The Intentions of the Policy This policy provides us with a framework for meeting statutory requirements and for achieving our school aims of enhancing students prospects, encouraging them to contribute to their communities and preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of working life. 2. Aims of Careers Education and Guidance To prepare students for the opportunities responsibilities and experiences of adult life. To help them develop career awareness and enable them to manage personal career development. To enable them to manage transitions such as the change from school to college or work. To enable them to experience the world of work. To enable them to handle careers information and assist them in making informed choices. 3. The School s Commitment The school is committed to promoting high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance as an integral part of every student s education. It will seek to ensure that the provision is appropriate to the age, ability and educational needs of the individual and is underpinned by equality of opportunity. It is the policy of the school that all students will be given: - A planned and progressive programme of activities. - Access to high quality information using a variety of sources including the Careers Library, Computer Software and Information, Advice and Guidance Advisers - Access to individual guidance from Information, Advice and Guidance Advisers 4. Implementation of the Policy The responsibility for the management of careers education, information, advice and guidance lies with the Subject Leader for Citizenship, overseen by a member of the Leadership Group who is responsible to the Headteacher. 5. Provision of Careers Education Year 7 The Careers unit is delivered through Growing Minds, the focus of which is the development of lifelong and transferable skills. Within Growing Minds the students will develop an idea of the possible future routes they might take and have the opportunity to take part in Business and Enterprise activities and apply for job roles. Year 8 Careers is delivered as part of the Citizenship programme. One half term (6 weeks) is allocated specifically to Careers education. The learning is based on the Real Game, developing ideas based around life aspirations and the cost of living. Page 3 of 6

4 Year 9 Citizenship is again organised on a carousel with students experiencing three half termly modules one of these being Careers and delivered by interested staff. In Y9 the focus for learning and teaching is the identification and understanding of personal, transferable skills. Years 10 and 11 have one timetabled period a week of Citizenship and a half term unit of Careers is taught within this by interested staff in each year. The focus for KS4 is to support students in their choice of Post 16 education and through the application process. 6. Careers Education Programmes KS3 and KS4 The Careers Programme and lessons are set out below and reviewed against the learning outcomes on the National Framework for Careers Education and Guidance. 7. Year 7 Careers Year 7 have 1 Growing Minds Day (4 hours) 1. Investigating the role within school. 2. Identifying where students can become involved in wider school life 3. Applications for a student welfare position in school. 8. Year 8 Careers Y8 have 1 half term (6 hours) of careers education. 1. Jobs / careers and occupations 2. Personal aspirations and work / life balance 3. Using skills to develop a career 4. Managing money well 5. Using education 6. Putting it all together to achieve goals. 9. Year 9 Careers Year 9 students have approximately six lessons on Careers Education covering the following: 1. Personal skills 2. Transferable skills 3. Understanding job roles 4. Local Labour Market Information (LMI) 5. Comparing Oswestry to Manchester 6. Using skills. 10. Additional Careers Information Assembly Information on the Careers Library Assembly Talk by Shropshire Youth Drop-in Students can make appointments with Shropshire Youth/Connexions Page 4 of 6

5 Booklet All students will have a copy of relevant mass produced booklet that will be made available Visiting speakers for Post 16 providers 11. Year 10 Careers 5 hours of dedicated curriculum time: o Introducing work experience o Work experience applications workshop o Preparation for work experience (3 lessons) 12. Year 11 Careers Within the Year 11 PSD Programme students have approximately five lessons focussed on Careers Education covering the following areas: Review Post 16 Options and Action Plan Application procedures Application letters and forms Producing a CV Interview process and practice Employment trends and LMI Working Rights and Responsibilities 13. Partnership with the Shropshire Youth/Connexions Service The school will negotiate an annual agreement with the Shropshire Youth/Connexions service to provide information, advice and guidance for students and support the Careers programme. This will involve a variety of activities: - Interviewing individual students - Small group work - Visiting tutor groups - Attending Parent s Consultation Events in Years 9,10 and 11 - Attending the Post 16 Evening - Liaising with the Careers Co-ordinator - Liaising with Pastoral Leaders - Liaising with the Learning Development Centre - Provide materials on CEG - Advice on the CEG Programme - Information on job and training vacancies - Helping students obtain post 16 placements - Provide information on school leaver destinations - Involvement in extended work experience placements - Annual review of provision - Providing drop-in sessions Page 5 of 6

Resources Appropriate resources are allocated to this area of the school s work. - Careers and Work Experience Co-ordinator - A Leadership Group member to oversee Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance/Work Experience/Work Related Learning - A dedicated Careers/Shropshire Youth/Connexions Resource Centre - A dedicated area in the Learning Resource Centre for Careers Information - An annual budget allowance 15. Careers Information - The Careers Resource centre - The Careers Library - The Kudos programme will be available on the school network - Careers Noticeboard: this is sited near the Resource Centre - Information from local Colleges - Post 16 Evening - Information produced by Shropshire Youth/Connexions 16. Staff Development A member of the Leadership Group attends County Network meetings and courses. A member of the Leadership Group attends the School Liaison meetings with the local College and partner schools. 18. Links with Partners Links with other partners support the programme including: - Local Colleges - Shropshire Youth/Connexions - Training Agencies - Education Business Link (EBL) - Local Employers - Rotary Club 19. Evaluation The Careers Co-ordinator will monitor, review and evaluate the policy. Page 6 of 6
