 stops against SJSU is not his career high: he had 25 against Cal Baptist back in UP NEXT IN THE WWPA Wednesday, Sept. 21 Loyola Marymount at UC San Diego*, 6 p.m. Cal Baptist at UC Irvine, 7 p.m Friday, Sept. 23 Santa Clara vs. USC (Mountain Pacific Invitational), 1 p.m. Chapman at Concordia, 1:30 p.m. UC Davis vs. Long Beach State (Mountain Pacific Invitational), 2:25 p.m. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Cal Baptist, 3 p.m. Air Force vs. Pacific (Mountain Pacific Invitational), 3:50 p.m. Fresno Pacific at UC San Diego*, 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 Fresno Pacific at Loyola Marymount*, Noon UC Davis at Mountain Pacific Invitational Air Force at Mountain Pacific Invitational Santa Clara at Mountain Pacific Invitational Sunday, Sept. 25 UC Davis at Mountain Pacific Invitational Air Force at Mountain Pacific Invitational Santa Clara at Mountain Pacific Invitational
2 WWPA NOTES, cont. UC Davis (7-2, 0-0) went 3-1 at its own Roundup event, not counting an exhibition win over nearby JC American River. Oddly, the Aggies best overall performance arguably came in their lone loss of the weekend: a 13-7 setback against No. 3 California. Junior goalkeeper Spencer Creed tallied 12 stops against the Golden Bears, then virtually carried the Aggies to victory with his 13 saves in Sunday s nightcap win over SJSU. Cal Baptist (3-6, 0-0) had a tough slate at the Roundup, falling to No. 4 Pacific, No. 3 Cal, then dropping a overtime heartbreaker to San Jose State. Seniors Joseph Moorman (21 saves) and Brent Teraoka (6 goals) posted monster games in the loss to the Spartans. Santa Clara (4-4, 1-0) also faced a tough schedule at the Roundup, with Saturday losses to the two Top 5 powers in the field. The Broncos opened the weekend by logging the first WWPA win of the year, Thursday s 10-6 victory over Fresno Pacific. Dane Estrella and Mac Carey each had two goals and an assist against the Sunbirds. Loyola Marymount (2-6) served notice for the rest of the conference with two strong efforts at its own Conference Challenge Cup. The Lions battled No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 9 Pepperdine to late one-goal margin before ultimately falling by finals of 9-7 and Sophomore utility Eric Reitmeier totaled seven goals in the two games. Similarly, UC San Diego (4-4, 0-0) gave No. 6 UC Santa Barbara a scare in road non-conference action. The Tritons and Gauchos were locked in an 8-8 tie before UCSB escaped with a late run. Three UCSD players had two goals each with senior Nick Alexander assisting on six scores. The Tritons also delivered an 18-6 road win at Cal Lutheran on Thurday. Concordia (1-4) lost its fourth straight, this time falling to crosstown UC Irvine by a 13-3 final on Thursday. Spencer Hosch, John Roberts and Matthew Lange scored goals for the Eagles. RANKINGS: Five WWPA teams are in the Top 20 with two more (Air Force, LMU) receiving votes... UC Davis moved up half a place into a tie for 11th with Princeton... Santa Clara rose one spot to 19th, Cal Baptist moved into a tie for 16th with George Washington... UC San Diego slipped one spot to No The big mover and shaker was Fresno Pacific, which went from not receiving a single vote to grabbing the No. 20 slot WWPA STANDINGS Through September 11 WWPA OVERALL W-L Pct.
