Introduction to Careers Service Role in Year 12 Options after GCSE Labour Market Information
Careers Service NI Part of the Department for the Economy Offices throughout NI within Jobs and Benefits offices, Job Centres and stand alone Professionally qualified to provide impartial Careers Information, Advice and Guidance All age, all ability service Work in partnership with schools, colleges and training providers
To develop and deliver an effective, impartial and professional careers service to help people realise their career aspirations, enabling them to contribute positively to their community and to the NI economy. A statutory duty to deliver careers guidance was placed on the Department through the Employment Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 The guidance must - (a) be provided in an impartial manner; and (b) be in the best interests of the person receiving it.
Role of the Careers Adviser Careers advisers enable people to make well prepared and realistic choices about their education, training and employment options Ascertain the client s career aspirations, interests, motivations, skills and ability Gauge the clients readiness for career decision making Outline the options for education/ training/ employment Assist the client in action planning
Post 16 Options. All of the following options will be discussed with each individual based on their personal aspirations 1. A Levels 2. Further Education courses 3. Apprenticeships and Training
Labour Market Information The use of LMI is important in the career planning process. Alongside exploring personal skills and interests it is necessary to be aware of the opportunities for employment both locally, regionally, nationally and globally. Careers Advisers are trained in the delivery of LMI and continually update their knowledge through engagement with employers and industry visits.
Skills Barometer/LMI DfE and UU Centre for Economic Research have developed a Skills Barometer which provides a clear indication of where the skills gaps/shortages are currently, where they are emerging, and where they are likely to emerge over the longer term in the NI economy. The barometer provides information on the current and future labour market opportunities, as well as employment prospects by level and by course. ni.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/economy/ni-skills- Barometer-2017-Summary-Report.pdf PAGES 14 & 15
