1 The Order of St. Pat TCM Day Celebration The Engineering Student Leadership Council considers activities of The Order of St. Pat, also known as TCM Day, an opportunity for students in the College of Engineering to learn about its heritage and to share in the camaraderie that exists amongst UTEP engineers. Each year Engineers across the country celebrate the day of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Engineering. UTEP Engineers also celebrate TCM Day, which is one of the oldest traditions and can be traced back to We commemorate the old rivalry thru activities such as singing the Engineer s and Mickey Mouse songs, witnessing the Coming of St. Pat and kissing the Blarney Stone. Students have the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, engineering alumni and their peers to create a bond that follows them well after completing their studies.

3 The Order of St. Pat Event Descriptions Greening of the College of Engineering - ESLC Chairs post green flyers to publicize the event to participants. Shamrocks are posted on the doors of faculty and staff to encourage those who haven t participated and to identify those who have. When: Starting Monday, March 2 and running until the day of the big event. Where: All over the Engineering, Metallurgy, Classroom and Annex Buildings. Remembering the Past - Sale of Engineer s Song Book at the Plaza Main Office. A recreation of what was imagined to have happened in ~1938 as a fundraiser for needy Engineering students. Other media (e.g. UTEP Today screens will also display slides of the University and its roots in Engineering). When: Booklets go on sale Friday, March 5. Where: The Plaza Main Office, CRBL 001 (Lower Level) Hall Decorating Contest - The Hall Decorating Contest, as with the other events, is to promote the spirit of TCM and get green up the college for the big day. When: Judging to be held Monday, March 8 at 3:00 PM. Where: Hallway adjacent to Departmental Office(s) Green Eggs and Ham Food Cart - This activity will stir up the excitement for the upcoming Order of St. Pat. Student employees from the Plaza will randomly travel around the College of Engineering targeting study and congregation areas to promote the big day. When: Monday-Thursday, March 8-11; 12;30 1:30 PM. Where: College of Engineering Org Row; 2 nd Floor Junction of Metallurgy and Engineering Hallways Re-painting the lines Guards will re-paint the lines that used to separate engineering from the rest of the University. These lines are done to remember when Texas College of Mines changed its name to Texas Western and the dean of Engineering said: You can call yourselves whatever you want but on this side, we will always be TCM. When: Thursday March 11 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm Where: Engineering (Hawthorne St) and Computer Science Bldg.

4 TCM DAY, 12 MARCH 2010 Sign-in Participants will sign-in (record for TCM & waiver form). During Sign-in, participants are asked to contribute 3 canned goods for the Rescue Mission of El Paso (site of Engineering courses during the 1970s), $2.00 to help offset the cost of the event and one 1 white t-shirt. Participants will have a chance to show their spirit by painting their faces, t-shirts, etc. They will also receive copies of the songs to be sung for the day, a hard hat and safety goggles to look like engineers. Learning of songs Participants will learn the songs that will be sung during the march around campus. TCM is much more than a celebration; it has tradition and culture in its roots. In order to show those roots, the partakers sing Engineering songs throughout the campus. The songs symbolize the spirit within the Engineering population. This mini parade visits various campus areas (including: LART, Union building, CS, and GEOL buildings) to make UTEP community aware of TCM and remind them of the origins of the celebration. Blasting of TCM / Raise the flag The blasting of TCM will occur at 9:00am. This will be the signal that TCM has officially started. This is a recreation of what happened in the early years of TCM (30 s, 40 s, 50 s and 60 s) when the day started by exploding dynamite. The moments before the explosion will be filled with an air raid siren and then a dry ice canon will be used to simulate the blast. The President s office will proclaim 12 March 2010 as TCM Day. The TCM flag is raised on the flagpole to honor the foundation and history of the university. The Coming of St. Pat - The spotlight shines on St. Pat at this theatrical introduction of the patron saint of Engineering. As TCM is a celebration to remember the foundation of UTEP as a Mining College, the presentation of St. Pat will take place in one of the darkest places of the Metallurgy building: the Foundry. Every year St. Pat chooses the theme in which he/she makes his/her grand entrance. Where: Foundry, Metallurgy Building 1 st floor Gift to Dean of Liberal Arts Dr. Daudistel This visit to the Dean of Liberal Arts reminds all involved of the Mickey Mouse courses (compared to Engineering courses) introduced by the merger with El Paso Junior College. Tradition dictates that St. Pat present the Dean with a gift. Where: University Ave. steps / entrance to the College of Liberal Arts Whitewash the M - One of TCM s longest living tradition is the whitewashing of the "M." The students and guards will create an assembly line around the perimeter of the "M". Buckets will be filled, then passed up to demonstrate and foster teamwork. Where: Sun Bowl Drive, adjacent to Baltimore (football practice) field Spell TCM on the Sun Bowl /Break / Snack - One of the most fun traditions in TCM is the Spelling of TCM in the Sun Bowl. The spelling of TCM is a great activity that is used to show the spirit of engineering students for their history, and their university. A break will be given to participants that includes a snack and Gatorade. Where: Sun Bowl, on the field

5 Visit to Computer Science Building / Cleaning lines This visit to the youngest child of the College of Engineering has always been welcomed by cookies and milk and sometimes prizes for the participants and Guard. In gratitude for the hospitality, participants clean the TCM lines outside the building. Where: Computer Science Building Salute the Engineer Statue - This visit to the oldest child, Geology (or Mining), of the University has all participants saluting the Engineer statue in the lobby of the Geology Building. Geology faculty are encouraged to participate. Where: Geology Building, 1 st floor St. Pat Olympics - The competition brings out the fight in all to show who is superior in a variety of mind and physical activities/games. The TCM Olympics will have an Ore extraction theme and all the side events will deal with the ore extraction theme or mining. This will allow students to construct a water rocket to launch at the end of the Olympics. There will be other events that will allow for an upgrade in the rockets. Each student from the group will have to participate in an event in order to gain the parts for rocket. These events are: o Mine Obstacle (Makeshift tunnel of PVC) o Pick throwing (Throw a pick to land in designated area) o Panning for Gold (Kids swimming pool filled with colored water and will search for gold) o Ore Cart relay (Pile of rocks in wagons and move from one position to another) Where: Geology Lawn / Geology Lawn Blarney Stone and Green Cards The oldest of tradition for the Order of St. Pat. Students will be asked to pay homage to St. Pat by kissing the Blarney Stone and Green Cards (participation certificates) will be handed out to all participants. Records will also be kept to report on the official TCM website of those who have participated this year and in years past. Where: Arroyo behind Classroom Bldg TCM Picnic and Awards - To reward participants for their dedication and enthusiasm during the celebration and to get them fed! The Awards are to acknowledge those participants who demonstrated dedication, spirit, and enthusiasm during the celebration alumni are encouraged to participate and share past TCM experiences. Where: Classroom Building Lower Level Patio
