2 Careers Leadership in Schools Spring Term 2018 COA is pleased to be offering its well-respected programme of professional development for careers leaders, led by David Andrews OBE, again in We have remodelled our certificate course to link more explicitly to the Gatsby Benchmarks of good practice. Recognising the pressures on schools around releasing staff to participate in courses, we have also reduced the programme to four days, to make it accessible to a greater number of careers leaders. The Careers Leaders Certificate has been designed principally for recently-appointed careers leaders. However, experience has shown that participants benefit from having a year s experience in the role before starting the course. 7 About COA For over 30 years Cambridge Occupational Analysts has worked with more than 3,000 schools in the UK and across the globe in 50 countries to deliver a fully comprehensive range of careers and higher education programmes including aptitude tests. The technical quality of the programmes is paramount and they are continually developed and checked throughout the year. Our advisers and interviewers are all professionally qualified, with many years of careers and higher education experience working in schools, the careers service or careers consultancies. They work with young people and offer infomation and advice on a one-to-one or group basis, assisting schools in meeting IAG objectives. For nine years, from 2003 to 2012, COA ran a Postgraduate Certificate of Professional Studies in Leading and Managing Careers Work in Schools in partnership with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. The course was led by David Andrews OBE, as an affiliated lecturer at the Faculty of Education. Although the Faculty is no longer offering any Professional Development courses, we are pleased to be continuing to work with David to offer a programme of professional development for careers leaders (or heads of careers) in schools. Really helped to inform me about the role, especially with a view to discussing with the senior management team how we might restructure CEIAG in school.
8 David Andrews OBE Course leader, David Andrews OBE, works as an independent education consultant, trainer, researcher, and writer specialising in careers education and guidance. He leads courses for careers leaders and careers advisers, provides consultancy to local authorities, schools and careers companies and has spoken at numerous conferences. David is a Fellow of the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICEC) and was an affiliated lecturer at the University of Cambridge s Faculty of Education. He is now a Visiting Fellow at the International Centre for Guidance Studies, University of Derby. He is currently working on a research project for The Careers & Enterprise Company, collecting case studies of careers leadership in schools. David is an honorary life member of, and policy advisor to, the Career Development Institute (CDI). In 2011 he authored Careers Education in Schools, a book which critically examines current policy, practice and possibilites for the future. Before moving into freelance work in 1998, he taught in secondary schools, worked as an advisory teacher in a careers service and also as an LEA adviser. In the past David has worked as an adviser to the DfE and an Ofsted Inspector. Cambridge Occupational Analysts Ltd w e info@coa.co.uk All content copyright 2017 Cambridge Occupational Analysts Ltd
