Wednesday, March 1, 2017 Ask Before You Act! 32 OTHER BUSINESS & QUESTIONS? NCAA BYLAW EXEMPLARY CONDUCT Individuals employed by or associated with member institutions for the administration, the conduct or the coaching of intercollegiate athletics are, in the final analysis, teachers of young people. Their responsibility is an affirmative one, and they must do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable acts. Their own moral values must be so certain and positive that those younger and more pliable will be influenced by a fine example. Much more is expected of them than of the less critically placed citizen.

(In some cases they will need an updated Form I-20) F-1 visa students cannot enter the US more than 30 days before the program start date on their I-20. Students cannot stay in US more for than 60 days after the Program End Date on their I-20 (unless they have applied for a work permit)

Financials The estimated cost of attendance for international student athletes is $34,698 for one year of study (2 semesters) If the international student athlete s grant-in-aid does not fully cover that amount, they will need to provide proof of funds to cover the remaining balance (i.e. bank statement or bank letter from student or sponsor). If the remaining amount will be covered by a family member or other sponsor, an affidavit form will also need to be submitted with the financial documents.

Enrollment F-1 visa students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours for undergraduates/9 hours for Graduates) International UG students must be enrolled in at least 9 on campus hours. Internationals can enroll in online courses, but they must have registered for the 9 on campus hours first. ISSS must terminate a student s SEVIS record/i-20 if they fail to attend class, which will invalidate their I-20 If a student withdraws from their program and will not transfer to another school, they must leave the US within 15 days

International Travel International Students should stop by the ISSS office before traveling outside the U.S. during vacation periods. We check the student s SEVIS record, sign their I-20 and check the validity of their visa and passport. We also provide travel letters to show CBP in case they are stopped for secondary inspection. *An international student can continue to stay legally in the U.S. if their F-1 visa has expired as long as their I-20 is valid and they re maintaining status. However, the expired visa will need to be renewed at a US embassy or consulate if the student wishes to leave and re-enter.*

Insurance Most International Students enroll in the UAB Student Viva Plan The Student Health and Wellness Center will accept comparable outside plans with a completed waiver and outline of benefits (in English).

Employment F-1 VISA STUDENTS CAN WORK ON THE UAB CAMPUS BUT CANNOT WORK OFF-CAMPUS WITHOUT PERMISSION. Cannot work more than 20 hours per week on-campus during the semester Work no more than 37.5 hours per week on-campus during breaks and annual vacation (talk to ISSS) Full-time work in the US is 40 hours per week, but for UAB payroll/hr reasons, 37.5 is full-time here Valid employment = jobs with entities that provide direct services to UAB students Student should talk to ISSS before accepting a position. (We can also assist with SSN if needed.) International Students are eligible to obtain a work permit and work in a job related to their major under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. Often, students wait until after graduation.

Tax Returns All international athletes who receive grant-in-aid above the cost of tuition must file a tax return. The student athlete will need to apply for an ITIN number or if they have worked on campus, they will have an SSN. They should also receive a 1042S from UAB. Students should see Aston Manotai (kmanotai@uab.edu) or Daizy Walia (dwalia@uab.edu) if they need to apply for an ITIN or have questions. We have scheduled tax return sessions to help internationals file their 1040NR-EZ IRS form.
