1 November 23, 2014 Solemnity of Christ the King November 30, st Sunday of Advent Parish Bulletin Issue 41 Volume XLVI ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) Fax (225) Website: SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me. Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me. And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. Matthew 25: ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Jesus said to his disciples: Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: Watch! Mark 13:33-37 ADVENT LITTLE BLUE BOOKS Again this year, the Parish will have Advent and Christmas reflections available to be picked up in the church after Masses on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23. Please pick up a copy from the baskets that will be placed at the doors of the church. (One copy per family please). 2 ETCETERA... Dear Sisters and Brothers, Although I did not win the $10,000 raffle, I still think the Fair Fiesta was a success! God truly blessed us by keeping away the rain until later on Sunday afternoon. The polar vortex made it really cold on Friday and Saturday, but it seemed to only energize the children who did not know what cold meant. Things went smoothly, for the most part, and I believe everyone had a good time. I know I disappointed a number of children who asked if I would go on some of the rides with them. My only excuse was that I did not have a bracelet, which I promised to purchase next year. The fair happened because of the hard work of hundreds of volunteers to whom I am grateful, especially Carolina and Bryan Jones, chairs of the fair committee. Jesse and Patrick Downs also spent many hours working with the fair and have graciously agreed to serve as chairs for the 2015 fair. I need to mention also Bill Quirk and his crew for doing an incredible job to make sure all went well. And, of course, I thank all of you for coming to the fair and making it such a success. During the fair, we had copies of the master plan throughout the campus. I hope you had the opportunity to look at it. This should give you the general idea what is being planned and where things will be. What will happen next is the installment of a t-building, to provide eight temporary offices for the church office staff whose current offices are on the south side of the administration building. Their offices will be transformed into two classrooms for the child care center. Once all of this is in place, the former rectory will be demolished so that work can begin. Work will begin in full force in late May, as soon as school is out. The construction of the new child care center will take about one year to complete, after which the construction of the new administration building will begin. Please note that, like last year, the Thanksgiving Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, 26 November, at 6:00 pm. You are encouraged to bring bread and wine to this Mass, where they will be blessed for your Thanksgiving dinner. This is the time when we especially express our gratitude for the abundant blessings in our lives. One of my greatest blessings is to be part of St. Aloysius Church, to find a family that loves, supports, and prays for me as I battle cancer. My heart is filled with gratitude for all of you for all you have done for me. In this spirit of thanksgiving, I am grateful for and want to update you on my health condition. I recently had a CT scan, which showed some shrinkage of the tumor. At this time, I am taking a break from the chemotherapy treatments while the doctor continues to monitor my condition. I do feel good, have more energy, and my appetite is good. The church year is coming to an end with the feast of Christ the King this Sunday. Then we begin another year with the season of Advent. Please pick up a reflection book as an aid to prayer during Advent. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and a new liturgical year! Love, PARISH STAFF Parish Office: Fr. Than N. 4 STEWARDSHIP OF PRAYER FAITH: A GIFT TO BE SHARED! Pope Francis speaks on prayer Excerpt from a homily in May 2014 ST. ALOYSIUS SENIOR MINISTRY Advent Morning of Reflection We welcome our guest facilitator, Rev. Paul Yi, Pastor of Ascension of Our Lord Parish Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Our Morning Reflection: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) Thursday, December 11 9:00 a.m. in the Parish Office Chapel. Pope Francis explained that we need to open three doors in order to know Jesus. The first door is praying to Jesus. You must realize that studying without prayers is no use. We must pray to Jesus to get to know him better. The great theologians did their theology while kneeling. Pray to Jesus! By studying and praying we get a bit closer But we ll never know Jesus without praying. Never! Never! The second door is celebrating Jesus. Prayer on its own is not enough, we need the joy of celebration. We must celebrate Jesus through his Sacraments, because these give us life, they give us strength, they nourish us, they comfort us, they forge an alliance with us, they give us a mission. Without celebrating the Sacraments, we ll never get to know Jesus. This is what the Church is all about: celebration. The third door is imitating Jesus. Take the Gospel, what did he do, how was his life, what did he tell us, what did he teach us and try to imitate him. Entering via these three doors, means entering into the mystery of Jesus and it s only in this way that we can get to know him and we mustn t be afraid to do this. During the day, today, we can think about how the door leading to prayer is proceeding in our life: but prayer from the heart is not like that of a parrot! How is prayer of the heart? How is the Christian celebration in my life proceeding? And how is the imitation of Jesus in my life proceeding? How must I imitate him? Do you really not remember! The reason is because the Book of the Gospel is full of dust as it s never opened! Take the Book of the Gospel, open it and you will discover how to imitate Jesus! Let s think about how these three doors are positioned in our life and this will be of benefit to everybody. 6 THE FEAST OF ST. CECILIA NOVEMBER 22 If you play a musical instrument, you may already know about St. Cecilia, who is the patroness of musicians. It s been said that she played musical instruments and sang only to God in her heart on her wedding day. It is believed that Cecilia lived in third-century Rome. She was a Christian who was given in marriage to a pagan named Valerian. When she explained to her husband about her determination to remain pure for God, he was so inspired by her faith that he and his brother, Tiburtius, converted to Christianity and were later martyred. Cecilia was also killed for the faith during years of anti-christian persecution. Her home, in which she was killed, is still intact beneath the Basilica of St. Cecilia in the Trastevere section of Rome. In art, St. Cecilia is often shown playing the organ, harp or other instrument. Many famous composers, such as Handel, wrote music for her feast day. Today we ask St. Cecilia to inspire for all musicians to sing and play for greater glory of God. (Listen to Handel s music on Youtube: IPMqWnTBKlA) ATTENTION ALL SUNDAY MASS READERS Please pick up your copy of the 2015 Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers in the Work Sacristy.
