Arkansas-Pine Bluff Southern Tennessee State Tuskegee Grambling State Virginia Union Hampton ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF - The Golden Lions (1-2, 1-0 SWAC West) pulled off the biggest upset of this week s games as they came from two touchdowns back in the last six minutes to force overtime, and then converted a two-point converstion in the third overtime to knock off BCSP No. 3 and two-time defending SWAC champion Alcorn State, UAPB redshirt sophomore quarterback Brandon Duncan threw for careerhighs of 505 yards (29 of 52) and four TDs without an interception. Two of the scores went to senior wideout Willie Young, who hauled in a 27-yarder to open the scoring and a 25-yarder to close out the scoring in the third OT. Duncan then completed a pass over the middle to John Hawkins that won it. Young finished with 13 catches for 232 yards and the two TDs. After ending regulation in a tie, the teams traded touchdowns and PATs in the first overtime and both were held without a score in the second OT. In the UAPB, SR, WR third OT, Alcorn scored first but could not covert on the mandatory 2-point attempt. Willie Young Alcorn got three rushing TDs from QB Noah Johnson (18 carries, 74 yds.) who also completed 30 of 41 passes for 355 yards and another three scores. The teams combined for 1,095 total yards. UAPB, R-SO, QB Brandon Duncan BCSP No. 8 Southern - Wide receiver/kick returner Willie Quinn scored on receptions of 72, 19 and 78 yards from quarterback Austin Howard and also returned a punt 73 yards to paydirt as the Jaguars (1-2, 1-0 SWAC West) got their first win in a big way over Alabama State, Howard finished with 304 passing yards ( ) and four TDs while running back Lenard Tillery ran for 124 yards on 22 carries. At 5-5, 150, Quinn finished with four receptions for 204 yards and 290 all-purpose yards. The Southern defense picked off three passes and picked up three fumbles in holding the Hornets to a single touchdown in the game s final minute. TENNESSEE STATE - The Blue Tigers (3-0, 0-0 OVC) back-up quarterback Ronald Butler came off the bench to throw two second-half touchdowns, the last of seven yards to Patrick Smith with just under four minutes left that proved to be the game winner in a win on the road against BCSP No. 4 Bethune-Cookman (0-2, 0-0 MEAC). The teams were tied at 17 at the half and TSU went up late in the third quarter on Butler s first TD pass of 6 yards to Chris Sanders-McCollum. B-CU came back to tie the score on Jamaruz Thompkin s 20-yard run early in the fourth quarter. TSU got the ball back in the fourth quarter on Terrel Bonds interception of a Anthony Cruz pass that set them up at the B-CU 38. Nine plays later, Butler hit TSU, SR, QB Ronald Butler Smith with the game-winner. On B-CU s next possession, Bonds picked off B-CU QB Arkevious Williams. TSU RB Earl Harrison ran for 113 yards and scored on a 46-yard TD run. TSU WR Steven Newbold had 3 rec. for 104 yards including a 71-yarder from QB starter O Shay Ackerman -Carter. 2 TUSKEGEE - Quarterback Kevin Lacey hit wideout Desmond Reece on a 23-yard TD strike with less than three minutes left to give the BCSP No. 9 Golden Tigers (3-0, 2-0 SIAC W) a win over Florida A&M in the 5th Quarter Classic in Mobile, AL. The clinching score was set up by Ladarell Pettway s 24-yard return of a punt to the FAMU 33. Lacey hit Reece on the second play after the punt. After trailing 13-7 at the half, Florida A&M (0-3, 0-0 MEAC) had taken a third-quarter lead following a 43-yard field goal by Austin Miller and QB Kenneth Coleman s 5-yard pass to Brandon Norwood after the Rattlers recoverd a fumble deep in TU territory. Tuskegee scored its first-half points on two Delton Hall field goals (32, 31) and a 19-yard TD scamper by Jayjerian Craig. Coleman also hit Norwood on a 28-yard scoring pass in the second quarter for FAMU s initial points. TUSKEGEE, WR Desmond Reece BCSP No. 2 GRAMBLING STATE - The BCSP No. 2 G-Men (1-1, 1-0 CIAA N) got a 51-yard TD pass from QB Devante Kincade to wideout Chad Williams to open the scoring and scored on two first-half turnovers in downing Jackson State GSU added a 62-yard interception return in the first quarter by Joseph Williams and a 51-yard third -quarter fumble return by Donovan McCray to build a 28-0 lead. VIRGINIA UNION - The Panthers got 119 rushing yards and TD jaunts of 30, 6 and 4 yards from running back William Stanback to run past Winston-Salem State Saturday night in Winston-Salem. VUU (1-2, 0-0 CIAA N) also got 10 receptions for 143 receiving yards and two TDs (56, 5) from quarterback Shawheem Dowdy ( ,, 212 yards) to wideout Jusse York (10 rec., 143 yds.). WSSU (1-2, 0-0 CIAA S) amassed 375 yards of offense but only scored on two Rod Tinsley to Canard Brown passes of 8 and 5 yards. HAMPTON - The Pirates (1-2, 1-0 MEAC) led just 7-0 at the break but scored 24 unanswered third-quarter points to pull away to a 34-7 win over Howard (0-3, 0-0 MEAC). William Stanback VVU RB takes flight BIG LOSERS! SC State NC A&T St. Augustine s BCSP No. 7 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE - S. C. State head coach Buddy Pough requested and was granted cutting the second half by six minutes as his Bulldogs were manhandled by AP No. 2 Clemson Pough reportedly made the request at halftime with his team trailing The third and fourth quarters were reduced to 12 minutes instead of 15 minutes. BCSP No. 1 NORTH CAROLINA A&T - FBS Tulsa made sure that would be no repeat of the Aggies upset of FBS Kent State as they jumped up 48-0 at the half and led 58-0 before settling for a win. A&T hung in early, trailing only 10-0 before QB Oluwafemi Bamiro threw an ill-advised pass while being hit that was returned 65 yards for a score. Bamiro threw another pick on the Aggies next possession which the Hurricanes turned into a 51-yard scoring pass. Tulsa later blocked two Steve Sawicki punts. ST. AUGUSTINE S - The Falcons (0-3, 0-0 CIAA S) gave up 60+ points to its second MEAC team in falling to North Carolina Central WORTH NOTING COHEN HELD OUT - Dynamic North Carolina A&T RB Tarik Cohen went out in the first quarter of the Aggies game in Tulsa and did not return with a shoulder injury. The Aggies are off next week and return to action on Thursday, Sept. 29 vs. Hampton DELAYED START - The start of North Carolina A&T s big four-overtime upset of Kent State was delayed two hours Players, Stats Worth Watching because of dangerous weather in that area of Ohio. The delay caused the game to be played past midnite. The game was also the first FBS game in history with a female, Amana Sauers (r.) as the head referee. A&T linebacker Jeremy Taylor, a former walk-on, was named the STATS FCS National Player of the Year for his huge efforts in the game (See BIG WINNERS)!
